Akpanglo-Narte y2 1Office of the Vice-President (Academic), Regent University College of Science & Technology, Accra, Ghana 2Department of Applied Linguistics, University of Education, Winneba, Ghana Abstract The phenomenon of language endangerment and, ultimately, language loss is considered in regard to indigenous Ghanaian languages. It is established that two languages, namely, Ghanaian English (GhE) and Akan, especially the Twi dialect, and to a small degree, Ewe, are slowly killing off the smaller Ghanaian languages. For instance, in 1970 almost all Winneba natives spoke Efutu (Ewutu) as their first language. By 2010, 40 years later, only approximately 50% of children born to the Winneba natives speak Efutu as a first language. About 30% of these children speak no Efutu at all. Interestingly, medium-sized languages such as Ga, Dangme and Nzema are also slowly losing grounds to the three languages cited. Meanwhile there are some dozen Ghanaian languages that have less than 1000 estimated speakers each but which have held their own for a century. It is concluded that the closer a language community is to the major urban centers, the more likely it is to be endangered. It is further concluded that the language policy of the Ghana Government is contributing to the loss of Ghanaian languages. He works with researchers and policymakers to promote evidence-based policy. Before joining the IGC, James worked for the UK’s Department of Energy and Climate Change, where he led several analyses to inform UK energy policy. Previously, he served as a lecturer at the Jonkoping International Business School. His research interests are in development economics, corporate governance, energy economics, and energy policy. James holds a PhD, MSc, and BA in economics and LLM in petroleum taxation and finance. David Lagakos is an associate professor of economics at the University of California San Diego (UCSD). He received his PhD in economics from UCLA. He is also the lead academic for IGC-Ghana. He has previously held positions at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis as well as Arizona State University, and is currently a research associate with the Economic Fluctuations and Growth Group at the National Bureau of Economic Research. His research focuses on macroeconomic and growth theory. Much of his recent work examines productivity, particularly as it relates to agriculture and developing economies, as well as human capital. Isaac Otoo is a research assistant who works with the team in Ghana. He has an MPhil (Economics) from the University of Ghana and his thesis/dissertation tittle was “Fiscal Decentralization and Efficiency of the Local Government in Ghana.” He has an interest in issues concerning local government and efficiency.

Introduction To facilitate the efficient clearing and settlement of interbank paper payment instruments throughout the country, cheques and other paper payment instruments were standardized to make them amenable to automated processing. The standardization included dividing the country into 11 clearing zones, with each zone having its clearing house; assigning a 6-digit unique sort code to each bank branch; and MICR-encoding paper payment instruments presented to the clearing house. A 6-digit unique sort code is also printed on all paper payment instruments. 2. Components of the sort code The sort code was developed to facilitate the clearing and settlement of interbank payment instructions according to the clearing zone within which the paying bank is located, as the case may be. The 6-digit sort codes are allocated based on pre-defined criteria to identify the bank, the clearing zone in which a bank branch is located and the branch number of the bank. Consider the sort code 01-02-03 - The first two digits (01) represent the bank’s code - The second two digits(02) represent the code of the clearing zone within which the branch of the bank is located - The last two digits (03) represent the branch’s code. On January 16, 2010 electronic clearing of cheques was introduced under the Cheque Codeline Clearing (CCC) with truncation system with nationwide coverage. All the clearing houses were collapsed and a new national clearing house was established.
