Farewell to Archbishop Robert James Carlson St Richard’s Catholic Church August 2020 Catholic Deaf Ministry Archdiocese of St Louis Farewell to Archbishop Robert James Carlson Our ninth Archbishop Robert James Carlson is leaving the Archdiocese of St Louis after serving 11 years. He retired on June 10, 2020 but he continues working with a new Archbishop until August 24th. He was so wonderful support to our Catholic Deaf Ministry and Deaf Catholic Community. When God called me to attend MFP (Ministry Formation Program for the Deaf) in Chicago, At this time, I was on unemployment and I couldn’t afford to pay the tuition, God told me to ask Archbishop Carlson. I was surprised that he was willing to pay in the full tuition. At first, I didnt know why God want- ed me to take MFP courses. Until during my third year, I finally figured out that He wants me to work with Him as a CDM. After I obtained the certification and Archbishop Carlson offered me for a full time position. I was thrilled and it was time for me to work with God for the rest of my life. God is so good! Interview with Archbishop Carlson. 1. Why did you decide to restart Catholic Deaf Ministry here in the Archdiocese? We restarted CDM because of the leadership that was available with Al’s train- ing and Fr Dan’s availability to be the Pastor and the location of St Richard Parish. 2. What is your hope for CDM and the Deaf Catholic Community? I hope the parish becomes a strong service to people who are deaf. 3. In the past, what was it like for you when you met a Deaf person for the first time? When I met a person who was deaf, I felt it difficult to communicate and knew we needed to do more. We want to thank Archbishop for his continued support of the Deaf Catholic Com- munity. We are saddened that he is retiring from his position as Archbishop of the Archdiocese of St Louis but we are happy for him for his next chapter of life. He was an amazing blessing! Please continue our prayers for him. By the way, CDM asked Archbishop Carlson about closed caption and interpreter on TV when he announces. During the celebration of new Archbishop on TV, there was closed caption and the interpreter! Thanks to him for his supporting the Deaf Community! Welcome to our Archdiocese of St Louis Archbishop Mitchell Rozanski On June 10 2020, Pope Francis appointed Bishop Mitchell T. Rozanski to lead the Metropolitan Archdiocese of St. Louis. Rozanski, 61, was former Bishop of Springfield, Massachusetts, where he has served since 2014. He succeeds Archbishop Robert Carlson, who presented his resignation to Pope Francis at the age of 75. A Baltimore native, Bishop Rozanski was born in 1958 at Balti- more, Maryland. He attended Catholic schools in the city. Then, he went seminary at the Catholic University of America, and in 1984 he was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Baltimore. He served in parish ministry, the archdiocesan curia, seminary and a monsignor in 2003. Bishop Rozanski was the youngest bishop in the United States. He went on to serve as chair of the U.S. bishops’ conference committee for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs and as a con- sultant to the National Association for the Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities. Bishop Rozanski, Polish-American also was co-chaired the Polish National Catholic – Roman Catholic Dialogue. The Polish National Catholic Church is an ecclesial community founded in the U.S. in the late 19th-century by Polish-American immigrants. He is a member of the Knights of Columbus and a Knight Commander of the Order of the Ho- ly Sepulchre of Jerusalem. I received Fr Joe Bruce’s email and I copied and pasted his message to share with you see be- low ….. I wanted to take the opportunity to say “Congratulations!” on your new archbishop. Bishop Mitchell Rozanski is the bishop of my home diocese: Springfield, MA. He is a very nice man. Almost every year bishop Mitchell celebrates the St Francis de Sales Mass for the Deaf Com- munity in Springfield diocese on the nearest Sunday to the feast of St Francis de Sales in Janu- ary. I think he is a very pastoral bishop. I have met him many times and feel free to mention my name to him. CDM is pleased to announce that one of the classrooms on the second floor will be converted into a new CDM library/room for the Deaf Catholic Community soon. Several people donated books, dvds, posters and more. This new room will be re- served for both CDM and CDS for board meetings and PSR (Parish School of Religion) for the deaf adults and children. (For events such as movie or general meeting, we will continue to use the Sacred Heart room on the first floor). Deaf Catholics who want to read books or other kinds of research material are welcome to our new room. Let me make a brief summary what will we do with new room…... 1. All the school desks and chairs will be removed out of the room as well coat racks for children, etc. 2. The tables and chairs from the rectory’s basement that we used for our general meetings and movies in the past will be moved to the new room. 3. Replace the carpet. (in the future) 4. Hope to get a nice sofa and comfortable chairs from donations 5. Build a new shelves for books and DVDs. 6. Hang several amazing large posters hanging on the wall. 7. The blackboard will be removed but the white board stays. 8. Have spot with a black background for video. 9. Store CDM material 10. Move CDS storage from the rectory to the second floor’s storage in the end of the hallway. 11. Our history’s photos hanging wall will be on the hallway at the first floor next to the Scared Heart room. We are hoping to get the following donations for the new room: 1. Sofa 2. Few comfort chairs 3. Three side tables and lamps 4. Books and DVDs that apply to religion. Annual Catholic Appeal Thank you for all of the work you have already done to make the 2020 Annual Catholic Ap- peal a success. Below is our current parish progress report. I want to thank everyone who has donated to this, as I know this is a very difficult time for many with everything that has been going on with COVID-19. The work of our greater Church throughout the Archdiocese is needed now more than ever. I encourage you to take a look at all of the great work that the various offices and ministries throughout the Archdiocese have been able to do, thanks to the generous support of parishioners throughout the Archdiocese of St Louis. We here at St Richard are thankful for the sizeable grant that we received through the ACA to go toward the new roof for the Parish Life Center, as well as for the funding that our Archdiocesan Office for Catholic Deaf Ministry (which is located here at St Richard) receives through the ACA as well! https://www.archstl.org/aca If you would like to return your pledge card, you may send it directly to the ACA Office at the Archdiocese, or you can return it to the Parish Office. Fr Dan Kavanagh. =========================================================================== FAQ Question: How can I find “Catholic Deaf Ministry” on website. Message from Susan Scholl, FSM President Franciscan Sisters of Mary Each of us has more than likely learned something about St. Francis in the course of our lives. These days he may come to mind even more frequently, given the presence of our current Pope who took the name of Francis. Pope Francis continues to model a Franciscan approach to life: through his care for those who are poor and on the margins of society; by his promotion of care of creation, especially through his encyclical Laudato Si’; and through his emphasis on mercy as one of the greatest virtues we can practice.

Amid the poverty and sometimes hope- lessness, there are beacons of hope, lights that shine with a stream of generos- ity. Some of that light comes from the work of members of the Order of Malta. Members of the American Association are deeply involved in on-going aid to these beautiful people, many of whom have no where else to turn.
