Wicklow woman breaks down stigma associated with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) It is estimated that at least 40,000 people across Ireland live with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, known collectively as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) and The Irish Society for Colitis and Crohn's Disease (ISCC) are working with IBD patients to help break down the stigma and embarrassment that a lot of people experience when discussing the condition, including Wicklow woman Aoife Mulhall.

Aoife has been living with IBD for nearly 10 years and is a passionate advocate for reducing the stigma associated with IBD and wants to help break down barriers and raise awareness. Aoife was diagnosed in 2010 when she was just 24-years-old. Since then she has been living with the incurable condition which, at its worst, has left her bed-bound and balled up in pain. Aoife has found the condition very isolating and embarrassing to live with. She often has to cancel plans last minute and travelling has been very difficult as she constantly has to be aware of her condition. Aoife found it very difficult to find information on other people's experiences when she was first diagnosed, and wants to help raise awareness to reduce the stigma, isolation. The Irish Society for Colitis and Crohn's Disease (ISCC) have conducted new research amongst its members in conjunction of its new mobile 'IBDWELL' app, revealing that: 88% of IBD patients feel anxious about the availability of toilets when they go somewhere new; Three quarters (75%) feel isolated when managing their IBD on a day-to-day basis; Over three quarters (78%) feel that their IBD has negatively impacted their mental health; the Majority (65%) feel there is stigma associated with Barbara Ziflinska and Miecia Judziat are pictured at the Bray Vintage IBD.
