2. Beaverbrook Art Gallery Turner Experience Weekend Feb 16-19

The Beaverbrook Art Gallery has planned a sublime and unforgettable weekend of activities February 16-19 to celebrate one of our most cherished masterpieces, Joseph Mallord William Turner’s Fountain of Indolence.

On Thursday, February 16 at 7pm, we invite you to discover the inspiration for Turner’s Masterpiece: the poem The Castle of Indolence by James Thomson, "a place in which the dwellers live amid luxurious delights, to the enervation of soul and body." UNB student and actor Michael Holmes-Lauder will perform a dramatic reading of the poem, accompanied by classical violin sounds. Refreshments will be served. This is a free event for the public.

On Friday, February 17 from 7-8pm the Gallery welcomes Dr. Anne Koval, Associate Professor of Art History at Mount Allison University, who will present a lecture titled All that glitters is not gold: J.M.W. Turner as Alchemist. This is a free event for the public.

Gold, Gods and Glitter Masquerade: Saturday evening (February 18 at 9pm) brings a sublimely decadent twist to the Gallery with the masked ball fundraiser that brings together costumes, DJ Mizz Maxine, the magic of Dragon-fly Photography Studio, glittery face painting, creatively dramatic UNB drama students and the exciting opportunity to share local artist Dana O’Regan’s passion for Turner.

Exclusive for this event, Dana is interpreting The Fountain of Indolence using his own palette and style. Dana states: “While I painted this series of paintings [that are based on my interpretation of J.W.M Turner's “The Fountain of Indolence”], I tried to capture the energy and movement that is in all of his paintings as honestly as I could with the skills that I have as an abstract painter.” Masquerade participants can purchase $5 raffle tickets during the evening for a chance to win one of Dana’s paintings.

Masquerade tickets are $30. This is a 19+ event. Tickets can be purchased in person at the Gallery or by phone at (506) 458-2028.

The Masquerade is produced in partnership with Boom! Nightclub, New Brunswick College of Craft and Design, Picaroons Traditional Ales, and Ginger Design.

4. Cinema Politica presents Secrets of the Tribe Feb 17

Please join us on Friday, February 17 at 7pm at Conserver House, 180 St. John St., Fredericton, for a screening of the 2010 documentary Secrets of the Tribe (98 min.) by award-winning Brazilian director Jose Padilha (of "Bus 174" fame).

The field of anthropology goes under the magnifying glass in this fiery investigation of the seminal research on Yanomamö Indians of the Amazon basin. In the sixties and seventies, a steady stream of anthropologists explored the Amazon Basin to observe this "virgin" society untouched by modern life. Thirty years later, the events surrounding this infiltration have become a scandalous tale of academic ethics and infighting. The origins of violence and war and the accuracy of data gathering are hotly debated among the scholarly clan. Soon these disputes take on Heart of Darkness overtones as they descend into shadowy allegations of sexual and medical violation.

Critics say that this film "provides a record that is almost the same as the entire history of contact and colonialism suffered by many Indigenous peoples of many lands over many centuries." This film is presented in Portuguese and English with subtitles.

Cinema Politica screenings are followed by discussion about the film for those who wish to stay. Screenings are free but donations are welcome to pay for Cinema Politica Membership. All are invited. Our complete Winter 2012 schedule is now available at www.cinemapolitica.org/fredericton or become a fan on Facebook!

9. Monday Night Film Series presents Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy Feb 19-20

Monday Night Film Series takes place at Tilley Hall, UNB Campus. | General Admission is $7 | Website and info: www.nbfilmcoop.com/fs.htm

Two Screenings: • Sunday, February 19, 7pm at Tilley Hall, UNB Campus • Monday, February 20, 8pm at Tilley Hall, UNB Campus

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy Director: Tomas Alfredson Cast: Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, Mark Strong, John Hurt, Ciarán Hinds Run Time: 127 minutes Country: United Kingdom Year: 2011 Language: English

Adapted from John le Carré’s classic Cold War spy novel of the same name, and starring a who’s who of British acting talent, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy is a fascinating look at the disenchanted world of espionage and treachery. Unglamorous but

5 certainly not unexciting, the film is the anti-James Bond where gadgets and girls are replaced with drab duds and anonymous office space, cool colours and muted emotions.

Having been dismissed from the Secret Intelligence Service, George Smiley (a superlative Gary Oldman, The Dark Knight, The Scarlet Letter) is brought back into the fold when former head of MI6, Control (John Hurt, Melancholia, Brighton Rock), asks him to smoke out a mole who’s leaking secrets to the Soviets. The suspects are all at the top level, collectively known as “The Circus”, and each of them is played by top-drawer British actors. Who is the guilty man? Take your pick from Toby Jones (My Week With Marilyn, Creation), Colin Firth (The King’s Speech, A Single Man), Ciaran Hinds (The Debt, There Will Be Blood), and David Dencik (the upcoming War Horse and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), who meet around a table every so often to exchange hard looks and nasty quips. The fifth suspect, of course, is Smiley himself.

Preserving the murky atmosphere of mistrust and cynical insecurity of the novel, director Tomas Alfredson (Let the Right One In) impressively recreates early 1970s London. The London shown here is a cold, damp-looking place, scrupulously shot by Alfredson in a restricted palette of subdued greys and browns. Aided by superb production design, a satisfyingly intelligent script, and a crack ensemble cast that also includes Mark Strong (The Guard, The Way Back) and younger actors such as Tom Hardy (Warrior, Inception) and Benedict Cumberbatch (War Horse, The Whistleblower), Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy is not only a stunningly good old-fashioned spy yarn, but a surefire classic.

11. The UNB Reading Series presents Anita Lahey and Gerard Beirne Book Launch Feb 21

Poets Anita Lahey and Gerard Beirne will be reading from, and celebrating, their most recent works Tuesday, February 21, 8pm at the Alumni Memorial Lounge.

Anita Lahey's second collection of poetry, Spinning Side Kick (Signal Editions), combines emotional honesty and worldly attitude in reflections on love, relationships, and the complications that ensue. Spinning Side Kick explores a range of subjects, from a one-man chimney demolition, and a lover at war in Afghanistan, to the fidelity of seahorses. Lahey's first book, Out to Dry in Cape Breton (Signal Editions), was nominated for the Trillium Book Award for Poetry and the Book Award. She has worked as the editor of Arc Poetry Magazine and as a journalist, writing for publications such as The Walrus, Maisonneuve, Canadian Geographic, Quill & Quire, among others.

Gerard Beirne is an Irish author who currently lives and teaches in Fredericton. Beirne's most recent book of poetry, Games of Chance - A Gambler's Manual (Oberon), links his education in mathematics and engineering to his creative endeavours in an effort to uncover a spiritual unity within the arts and sciences.

Games of Chance - A Gambler's Manual plays with the language of science and mathematical formulations to dissolve the expected boundaries of poetry and redefine our understanding of the world that surrounds us. Beirne is the author of both poetry and fiction, and his most recent novel, Turtle (Oberon), was long-listed for the 2010 ReLit Award. His novel, The Eskimo in the Net (Marion Boyars, London) was short-listed for the Kerry Group Irish Fiction Award in 2004 and selected by the Daily Express as Book of the Year. He is the past winner of two Sunday Tribune/Hennessey Literary Awards including New Irish Writer of the Year (1996). Beirne has been widely published and his short story Sightings of Bono was adapted for a film featuring Bono (U2).

The reading is presented by the UNB English Department, the Canada Council for the Arts, the UNB Fredericton Bookstore, and the Fiddlehead.

Admission is free and all are welcome to attend.

14. Salon Connex Art Talk explores Tokyo Hotel Story Feb 25

The Charlotte Street Arts Centre, a focal point for creation, presentation and education in the arts, is pleased to continue our partnership with Gallery Connexion, Fredericton’s only artist-run centre, to bring you the second SALON CONNEX, an opportunity to talk about what matters in art.

SALON CONNEX is the new salon series that takes place at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre, in the Auditorium. The salons are mediated and lively discussion forums, aimed at facilitating a learning curve in the community by providing a space and time to address what art might mean. Topics for discussion are always centred on Gallery Connexion’s world-class exhibitions and the content they present.

The current exhibition at Gallery Connexion, entitled Tokyo Hotel Story by Nathalie Daoust, subverts the role of women in Japanese society as portrayed in photographic images of dominatrices at the famous Alpha Inn.

The upcoming salon takes place on Saturday, February 25 at 6:30pm and will moderated by Erin Morton, PhD, professor of art history at UNB. Erin will help guide the discussion around Nathalie Daoust’s work and raise important questions for consideration. All are welcome to attend and admission is free. Picaroons beer tastings will be available.

As an extra treat, artistic evidence will be on display of the eleven performances held recently during the Hoot & Peep Mini Performance Festival at the Owl’s Nest Bookstore. The Hoot & Peep Mini Performance Festival, held February 6-11, 2012 featured live storefront window performances by eight Fredericton artists, all addressing the theme of ‘sexuality studies’ as a response to Daoust’s work.

SALON CONNEX is supported by the Province of New Brunswick’s Department of Wellness, Culture and Sport, as well as Picaroons Traditional Ales.

Are popular history books and museums legitimate sources of study? Do film/video documentaries that feature historical re- enactments open windows to the past? Or are they just pseudo-history, mere sources of entertainment? Bob Kroll will present both sides of the issue by examining his own career in writing popular history pieces about New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

The lecture will take place on Tuesday, February 28, 2012, 7pm in Brian Mulroney Hall, Room 101, St. Thomas University

20. Theatre New Brunswick Next Stage presents The Dollar Woman Feb 29 – Mar 4

The Dollar Woman The 35th Anniversary Production By & Walter Learning

From February 29 – March 4, the TNB Next Stage uncovers a dark secret of New Brunswick’s past in The Dollar Woman. It was only a little over a century ago that a community’s poor would be auctioned off to the lowest bidder. Alden Nowlan and Walter Learning’s gripping and controversial play transports us back to a small New Brunswick town and the showdown between a well-intentioned pauper overseer and a crusading newspaper editor at the final auction. What will become of a community divided? What will become of the last woman sold for a dollar?

“When The Dollar Woman premiered in January 1977, this controversial play packed houses, garnered praise and even inspired a denouncement from a church pulpit,” explains TNB Artistic Producer Caleb Marshall. “The past 35 years have not diminished the power of this story. Alden Nowlan and Walter Learning pulled no punches. It’s not as black and white a story as you may expect – it’s a complicated mesh of morality and motivations.”

St. Thomas University Director of Drama Ilkay Silk will direct this latest production of The Dollar Woman. “ I remember quite vividly the first production of The Dollar Woman. I was a TNB Young Company member and was so engaged in this remarkable story that took place in our province,” says Silk. “Fate- or what you will - has me directing the show 35 years later and I can't wait for this generation to see it with all our New Brunswick talent.”

The 35th Anniversary production brings together an all New Brunswick cast, the largest gathering of the province’s professional theatre talent on one stage including Walter Learning himself as crusading newspaper editor George Frances Train.

The Dollar Woman runs February 29 – March 3 at 7:30pm and March 4 at 2pm at The Black Box Theatre, St. Thomas. Tickets available at the Fredericton Playhouse box office http://www.theplayhouse.ca/box_office.aspx | or by phone at 458-8344 | 1-866-884-5800.

Adults $25 | McCain Student Tickets only $10

Call for Submissions

1. Nominations sought for 2012 Playhouse Honours

Fredericton Playhouse is asking the public for nominations for The Playhouse Honours 2012. Since 2008, The Fredericton Playhouse board of directors has awarded The Playhouse Honours annually. The recognition honours individuals’ involvement in the performing arts in Fredericton, fostering a deeper appreciation of the value that people can make to community life through their work in music, theatre, dance, spoken word, and multidisciplinary performing arts. A permanent display in the west gallery of the Playhouse recognizes the honourees.

“The arts contribute to our lives in ways that we may not even readily understand – they give us new perspectives, enhance our relationships, and help us to connect with our creativity,” says Kim Hill, president of The Fredericton Playhouse board of directors. “The Playhouse Honours is a way for our community to celebrate and say thank you to those who have made a significant contribution to Fredericton through their involvement in the performing arts.”

Nominations can be made by any person or organization. Underscoring the personal investment that they have made in the community, recipients must be individuals, not companies or organizations. Recipients may be a professional or amateur artist, administrator, volunteer, educator, philanthropist, advocate, organizer, etc. A selection committee (jury) comprised of members of the local arts community will review the submissions and recommend an honouree to the Fredericton Playhouse board of directors.

11 The deadline for nominations is Friday, February 24, 2012. Past recipients include Ilkay Silk (2008), Brent Staeben (2009), Philip Sexsmith (2010), and Walter Learning (2011).

Nominations may be sent to:
