Carlo Maria VIGANÒ, arcivescovo tit. di Ulpiana Il primo embrione dell’attuale Conferenza episcopale degli Stati Uniti può essere fatto risalire al 1917, quando i vescovi americani costituirono il Consiglio Nazionale Cattolico per la Guerra (National Catholic War Council - NCWC) che avrebbe contribuito – con fondi e personale – all’assistenza spirituale e umana alle alle truppe americane dopo l’ingresso degli Stati Uniti nella Prima Guerra Mondiale. Negli anni che seguirono, nome e finalità dell’organismo mutarono, sostituendo anche la parola “Conferenza” al termine “Consiglio”, e nel 1922 venne istituita la National Catholic Welfare Conference, con sede a Washington D.C., il cui impegno era dedicato a temi importanti quali istruzione, immigrazione e azione sociale, secondo un modello conservato fino al 1966, quando vennero istituite la National Conference of Catholic Bishops (NCCB) e la United States Catholic Conference (USCC). Il 1° luglio 2001 la NCCB e la USCC si sono fuse in un unico ente, la Conferenza dei vescovi cattolici degli Stati Uniti (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops - USCCB), che continua il mandato dei due organismi preesistenti e la cui missione è di sostenere il ministero dei vescovi, con particolare attenzione all’evangelizzazione. La fusione è frutto di un lungo processo di ristrutturazione avviato nel 1992 ed è stata la più importante riforma strutturale dagli anni del Concilio Vaticano II. Tra le novità più significative del nuovo organismo figurano l'attribuzione di maggiori poteri decisionali alle Conferenze episcopali regionali e il raddoppio dei rappresentanti delle stesse Conferenze regionali nel Comitato esecutivo, l'organo decisionale più importante dell’USCCB dopo l'Assemblea plenaria. Le varie Commissioni episcopali, facenti capo a un vescovo, sono coordinate da un Segretariato. L’organizzazione della USCCB ha subito successivamente ulteriori modifiche per consentirle di focalizzare meglio le sue risorse sulle priorità pastorali fissate per il quinquennio 2006-2011: tra queste la promozione del matrimonio, delle vocazioni, della formazione alla fede dei fedeli e la difesa della vita e della dignità della persona umana. Insieme alla missione di evangelizzazione, la USCCB è impegnata con le singole diocesi in campagne umanitarie e sociali a livello nazionale e internazionale. La USCCB ha un proprio sito: http://usccb.org e una propria agenzia di informazione on-line, il “Catholic News Service” (CNS) (Fonti: www.usccb.org; agenzie - LZ) Le circoscrizioni ecclesiastiche La Chiesa negli Stati Uniti conta in tutto 195 tra diocesi e arcidiocesi. La loro suddivisione è così riassunta: 31 arcidiocesi cattoliche con 146 diocesi suffraganee; 2 arcidiocesi cattoliche di rito orientale o arcieparchie; 15 diocesi cattoliche di rito orientale o eparchie e 1 ordinariato militare. Tra tutte, l’arcidiocesi di Baltimora gode di una sorta di preminenza simile al primato, non previsto per gli Stati Uniti. Di fatto, nel 1850 fu affidata a Baltimora la cosiddetta “Prerogative of Place”, essendo stata la prima diocesi costituita nel Paese: era il 6 novembre 1789 quando Papa Pio VI promulgava la bolla apostolica “Ex Hac Apostolicae”, con la quale, dato il crescente numero di fedeli cristiani che abitava quei territori, istituiva la diocesi di Baltimora nominando come primo vescovo John Carroll. Unzählige Male bin ich in den vergangenen Wochen und Monaten gemeinsam mit meiner Frau nach Venedig und namentlich an den Markusplatz gekommen, um in der Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana mit ihren wunderbaren Mitarbeitern, allen voran Direktor Dr. Stefano Campagnolo und dessen Stellvertreterin Dottoressa Annalisa Bruni zu konferieren, die Ausstellungen unseres PORTFOLIO-Zyklus auf- und abzubauen, den feierlichen Eröffnungen beizuwohnen oder Interessierte zu führen. Routine kam dabei keine auf. Jedesmal wieder war es ein erhebendes Gefühl, hier anzukommen, hier temporär arbeiten zu dürfen und die Begeisterung für die besondere Architektur und kunstvolle Ausstattung der Bibliothek mit Menschen, die mir wichtig sind, zu teilen. Mit der nunmehr letzten PORTFOLIO-Ausstellung geht der dreiteilige Zyklus zu Ende, dessen erklärtes Ziel es war, parallel zur 58. Kunstbiennale von Venedig eine Auswahl ganz außergewöhnlicher Künstler mit repräsentativen Werken in den prachtvollen Sälen der Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana zu präsentieren.

    NRVC chose to take a closer look at our future, challenges, and hopes... Dear Friend of NRVC, In preparation for the 2008 presidential election, Americans around the country examined their values and priorities, and compared them with those of our two presidential candidates, so that they would be well-informed about the country’s present challenges and their own hopes for the country’s future. In a similar fashion, last year NRVC chose to take a closer look at our future, our challenges and our hopes so that we can be well- informed about what lies ahead. Our first priority was to launch a major study on vocations to religious life, in collaboration with the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA), which we did in the fall. When the results are finally released later this year, the “best practices” gleaned from this study will serve as a guide for religious insti- tutes to develop their future, vocation strategies. Complementing this project, the annual VISION survey from VocationMatch.com in- dicates a rise in the number of inquiries to religious life for the third year in a row—another hopeful sign for our future! Our Executive Board is also looking to secure the future of NRVC by identifying our major priorities for the coming three years as our previous strategic plan will be completed in 2010. The need, the energy, and the passion to promote new membership in religious life are there. I felt it in Louisville, KY, where approximately 450 vocation ministers processed through the downtown streets raising vocation awareness.
