i Published 2014 by ISCHE. ISSN 2313-1837 These abstracts are set in Baskerville Old Face, designed in 1757 by John Baskerville in Birmingham, UK. A writing master, businessman, printer and type designer, he conducted experiments to improve legibility which also included paper making and ink manufacturing. In 1758, he was appointed printer to Cambridge University Press, and despite his personal Atheism, printed a folio Bible in 1763. His typefaces were greatly admired for their simplicity and refinement by Pierre Simon Fournier, and Giambattista Bodoni. Benjamin Franklin, printer and fellow member of the Royal Society of Arts, took the designs to the US, where they were adopted for most federal Government publishing. SPRINGHALL THE BOY SCOUTS, CLASS AND MILITARISM IN RELATION TO BRITISH YOUTH MOVEMENTS 1908-1930* In the 1960's academic attention became increasingly focused, in many cases of necessity, on the forms taken by student protest and, possibly in conjunction with this, there appeared almost simultaneously a corresponding upsurge of interest in the history of organized inter- national youth movements, many of them with their origins in the late nineteenth or early twentieth centuries.1 Such a development in historiography would seem to contradict the statement once made by an English youth leader, Leslie Paul, that "because the apologetics of youth movements are callow, their arguments crude, and their prac- tices puerile, they are dismissed or ignored by scholars."2 It is certainly refreshing to see discussion of the Boy Scout movement rise above easy humour at the expense of Baden-Powell's more ec- centric views on adolescent sex education.3 Yet despite the change in historical perspective, very little has been done until comparatively recently to place Scouting, as this article cautiously attempts to do, * I would like to thank my colleagues - past and present - at the Lanchester Polytechnic, Coventry, and the New University of Ulster who commented on and made suggestions with regards to earlier drafts of this article. A GREEN LAND FAR AWAY: A LOOK AT ~E ORIGI NS OF THE GREEN Mo/EMENT In wodue ti on In a previous paper on German self-identity and attitudes to Nature (JASO, Vol. XVI, no.l, pp. 1-18) I argued that one of its main strains was a dissatisfaction with the shifting political and territorial boundaries of the nation and a search for a more authentic, earth-bound identity. This search led to a politically radical 'ecologism' which pre-dated National Socialism, but which emerged as an underlying theme in the Third Reich, reappearing in Germany well after the Second World War in more obviously left oriented groups. In this paper I want to examine the origins and growth of the Green movement itself in England and Germany. While the insecur ity of national identity in Germany was not exactly paralleled in England, the English experience nonetheless demonstrates a search for lost 'roots' after 1880. This crisis of identity fused with criticisms of orthodox liberal economists and mechanistic biolog ists to produce the ecologists and, later, the Greens. This is a shortened version of a paper first given to my own semi nar on Modern Conservatism at Trinity College, Oxford, in June 1985; it was subsequently delivered at a Social Anthropology semi nar chaired by Edwin Ardener at St John's College, Oxford, on 28 October 1985, and at the seminar on Political Theory organised by John Gray and Bill Weinstein at Balliol College, Oxford, on 1 November 1985. Notes have been kept to the minimum necessary to identify actual quotations and the mare obscure works I have cited. -

Introduction The Kindred of the Kibbo Kift was a British camping and campaigning organization founded in 1920. With over a thousand participating members and a raft of high-profile cultural supporters, it lasted for just over a decade. Established in the aftermath of World War I, its founding aims for cultural reconstruction were ambitious, including the complete overhaul of industry, education, and economics. Its covenant required members to commit to the delivery of a world currency, a world language, a world council of representatives, and world peace. The methods by which these grand aims would be achieved were highly idiosyncratic, incorporating hiking and handicraft alongside campfire ceremony and occult ritual. The organization’s founder-leader, John Hargrave (1894–1982), was a former Boy Scout Commissioner and a commercial artist. His organization united outdoor living and artistic practice with mystical beliefs and practices informed by Hargrave’s interests in non-Western religion and hermetic traditions. As such, Kibbo Kift’s propositions were more radical than those of other postwar social reform organizations. In its apocalyptic language, its preparations for the expected collapse of civilization, and its expected leadership of a new age, it sought to create a ‘magico-political’ fraternity of deified beings. Origins The founding of Kibbo Kift: The Woodcraft Kindred, as it was first known, took place on 18 August 1920 in London, with the first formal covenant launched by Hargrave and six other signatories. -
The Cultural Impact of Science in the Early Twentieth Century
In the early decades of the twentieth century, engagement with science was commonly used as an emblem of modernity. This phenomenon is now attracting increasing attention in different historical specialties. Frank James and Morag Shiach James and Morag Frank Robert Greenhalgh, Bud, Paul Edited by Paul Greenhalgh is Director of the Sainsbury Centre at the University of East Anglia, Edited by and Professor of Art History there. He has published extensively in the history of art, design, and the decorative arts in the early modern period. At their head, you might have seen their leader, White Fox, otherwise known as John Hargrave, who along with a group of like-minded pacifists, disgruntled ex-Scouts and woodcrafters set out to create a new social movement based on the principles of a healthy outdoor life, self-reliance, handcraft, and peaceful fraternity. They were the Kindred of the Kibbo Kift. 2 The movement was short-lived, and they never had more than a few hundred members, but their ambitions were global, and their extraordinary rituals, costumes and handcrafted objects, not to mention their charismatic front man, ensured their influence would continue on to today, and likely far beyond. A splinter group of the Kindred went on to become the Woodcraft Folk, an alternative scout-style organisation still operating today. -

To what TBC extent do these mirror or oppose practices of other youth organisations? To what extent can Woodcraft Folk be positioned at the vanguard of progressive educational practice in Britain? Has Woodcraft Folk influenced progressive educational develop- ments, and/or does it adopt and adapt ideas and practices from elsewhere? To what extent has Woodcraft Folk had a clear relationship with the Labour Movement? To what extent has Woodcraft Folk provided a political education similar to that of other socialist and democratic youth movements (e.g., Internation- al Falcon Movement / Socialist Education International)? In what ways has co-operative learning been central to Woodcraft Folk? How can this be understood as part of its relationship with the Co-operative Movement? How has that relationship shifted over time? How far have the educational practices and objectives of Woodcraft Folk been able to reflect and adapt to changing priorities and struggles in society, such as pacifism, feminism, environmental politics, anti-racism, civil rights, LGBTQ+ and disabled rights? Can we characterise Woodcraft Folk as a radical and disruptive organization or a more guarded and traditional one? Woodcraft Folk has a strong and proud tradition of internationalism. REDSKINS IN EPPING FOREST: JOHN HARGRAVE, THE KIBBO KIFT AND THE WOODCRAFT EXPERIENCE BY JOSEF FRANCIS CHARLES CRAVEN M.Phil A thesis submitted to the University of London for the Degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of History University College London Gower Street London SEPTEMBER 1998 1 ABSTRACT This thesis attempts to locate and explore the world of the Kibbo Kift, a camping and handicraft organisation established in 1920, by John Hargrave. The Kibbo Kift proved to be the most controversial, complex and colourful component of the English Woodcraft movement. The aim of this thesis is three-fold. First, to explain what is meant by the term Woodcraft and to examine the varied cultural influences that lay behind its growth in Edwardian England. Second, to give a more balanced and detailed historical account of the development of the Kibbo Kift, its secession from the Boy Scouts and its transformation into the Green Shirt Movement for Social Credit. Finally, it will orientate the movement within the English pro-rural tradition. In doing so, I hope to develop the idea of there being a collection of diverse and often contradictory strands within this culture, with the Kibbo Kift occupying a so-called pastoral Liberal-Transcendentalist stance, in contrast to the more agrarian Tory- Organic wing of the movement. It will be argued that the Kibbo Kift was ‘progressive’, forward looking and essentially ‘modem’, representing, in effect, a suburban interest in the inter-war countryside. However, the ultimate failure of the Kibbo Kift’s Woodcraft strategy adds to the argument that the English rural revival of this period was not as hegemonic as once thought and that pro-ruralism was limited in its cultural scope and impact. -

Intellectual Barbarians: The Kibbo Kift Kindred, Whitechapel Gallery, London, 10 October 2015 – 13 March 2016. ‘all the year round and every year at stated but irregular intervals the strangest nonsense-life breaks through the up, down, back, forth: a half-mad world skithers into the humdrum drone’1 On May 25 1928 a ‘Kibbo Kift Cartoon’ stated: ‘What happens in a field in Buckinghamshire may affect You and You and You’. Outline figures are sketched sitting in semi-circle around a totem and banners. Tents encircle the gathering. Urban figures stand below, called from their pavement existence to another life. Why, and how, might a Buckinghamshire field camp affect an urban ‘You’? The cartoon, entitled ‘Whitsuntide: the Kindred Meet in Camp’, publicised the ‘Al-thing’ of the Kibbo Kift Kindred, an Anglo-Saxon styled moot; it was reproduced in the 1979 reprint of The Confession of the Kibbo Kift (1927), by John Hargrave, leader and dominant personality of the Kindred.2 The Kindred have been an enigmatic, minor presence in histories of youth movements, an offshoot of the Scouts, rejecting Baden- Powell’s imperial vision of youth culture, and noted for archaic ritual and striking costumes.
