Welcome to the Presentation! Instant messaging is a faster form of type and, as the name suggests, allows for instant conversation via text. This presentation will provide information about IM tools as well as best practices.

1 There are many different IM tools available. Communicator and AIM, the America Online Instant Messaging service, are common tools for Kaplan faculty and staff. AIM is available through a free download that does not require installation of America Online. Chat and Yahoo are two other common types of IM tools. In most cases, IM and screen names are exclusive to that system. In other words, a user would not be able to communicate with an AIM user through IM without the use of an IM integration software.

2 IMs are intended for quick communications. Longer conversations or blocks of text are better suited for a telephone call or email. Like email, professional IMs should follow business etiquette and writing guidelines. Although it may be tempting to use cute or funny screen names that express your personality, it is better to refrain from those types of user names with professional communications.

Most IM programs have an indication of the user status, such as “available”, “away”, or “busy”. Two good etiquette tips for use with IM systems is to keep your status current and to respect the status of others. If a co‐worker is busy or away, don't try to message him or her or expect him or her to respond to !
