Mitigation Policy 20. IWA considers that HS2 should review and change its whole approach to noise mitigation to recognise all waterway users as receptors requiring noise protection equivalent to permanent residential receptors. Wherever a navigable canal or waterway, or one currently undergoing restoration, is crossed by HS2 or affected by its close approach, noise mitigation measures should be provided to residential standard in recognition of the mooring rights on the canal of boats in residential use. 21. In particular, in Phase 2A the following design changes should be made: Fradley Junction (In CA1 Fradley to Colton) 22. Noise barriers across the Phase 1 Manchester spur bridge over the Trent & Mersey Canal at Fradley should be raised and extended onto the adjacent embankments to provide more effective acoustic screening for the canal boat moorings, navigation and towpath users, as well as nearby residential properties and the Conservation Area. 23. The height of the route across the Trent and Bourne Brook valley, including the Kings Bromley viaduct, Bourne embankment and River Trent viaduct, should be reduced to the minimum necessary for the road and river crossings to limit noise propagation over a wide area which includes the canal, and to reduce visual impact and construction costs. (Agreed with Staffordshire County Council) Great Haywood (In CA2 Colwich to Yarlet) 24. The noise fencing across Great Haywood viaduct should be further raised to the maximum possible to provide better noise protection for the residentially used moorings, manager’s flat, and the other marina, canal and towpath users, and to limit damage to the marina and associated businesses. 25. The height of the viaduct alongside Great Haywood Marina should be reduced to the minimum necessary to bridge the existing railway line to help limit noise and visual impacts. 26. An adequate temporary noise fence barrier should be provided along the boundary of the Trent South Embankment Main Compound with the existing railway to reduce noise impacts on the canal and boat moorings around Hoo Mill. Again this year I can report that with the continuing close working relationship between the Trust and the Neath Canal Navigation Co. much has been achieved in continuing the progress ofrestoration ofthe Neath Canal. Current Activity. Following a meeting ofthe stakeholders seeking the Restoration ofAberdulais Aqueduct, of which the Trust is a member, a brief was developed by Opus International Consultants (UK) Ltd, for the Assessment of the Feasibility of Rehabilitation of Aberdulais Aqueduct. Funding to carry out lhe study is being sought by the Tennant Canal Co. along with CADW, and funding for the study should be in place during 2008 -2009. Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council along with the City and County of Swansea and the Welsh Assembly have appointed Hyder and Bridge Economics to undertake a socio economic benefit analysis of restoring the eath and Tennant Canals to navigation. A draft report has already been submitted to the Local Authorities and Welsh Assembly and agreed in principle, the final report is now awaited. Groundwork Trust has secured funding to design and install features promoting the canal corridor between Tonna and Aberdulais. The N&TC Trust was approached to help with the content of scenes depicting local history to be carved on slate panels for inclusion into a new wall being built overlooking the canal at St Annes Terrace, Tonna. The new wall is the initial projectto improve and promote the canal in the Aberdulais area.

    NRA Anglii j i t - u THE OUSE WASHES “The Ouse Washes offer a rich variety of experiences both as an internationally important wildlife site and its continuing role of protecting the fens from flooding. ” O wildlife RSPB NRA National Rivers Authority Anglian Region THE ANGLIAN REGION The Anglian Region hosts a rich variety of wildlife habitats, flora and landscapes associated with its streams, rivers, ponds, lakes, wetlands, estuaries and coastal waters. Many of these are protected by statutory designations, for example, 75% of the coastline is covered by a conservation and/or landscape designation. Five Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty fall either partially or wholly within Anglian Region, along with England's newest National Park - the Broads. A fifth of England and Wales internationally important wetlands, from large estuaries such as the Humber and the Wash, to Ouse Washes in flood washlands such as the Ouse Washes, occur within this region. THE OUSE WASHES - FLOOD DEFENCE IMPORTANCE The Middle and South Level Barrier Banks contain Bedford Ouse flood flows within the Ouse Washes and are therefore vital for the flood protection of the Cambridgeshire Fens.
