LGBTQ Organizations Unite to Combat Racial Violence CBST has co-signed this important letter condemning racist violence: “We, the under- signed, recognize we cannot remain neutral, nor will awareness substitute for action. The LGBTQ community knows about the work of resisting police brutality and violence. "We celebrate June as Pride Month, because it commemorates, in part, our resisting police harassment and brutality at Stonewall in New

York City, and earlier in California, when such violence was common and expected. We remember it as a breakthrough moment when we refused to accept humiliation and fear as the price of living fully, freely, and authentically.”

3

Learn More and Take Action

We recommend this list of “Anti-racism resources for white people,” which compiles excellent arti- cles, books, movies, and podcasts for learning how to deepen our engagement with anti-racist work. As we learn from Rabbi Tarfon in Pirkei Avot (The Eth- ics of the Ancestors), “It is not incumbent upon you to finish the work, but neither are you free to ab- solve yourself from it.”

Narda E. Alcorn Narda E. Alcorn is a Broadway stage manager and the chair of the stage man- agement department at Yale School of Drama. CBST is where Narda converted and where she had her adult bat mitzvah with Cohen and Kleinbaum. Narda and her wife Shelli are long-time CBST members with their children Malka and Noah Matan.

Boysie Boaz Dikobe Boysie was born in South Africa (legally named Botlhale Johannes Dikobe) and at- tended the National School of the Arts. He then left to join The South African Ballet Theater at age 16, also guesting with the Cape Town City Ballet.

In 2008, he was awarded a scholarship to attend The Washington School of Ballet be- fore moving to New York to join Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, an all-male comedy company that allows a safe space for dancers to do both male and female roles. After questioning when was the right time to convert since the age of 10, he found CBST and became a Jew by choice in October of 2019!

6 Cantorial Intern David Fair David is a rising 5th year Cantorial student at the Deb- bie Friedman School of Sacred Music of Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion. He has a BA in Theater from the University of Mary- land College Park, a Professional Studies Diploma and Artist Diploma from the Cleveland Institute of Music, and a Master’s in Sacred Music from HUC-JIR. He is a recent graduate of the UJA Graduate Fellowship of the UFA Federation of New York. Before CBST, David served as the Cantorial Intern with Kehillat Lev in Tel Aviv and Temple Beth in York, PA. Before entering cantorial school, David was a professional preschool teacher, teaching at the JCC of Greater Pittsburgh and Chicago Jewish Day School. David takes his role as an Anti-Racism educator very seriously, having been raised by his non-Jewish Black father and a non-person-of-color Jewish mother. Last year, he was proud to be a featured speaker at HUC-JIR’s annual Yom Iyyun, where the topic was “Experiences of Jews of Color—Creating the World We Wish to See.” He is currently writing his master’s thesis on “Musical Experiences of Black Jewish Americans.” COMPOSER FEATURE: John Rosamond Johnson John Rosamond Johnson was one of the most successful of the early African-American com- posers. Johnson was the younger brother of prominent composer and civil rights leader James Weldon Johnson. Together, they produced two popular all-black operettas on Broad- way, The Shoo-Fly Regiment (1906) and The Red Moon (1908). Other shows he wrote in- clude Congo Love Songs, My Castle on the Nile, and the enormously successful Under the Bamboo Tree in 1902. Lift Every Voice and Sing (1900) was so popular that the National As- sociation for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) dubbed it The Negro National An- them. Other well-known songs of his include The Maiden with the Dreamy Eyes, Didn’t He Ramble, and Li’l Gal, Since You Went Away. His compositions for the piano include The Me- rango (1905), The Siberian Dip (1911), Tango Dreams (1914), and The African Drum Dance No. 1 (1928). One of Johnson’s major accomplishments was the 1918 founding of his school in Harlem called the New York Music School Settlement for Colored People.

Out of the ruins and rubble We can build a beautiful city Out of the smoke Yes we can, yes, we can Out of our night of struggle We can build a beautiful city Can we see a ray of hope? Not a city of angels One pale thin ray reaching for the day But we can build a city of love

We can build a beautiful city Yes, we can, yes, we can) We can build a beautiful city When your trust is all but shattered Not a city of angels When your faith is all but killed But we can build a city of love You can give up bitter and battered Or you can slowly start to build! We may not reach the ending But we can start A beautiful city Slowly but truly mending Yes, we can, yes, we can Brick by brick We can build a beautiful city Heart by heart Not a city of angels Now, maybe now But finally a city of love We start learning how

11 Sunday’s 25th Annual Benefit Concert makes history!

On Sunday afternoon, hundreds of households across the country and around the world came together online to experience a glorious livestreamed milestone concert.

The diverse program, curated by our Music Director, Joyce Rosenzweig, was selected as the pandemic's fury brought fear and loss to our world, but has taken on even more meaning in the last weeks, as racial protests have erupted. The performances were deep and full of emotion, and brought listeners much-needed solace, healing, and hope.

We are so proud to share this recording of the entire Concert and the Zoom-Meet-the-Art- ists Conversation that followed. You can view/download the Concert Journal-Program. Our magnificent CBST Chorus performed in a first-ever online format--an amazing achievement! Sally Wilfert (who brings tears to our eyes with her singing at Yom Kip- pur Yizkor services) and ALL our past and present cantorial interns performed: Cantors David Berger, Magda Fishman, Jason Kaufman, Dan Singer, Steve Zeidenberg, Re’ut Ben-Ze’ev, David Fair, and Sam Rosen. The CBST Concerts for Social Justice chamber music quintet, Adria Benjamin, Tomoko Fujita, Adrienne Kim, Sebu Sirinian, and Lisa Tipton, performed as you have never heard or seen them before.

All contributions to our benefit concerts help fund Music at CBST. Thank you, thank you, to everyone for stepping forward, at all levels, to make a gift that enables us to bring mu- sic into all our lives throughout the year.
