12. Four Radio Plays by Alden Nowlan & Walter Learning Available for Your Listening Pleasure

During the 1970s, the writing partnership of Alden Nowlan and Walter Learning led to the creation of four original scripts. Of these, Frankenstein – The Man Who Became God, The Incredible Murder of Cardinal Tosca and The Dollar Woman were eventually produced for the stage by Theatre New Brunswick. A fourth play, Svengali, was never produced by TNB.

All four of these plays were adapted for radio and produced in Halifax and Toronto by CBC. These recordings, recently made available through the internet archive site Archive.org, offer a window into Theatre New Brunswick’s early history, the once busy world of CBC radio dramas and the important creative partnership that existed between Nowlan and Learning.

All four productions can be accessed at: http://www.tnb.nb.ca/listen-to-four-radio-plays-by-alden-nowlan-and-walter-learning/. Back to top.

Deadline: June 12, 2020 at midnight

The City of Fredericton invites proposals from professional artists to install a temporary public art piece at Phoenix Square, the public space in front of Fredericton City Hall. The art is intended to be in place from July to mid-fall 2020.

Proposals should respond to the province’s collective feelings of the circumstances created by COVID-19. The Plain Site Theatre Festival, curated by Alex Rioux and run by Theatre St. Thomas, in partnership with Solo Chicken Productions, is proud to return once again to the St. Thomas University campus to present new LGBTQIA2+-centered plays with the aim of fostering queer visibility in our arts scene and on our campus.

While the future of live performance is still unclear in our province, one thing is certain: the arts will always persist. Given the current state of the world, and inspired by the innovative virtual response from theatre and performance artists across the country, we feel it is more important than ever to run this festival and create spaces in our community for queer voices to connect and flourish.

Festival Director Alex Rioux is seeking submissions for the 2020 festival and is working hard to create a flexible festival plan that will work with whatever state of social distancing is required. Regardless of the situation, the festival is committed to maintaining our promise to support emerging queer voices on our campus. The deadline to submit is August 1, 2020.
