1. Theatre UNB presents While We’re Young by Don Hannah Feb 20- 23

Conflict and friendship transcend time and place in playwright Don Hannah's stirring exploration of the struggles of youth. Interweaving six stories about young people from Confederation to the 21st-Century, Hannah finds continuity in their transitions to adulthood as they experience life's endeavours through love's ecstasy, war's havoc, and family's allegiance. A young soldier goes to Afghanistan, another to Passchendaele. A family splits in two when a Protestant falls in love with a Catholic; one hundred and twenty years later, it could happen all over again for new reasons. Audiences will climb the limbs of a sprawling family tree, and along the way will encounter sad truths about endearment, revel in glimpses of joy, and indulge in tender connections through a family’s lineage.

Don Hannah is a former Writer-in-Residence for the University of New Brunswick. He received the 2012 Carol Bolt award for Drama from the Playwrights Guild of Canada for his one-person play The Cave Painter, which was the Main Stage production at Fredericton’s most recent NotaBle Acts festival last July.

While We’re Young is directed by Tania Breen and stars UNB’s third year drama class. The play will run nightly at 8pm from February 20-23 at Memorial Hall on the UNB campus. Tickets ($10 regular, $6 for students) are available at the door.

3. Fredericton artist Dana O’Regan brings abstract art installation to Florenceville-Bristol

Fredericton-based artist, Dana O’Regan, will be traveling up river to open his show Materialist Structures and Landscapes that Shape Us at the Andrew & Laura McCain Art Gallery. All are welcome to attend an opening reception on Thursday, February 21 from 7-9pm at the Gallery, located downstairs at 8 McCain St. in Florenceville-Bristol.

O’Regan explains that ever since he started painting his “use of material has reflected Man's physical connection to nature in industrial settings.” By viewing and experiencing O’Regan’s abstracted and textural paintings, it is evident that the artist is drawn to rough, rugged and tortured landscapes. He explains, “I have always carried this fascination with the earth throughout my life and brought this sensitivity into my artwork.”

Although his exhibit at ALMAG will highlight his paintings, O’Regan shares that as of late, he has “begun to go one step further by taking the canvas off the walls, to negotiate the space we inhabit with three-dimension structural paint-and-canvas assemblages in a new body of work…” Alongside his flatworks, Dana will be exhibiting his “column-like structures” comprised of bits and pieces of his old paintings, dried palette paint and other recycled materials. He wants “the viewer to be confronted by these hanging bodies of work that seem so alien yet familiar.”

The show will be on display from February 21 – March 30.

For more information about ALMAG, please visit www.mccainartgallery.com or ‘like’ the Gallery’s page on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/#!/McCainArtGallery

4. The Next Folding Theatre Company presents Greetings! From Gumdrop Mountain Feb 21-23

Greetings! From Gumdrop Mountain marks the first New Brunswick stage adaptation of a local artist’s work by the Next Folding Theatre Company. Greetings! From Gumdrop Mountain is based on the critically acclaimed collection of short stories of the 3 same name by nationally renowned Saint John author Jordan Stewart. A proudly maritime venture, The NFTC seeks to promote this New Brunswick writer’s work while complementing the rapidly growing theatre community of Fredericton.

Featuring a star-studded cast of 18 local actors, including Caleb Marshall, Len Falkenstein and Sam Kamras, Greetings! From Gumdrop Mountain balances juggernaut performances with technically astounding special effects and live locally composed music. A completely original New Brunswick work, the play signifies a major benchmark in the evolution of New Brunswick theatre.

When a train derails outside of the normally peaceful town of Gumdrop Mountain, the local inhabitants rally to rescue survivors of the crash. A boxcar containing hazardous materials explodes and kills many of the rescuers and passengers involved, and the town is forced to deal with the aftermath of the event. In the two years following the disaster, the tragedy and grief of the community manifests itself in strange and uncontrollable ways, forcing the Gumdrop Mountain Police Department to respond with brutally unorthodox tactics.

A play about trauma, fear and the strength of the human spirit, Greetings! From Gumdrop Mountain is a quirky, dark comedy with an eerily touching heart.

Greetings! From Gumdrop Mountain runs from February 21-23 @ 8pm each night at the BLACK BOX THEATRE, located in the Sir James Dunn Hall Building on St. Thomas University Campus, in Fredericton.

Tickets are $15 for general admission | $10 for Students/Seniors. Tickets are always available at the door.

The Fredericton Playhouse is asking the public for nominations for The Playhouse Honours 2013. Since 2008, The Fredericton Playhouse board of directors has awarded The Playhouse Honours annually. The recognition honours individuals’ involvement in the performing arts in Fredericton, fostering a deeper appreciation of the value that people can make to community life through their work in music, theatre, dance, spoken word, and multidisciplinary performing arts. A permanent display in the west gallery of the Playhouse recognizes the honourees.

“The Playhouse Honours initiative celebrates and thanks individuals from our community who have made a significant contribution to Fredericton through their involvement in the performing arts,” says Patrick Flanagan, president of The Fredericton Playhouse board of directors. “We do this through an accessible and thoughtful event which has in the past been a highlight of the year, not only for the recipient, but for the many community members whose lives have been touched and made more meaningful by the individual.”

Nominations can be made by any person or organization. Underscoring the personal investment that they have made in the community, recipients must be individuals, not companies or organizations. Recipients may be a professional or amateur artist, administrator, volunteer, educator, philanthropist, advocate, organizer, etc. A selection committee (jury) comprised of members of the local arts community will review the submissions and recommend an honouree to the Fredericton Playhouse board of directors.

8. Monday Night Film Series presents Hyde Park on Hudson Feb 25

February 25, 7:30pm at Tilley Hall, UNB Campus

HYDE PARK ON HUDSON Director: Roger Michell Cast: Bill Murray, Laura Linney, Olivia Williams Runtime: 95 minutes Country: United Kingdom Year: 2012 Language: English

5 A Gala Presentation at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival®, Roger Michell’s scurrilously entertaining Hyde Park on Hudson details the historic pre-war weekend in 1939 when England’s King George VI (last seen portrayed by Colin Firth in the Film Circuit favourite The King’s Speech) and Queen Consort Elizabeth came calling on U.S. president Franklin Delano Roosevelt at his upstate New York manor house — and when the president started to become especially close to his distant cousin Margaret “Daisy” Suckley.

The royal couple’s sojourn to Hyde Park on Hudson marks the first time that the British monarchy has ever made an official visit to the United States, and with war clouds on the horizon it is crucial that the soon-to-be allied nations fortify relations. Michell and screenwriter Richard Nelson playfully depict the recurring spasms of culture shock — hot dogs on the barbecue proving an especial source of horror for the royals — that serve to turn prying eyes away from the blossoming love between Daisy (Laura Linney, Kinsey, Love Actually) and FDR (Bill Murray, Moonrise Kingdom, Get Low). Meaningful silences, the proud display of a stamp collection, a tryst in a car — stolen moments accumulate as affinity becomes affection becomes an affair, while the chaos brewing on the European continent seems far, far away.

SALON CONNEX is an engaging salon series, established in 2011, that unites the educational and arts communities in Fredericton. The salons take place in the Charlotte Street Arts Centre Auditorium and are professionally mediated, lively discussion forums around the content of select Gallery Connexion exhibitions.

The current exhibition at Gallery Connexion, entitled Sanguine, Terre Brulee et Autres Angoises by Acadian artist, Maryse Arseneault, runs until March 8. In the exhibition, Arseneault addresses her own heritage and identity to raise questions about friendships, alliances, and animosities that have existed historically – and might continue to exist – between Acadians and the First Nations people of New Brunswick.

The upcoming salon takes place on Thursday, February 28, from 7:30-9pm and will be moderated by Jane Guerts, head of Design at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design. Jane holds a Master’s degree and a Bachelor degree in Education from UNB, a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toronto and a Diploma in Design from Sheridan Institute. She has acted as advisor and juror for many design competitions and has given workshops and lectures on art, design and creativity for Colleges and Universities throughout North America, in India and France. 1. Call For Submissions: 2013 PARC Playwrights’ Colony

Deadline: Thursday, February 28, 2013

Playwrights Atlantic Resource Centre (PARC) will be hosting the 2013 PARC Playwrights’ Colony between May 5-18, 2013 in Sackville, New Brunswick on the Mount Allison University campus. The annual Playwrights’ Colony, PARC’s flagship program, is a two-week long playwrights’ retreat. Working with a team of professional dramaturges and actors, eight to ten playwrights from across the Atlantic region have an opportunity to develop a new script. The Colony provides the most intensive writing opportunity for playwrights in this region. It provides playwrights with the time to write, reflect and revisit their work in a supportive and nurturing environment, along with these benefits:

Time away from life’s demands to write. The assistance of a professional dramaturge. Interaction and dialogue with other playwrights. Housing and travel.

The Colony is open to all playwrights in Atlantic Canada and offers a two-week residency, with the opportunity to work with a dramaturge and the opportunity to draw on the expertise, skills and talents of a professional company of experienced workshop actors during the second week (May 12-18) as well as the opportunity to take part in public readings of excerpts of their new work (May 15).

Playwrights may submit an application for the Colony with either a completed draft of a script or with a partially completed work in progress.

In order to make a submission to PARC to take part in the Colony, the following guidelines apply:

The submission must include: 8 • A $25 submission fee to be sent by mail to the PARC Script Library, Crabtree Bldg B 10 & 11, Mount Allison University, 49A York Street, Sackville, NB E4L 1C7) or paid on-line through PayPal on the PARC website (www.playwrightsatlantic.ca).

• A cover letter indicating what the playwright hopes to accomplish at the Colony and any other information about the script in terms of previous development, any upcoming plans for production, previous productions, stage of development, etc.

Stage Two will involve a review of proposals and selection of artist.

3. Call for Artists: Avondale Art Fair

Avondale Sky Winery vineyard grounds in Avondale, NS June 15, 2013, 10am to 5pm Entry Fee: $150

Application Deadline: March 15, 2013 Download application here: http://www.avondaleartfair.com/AAF_Artist_Application2013.pdf

Last year’s fair was wonderful and this year’s is expected to grow both in size and draw. Art Fair Productions is creating opportunities for artists to more effectively meet their market and realize their sales expectations. Please consider joining us in our second annual event in Avondale, NS. We have moved our fair from the Newport Landing waterfront to the beautiful vineyard grounds at the neighbouring Avondale Sky Winery. This location will better accommodate the anticipated growth, in both participants and attendees.

Some of the reasons you may want to consider this event: • Many participants considered last year’s event to be their single largest sales day of the year; • Several artists were presented with an award of merit (ribbon, cash award, and sale of a piece of their art), an activity we intend to expand this year; • Artists attending will receive priority acceptance in (and a discount in their fees for) our other two planned events in 2013; • Live music, good fair food and demonstration artists will be also be showcased; • This art fair has already become known for its ability to draw significant numbers of buyers in a well organized and marketed event. • The winery will again be hosting the artist meet-and-greet on Friday evening and a post-fair opportunity for artists to relax prior to leaving the site.

9 This year we are offering additional services to our artist base. While most artists have some Internet presence, not all have a site that spotlights their work. For these artists, or for artists who are unhappy with their present site, we offer a basic website creation package. Further, with the growing number of successful events that we are managing, we suspect that there are artists who will need to purchase their own tent in order to avoid unnecessary rental fees. We had great success with the tents we provided to many last year and will now make those tents available either by rental or purchase. You can view these new offerings under our Services tab.

Full information can be found here: www.avondaleartfair.com.
