WAt that time Marvin owned three dealerships: Trucks of Texas in Houston, Texas; Superior GMC—Peterbilt also in Houston; and he had his original Peterbilt, GMC dealership in San Antonio. Today he has 50 dealerships. When we sold new trucks, we had to build the truck with a big 10-pound Data Book, carbon paper, and five data sheets to put all the information on. There were no computers with great programs to build the new trucks in those days. We had no fax machines in the beginning. The F & I department would manually call the credit applications into the finance company. We were all amazed by the fax machine! How could a machine do what it did? We were all in amazement that this technology existed. (WOW!) All the paperwork was manually typed on a typewriter. Gee, how would you like to have been in typewriter sales? My first car phone was $2,500. It was an AT&T Okie that was physically mounted Front Row, L to R: Tom Pfeiler, Sheri Aaberg, to the car floorboard with an antenna on the back glass. By the time I got it paid Bryan Haupt, Lara Haag, Bryan Boyd. for, it was obsolete and when it broke it was not worth fixing. Two years later we Back Row, L to R: Bobby Williams, Jon Tepper, had bag phones. What a great deal. Now you had an ugly black bag to carry with Tim Ronan, Marty Crawford, Eddie Walker, you everywhere you went, but at least you were mobile. Then the next great George Barnett, Tim Ormsby. Rick Clark not available at time of photo. invention came, the Brick Phone. This was really awesome, 12 inches with an antenna. We were really making headway. Today you can buy the best for around $150 and put it in your pocket. You can use it to play games, listen to President Marty Crawford music, and text. “Text”— I never heard of that word until recently. We had absolutely no voicemail. Vice President Rick Clark So much for phones, now let’s talk computers and the Internet. We sell trucks with a computer and e-mails now. Wow. You can send pictures to Treasurer your customer while you are talking to him on the phone! I still cannot Tom Pfeiler believe it today. Who would have thought that? All the new words in our vocabulary for a truck Secretary salesperson, digital camera, website, e-mail, text. And think of the changes in the trucks we sell. Bryan Haupt When I first started, the engines were Detroit Diesel 6V92 Cummins NTC-290 Small Cam, Detroit Diesel 6-71 and then Cummins NTC-350 President Emeritus Big Cam; we were getting to big motors then. Eddie Walker We used to have White Motor Company, Affiliates & Benefits Committee Autocar, Diamond Reo…now you know Chairman my age. We used to tell the customer we Bryan Boyd would send him truck pictures, and that Convention Committee Chairman would take a minimum of three days. Step Tim Ormsby one, take pictures. Step two, run get them developed, Step three, run back to the Education and Fundraising dealership, and put them in the mail. Step Committee Chairman Tim Ronan four, call him three days later to see if he got them. Elections Committee Chairman George Barnett Now today we ask ourselves if we are any better off. My opinion would be yes, but I think the world moves a lot faster and is a lot more Marketing Committee Chairman stressful. Life goes on and the new technology will continue to amaze us all. Just imagine what Lara Haag the future holds for the truck salesperson and the truck dealerships, Medium-Duty Committee Chairman mechanics, and the trucking industry. It will be amazing. The last 30 years Tom Pfeiler have been unbelievable, so the next 30 should be great! n Membership Committee Chairman Sheri Aaberg Training Committee Chairman Bryan Boyd Jon Tepper [email protected] Website Committee Chairman Bobby Williams 2 May 2010 www.UTA.org UTA Industry Watch It’s always a treat to welcome new members to our organization.
