Vladamir Cacala and the Gelb House (1955) G. Elliot Reid Eisenman writes of a "modernism of alienation"1 which arises in the anxiety of dislocation, an architecture of "an alienated culture with no roots." "Architecture has repressed the individual consciousness in the physical envi ronment that is supposed to be the happy home. I think it is exactly in the home where the unhomely is, where the terror is alive-in the repression of the unconscious. What I am trying to suggest is that the alienated house makes us realise that we cannot only be conscious of the physical world, but rather also of our own consciousness. "2 I feel that a rootless alienated repression can be a central fact of life in New Zealand, par ticularly for the exiled immigrant, to which architecture on the whole usually chooses to 'turn a blind eye,' that architecture refuses to engage with a social disintegration and a repression, preferring instead to fragment itself, submerge itself uncritically into its own condition. 75 The Gelb House I refer to a work by such an exile, Vladimir Cacala, the Gelb House, Mount Albert (1955). Cacala's work on the whole remained committed to a small circle of influences, choosing to explore a reduced vocabulary of architectural forms. (This alien ground holds no memory, no associative value for Cacala.) The typical Cacala house comprises two enveloping walls with large expanses of glass to the north; planes pushed forward at floor and roof level in the manner of Richard Neutra (for example the Kun house, 1936, or the Davis house, 1937). -

Copyright © 2009 Population Association of New Zealand The Demographic Transformation of Inner City Auckland WARDLOW FRIESEN * Abstract The inner city of Auckland, comprising the inner suburbs and the Central Business District (CBD) has undergone a process of reurbanisation in recent years. Following suburbanisation, redevelopment and motorway construction after World War II, the population of the inner city declined significantly. From the 1970s onwards some inner city suburbs started to become gentrified and while this did not result in much population increase, it did change the characteristics of inner city populations. However, global and local forces converged in the 1990s to trigger a rapid repopulation of the CBD through the development of apartments, resulting in a great increase in population numbers and in new populations of local and international students as well as central city workers and others. he transformation of Central Auckland since the mid-twentieth century has taken a number of forms. The suburbs encircling the TCentral Business District (CBD) have seen overall population decline resulting from suburbanisation, as well as changing demographic and ethnic characteristics resulting from a range of factors, and some areas have been transformed into desirable, even elite, neighbourhoods. Towards the end of the twentieth century and into the twenty first century, a related but distinctive transformation has taken place in the CBD, with the rapid construction of commercial and residential buildings and a residential population growth rate of 1000 percent over a fifteen year period. While there are a number of local government and real estate reports on this phenomenon, there has been relatively little academic attention to its nature * School of Environment, The University of Auckland. -

We are excited to be offering Te Aho I Muri Nei – Supporting Innovation as a forum in which we can all share ideas, perspectives and experiences and engage in constructive dialogue to expand our thinking and weave links that connect us to people, knowledge, theory and practice in the Arts. It gives me great pleasure to welcome so many distinguished guests and participants who have come from near and far to take part in our proceedings over the next three days. As a local, I welcome you to our city and hope you all have an opportunity to enjoy some of what Auckland has to offer. I would also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank our host and major sponsor AUT, and in particular, the Art and Design School for partnering this conference. Your support has been a tremendous help in the shaping and success of Te Aho I Muri Nei – Supporting Innovation. We are privileged to share in your state of the art facilities and welcoming generosity. I hope that these next three days not only provides an opportunity to communicate, but also to collaborate - through interesting and fruitful discussions and conversations, fresh ideas and a new impetus for our work. -

Te Rimu Tahi Ponsonby Road Masterplan - Maori Heritage Report June 2013 Ngarimu Blair for Auckland Council 1 1. Introduction The Waitemata Local Board and representatives from a number of community groups (supported by Auckland Council and Auckland Transport) are working together to develop a Master Plan for Ponsonby Road. The Ponsonby Road Master Plan will present a comprehensive blue print for improvement to the urban realm of Ponsonby Road over the next 30 years. The Master Plan will be prepared following a ‘complete street/ living arterial’ approach. The Master Plan is intended to facilitate the achievement of an urban realm that better meets the community's desired outcomes in the future. The Auckland Council commissioned this report on Maori heritage values and opportunities from Ngarimu Blair in order to better engage with relevant Iwi for the project area. The Iwi listed by Auckland Council for this project includes Ngati Te Ata, Te Aakitai, Ngati Whatua Orakei, Te Runanga o Ngati Whatua, Ngai Tai ki Tamaki, Ngati Maru, Ngati Paoa and Te Kawerau a Maki. Specifically the brief for this report is; Background research to identify areas of past (pre-European) Maori Occupation, Use and activity within the Ponsonby Road Master Plan study area; Background research to identify the more recent history of Urban Maori activity within the Ponsonby Road Master Plan study area; and Preparation of a short report outlining the findings of this research, which specifically provides: (1) an historic context statement; (2) a short issues analysis that identifies high-level positive, negative, and neutral issues (with regard to cultural heritage) and gaps in information that could not be filled through research or within the timeframe; and (3) recommendations for preservation, protection or celebration of the cultural heritage. -

This is not say he is loud, brash or that he has a great deal to say, or any other American stereotype one might associate. Rather, it is quite the opposite. It may well be because he possesses a Master of Arts in Literature, a Master of Fine Arts in Fiction and a Litt D. (Hons) from our own Victoria University in Wellington. It could also be because, as The Listener magazine wrote, he is arguably the single biggest influence on New Zealand literature in this country and an exceedingly generous philanthropist. Schaeffer first visited New Zealand in 1994 and since then has immersed himself wholeheartedly in the literary and visual arts scene in this country. His commitment to the arts goes well beyond his propensity for collecting major New Zealand, Australian and American artworks to being the founding patron and benefactor of Victoria University’s International Institute of Modern Letters which awards the biannual Prize in Modern Letters to major new writers. He is also a benefactor of Nelson’s Suter Gallery. Schaeffer is also, of course, a very successful businessman. He was formerly President and Chief Financial Officer of Las Vegas-based Mandalay Resort Group for twenty years, one of America’s top hospitality and entertainment companies. -

EXHIBTION HISTORY 1999 – 2009 Manufacturing Meaning: The University of Wellington Art Collection in Context 22 September 1999 31 January 2000 The inaugural exhibition of the Adam Art Gallery showcased ten key works from the university collection, spanning a period from the 1930s to the present. The works of Frances Hodgkins, John Weeks, Gordon Walters, Colin McCahon, Ralph Hotere, Michael Smither, Jacqueline Fahey, Richard Killeen, John Pule and Peter Peryer were each presented in relation to the artist's practice or ideas and issues raised by the work, and each was accompanied by a catalogue. Manufacturing Meaning offered important new insights into the history of New Zealand art, through the research and presentation of selected critical thinkers curators, art historians, writers and artists Elizabeth Eastmond, Linda Tyler, Damian Skinner/ Ngarino Ellis, Ewen McDonald, Jack Body and David Crossan, Stuart McKenzie, Anna Miles, Greg Burke, Lisa Taouma, and David Maskill. Concept Curator Christina Barton Language Matters MaryLouise Browne, Terrence Handscomb, L.Budd et al, Colin McCahon, Joanne Moar & Lucy Harvey, and Michael Parekowhai 11 February 26 March 2000 Language Matters brought together six New Zealand artists who use language in their practice in varied forms and with diverse intentions. The exhibition acknowledged the pervasive presence of spoken and written language in contemporary New Zealand art.
