....................................................................... 53 5 1 INTRODUCTION Il y a des sujets éternels dans la littérature comme par exemple : la mort, l’amour, plus concrètement l’histoire de Romeo et Juliette, de Tristan et Iseut. Pourquoi justement ces deux couples amoureux ? L’histoire de Tristan et Iseut est plus vieille, plus adaptée mais peut-être moins connue que celle de Romeo et Juliette. Pendant les années, le roman de Tristan et Iseut était créé en plusieurs versions avec les différents déroulements mais toujours avec le motif de l’amour mythique et non-accompli. Je me suis décidé à comparer certaines versions qui existent depuis le Moyen Âge et décrire le déroulement, les personnages, les motifs de ces versions et les adaptations filmées de Tristan et Iseut. Pour cette raison, je voudrais m’occuper, dans mon mémoire de licence de quatre versions de l’histoire de Tristan et Iseut, comparer les différences dans le contenu et la forme. Il s’agira des deux vieilles versions de Béroul et de Marie de France et des deux du XXe siècle écrites par Joseph Bédier et Sophie Jolivet. Je comparerai le début, le déroulement et la fin des histoires, je présenterai les personnages de l’histoire et leurs caractéristiques et leurs rôles. J’aimerais également présenter en bref les auteurs. J’ai choisi ce thème parce que je suis fasciné par la variété des versions de l’histoire de l’amour de Tristan et Iseut qui est toujours actuelle. Je suis intéressée par ce thème de l’amour éternel et non-accompli. Pour analyser et comparer les quatre versions choisis, je suppose qu’il y a des éléments communs et des éléments différents. Par conséquent, j’aimerai présenter en quoi les auteurs se différent et pourquoi, s’il est possible de le trouver. Pour atteindre le but établi, il faut employer certaines méthodes, surtout, l’analyse des textes qui avaient été créés au Moyen Âge et réécrits en français du XXe siècle avec celles qui étaient adaptés au cours du même siècle. Modern filmmakers have added to this legacy. Though audiences have enjoyed various contemporary film adaptations of these medieval romances, several essential elements are lost while translating the works to screen. This paper identifies a central motif in each work—King Arthur’s Round Table and Isolt’s love potion— that shapes the subsequent love triangle, and by extension, the representation and motivation of honor. While tracing the continued appearance of such components and their importance in the text sources of Geoffrey of Monmouth, Wace, Chrétien de Troyes, Thomas Malory, Gottfried von Strassburg, and Joseph Bédier, this paper will then discuss how each is manipulated by modern filmmakers and the lasting consequences on the legends as a result of such changes.     History Compass 5/1 (2007): 146±161, 10.1111/j.1478-0542.2006.00378.x Teaching the Middle Ages on Film: Visual Narrative and the Historical Record Martha Driver* Pace University Abstract This article provides an overview of some of the contentious issues concerning the role of film in historical studies of the Middle Ages. Is it appropriate to point out inaccuracies of detail in historical film? As a collective commercial enterprise, is a movie inherently limited in its portrayal of the past, and does this matter? How does film convention affect representation? Can movies err on the side of historical truth? What are the uses of purposeful or intentional anachronism? How have perceptions of movies changed with the advent of the paratext on DVD? How might movies with medieval themes be used effectively in the classroom? Responses to these and related questions are drawn from writings on film from 1915 to the present. Writing in 1915, Hugo Münsterberg proposed the foundation of ªa Universal Culture Lyceumº that would produce movies ªin science, history, religion, literature, geography, biography, art, architecture, social science, economics and industry . for the education of the youth of the land.º1 Despite Münsterberg's visionary prediction, the capacities of film to instruct and inspire are still somewhat subject to question. Developed over the last one hundred years and thus a comparatively new medium, as several proponents have pointed out,2 film has yet to demonstrate its full potential for teaching and recovering history. Nonetheless, film remains one of the most useful tools for talking about the Middle Ages, for conveying with graphic immediacy some subjects not fully conjured by the written word.

Although I consider various cultural influences, I emphasize the particular works (mostly literary) from which artists, musicians, and filmmakers appear to have drawn their primary inspiration. (JTG) he legend of Tristan and Iseult has had a long and remarkable history.1 TOriginating apparently as an oral tale to which the troubadours allude as early as the eleventh century, it is preserved in fragments of narrative poems in Anglo-Norman, Middle High German, Middle English, and Old Norse dating back to the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries. It was transformed decisively in the thirteenth century when it merged with the legend of King Arthur in the French prose Tristan, a work which then spawned variations in Italian and Spanish. The prose Tristan was later preserved in abbreviated form in late fifteenth-century printed editions and—quite differently—in the vast middle section of Sir Thomas Malory’s Morte Darthur. After experiencing a lull in the early modern period, the legend was again revived in the nineteenth century with the appearance of new editions of Malory’s work and inaugural editions of the medieval verse romances, which inspired contemporary poets and artists. In the later decades of that century, Richard Wagner’s opera, Tristan und Isolde, left its powerful imprint on poets, artists, and eventually filmmakers, and, in the early twentieth century, Joseph Bédier’sRoman de Tristan et Iseut likewise influenced primarily book illustrators and filmmakers.

Honors Director ______________________________ Date LOVE WITH EXCUSE 3 Abstract The legend of Tristan and Isolde is perhaps the most influential Arthurian romance apart from Lancelot and Guinevere. It has been retold many times, with each iteration responding to its own unique cultural context as well as adopting varying approaches to the medieval traditions of courtly love. The works of Wagner, Malory, and Gottfried von Strassburg all develop different versions of the same three themes: sexuality, the worthiness of love, and death. These various reconstructions of Tristan and Isolde's story blend syntheses of courtly love and historically contemporary approaches to romance, but all three reinventions romanticize it; while Strassburg and Wagner idealize the love affair, Malory and Wagner also romanticize courtly love and the medieval Arthurian era itself.
