Instant messaging lets people send instant messages (text-based conversation) to each other over a network, such as across the internet by means of the relevant instant messaging software application. There are many systems available (MSN, Google Talk etc) unfortunately they may not be compatible with one another because each company wants to format their messages in a specific way and can see no advantage in letting other IM services have access to their 'clients'. There are software applications that try and bridge this gap (search Google). Instant messaging may also be present on company intranets that allow employees to communicate with one another rather than email. Another common use of instant messaging are the customer support services that appear on some organisations' website. Application based:

1) WhatsApp:- WhatsApp is a well-known instant messaging app that many users use to chat with friends and colleagues. One of the reasons behind the popularity of this app is its simplicity of use. It is also reliable and you need not follow any lengthy sign-up procedure to use it. You only need an internet connection on your device, and then you can get connected on WhatsApp and send text messages, files, videos, and images. You can also enjoy video and voice calls.

2) Skype

Though Skype is more popularly known and used for video calling, its instant messaging ability cannot be avoided. Yes, you will have to log in before you can start using this tool, but that will not take much of your time. Once you sign in, you can enjoy numerous interesting features, send and receive instant texts, group chat, share file/media, emoji, and enjoy video and voice calling.

3) Messenger

Messenger is Facebook's official IM app, which has also gained popularity. It allows you to send text messages, share images, videos, GIFs, and enjoy video and voice calls. Using it you can instantly connect with those friends on your Facebook list..

Web – based Application :-

1. Meebo Meebo is simply the best web-based instant messenger I have ever used. Not only does it look clean, polished and very true Windows application-like, it also behaves exactly like one, courtesy of some really detailed JavaScript, XHTML and CSS. It also makes full use of AJAX, so it never feels like a website. Meebo is a perfect example of Web 2.0 and is the benchmark for all competing services. It runs inside just one browser window or tab, spawning multiple DIV-based conversation windows that don’t take up any extra taskbar space or memory, but you can pop a window out of the browser if you want to. The only problem with Meebo is that its interface looks exactly like some of the older, cleaner versions of Yahoo! Messenger and it doesn’t change even when you’re connected to MSN/Windows Live Messenger or something else.

2. MSN Web Messenger:- This should need no introduction. MSN Web Messenger is the original, official web-based client for MSN Messenger. It looks and feels almost exactly like MSN Messenger 7.x, including all icons, smileys and window trims. The main contact list window pops out on its own, and each conversation window also pops out. But even though the web-based client looks just like the original client, it doesn’t offer features that competing web-based messengers offer, such as being able to right click a user in the contact list for more options (i.e. viewing his or her profile). The other issue with MSN Web Messenger is that, since it’s the official alternative, it’s probably already blocked by your office sysadmin.

3. IMO:- imo.im is a web-based instant messaging service that allows users to connect to multiple third-party instant messaging networks and communicate via chats consisting of text, video, and voice. Third-party messaging services currently supported by the service include Google Talk, AIM, Myspace, ICQ, Yahoo Messenger, Skype, and Facebook. The user registration and sign up process requires an existing account with one of the supported third-party messaging services. Instant messaging with Google Hangout:-

Google Hangouts is communication software developed by Google. Originally a feature of Google+, Hangouts became a stand-alone product in 2013, when Google also began integrating features from Google+ Messenger and Google Talk into Hangouts. In 2017, Google began developing Hangouts into a product aimed at enterprise communication.

Hangouts is now part of the G Suite line of products and consists of two primary products: Google Meet and Google Chat. Google has also begun integrating features of Google Voice, its IP telephony product, into Hangouts, stating that Hangouts is designed to be "the future" of Voice. Google will shut down the classic G Suite version of Hangouts in June 2020 (being replaced by Meet and Chat), but will continue to support the consumer version of classic Hangouts.
