Die Ausstel- lungen 2017 stiessen bei den Besuchern, in Fachkreisen und den Medien auf reges Interesse: Bei ‹Schweizweit› (19.11.2016–07.05.2017) hat das S AM in Zusammenarbeit mit 162 Architekturbüros aus allen Landesteilen einen visuellen Atlas der aktuellen Schweizer Bauproduktion erstellt. Die Schau zeigte Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschie- de in den Themen, Inhalten und formalen Strategien, die Schweizer Architekten heute beschäftigen. Begleitend zur Ausstellung erschien die gleichnami- ge Publikation im Christoph Merian Verlag. Während der Schau ‹Forum Basel› (20.05.–18.06.2017) verzichtete das S AM auf den Eintrittspreis und stellte den Stadtbewohnern einen kommerzfreien Raum zur Verfügung – im ursprünglichen Sinne des ‹Museion› der griechischen Antike wurde das S AM zu einem Haus für ö¡entliches Leben. In Reaktion auf die zunehmende Kommerzialisierung der urbanen Räume untersuchten die Architekturbüros Kosmos Architects (Moskau / Basel) und Plan Común (Santiago de Chile) potentielle kollektive Räume in Basel. Die Ausstellung wurde im Kontext der Future Architecture Platform realisiert und vom Programm Kreatives Europa der Europäischen Union gefördert. Im Sommer stand ‹in Land aus Land. Swiss Architects abroad› auf dem Programm (01.07.–12.11.2017). Das Bauen im Ausland kann mit Risiken verbunden sein, trotzdem sind es nicht nur die grossen Namen, die im Ausland projektieren und bauen. In dieser Ausstellung präsentierte das S AM ausgewählte Beispiele gebauter und geplanter Projekte der letzten 10 Jahre. Das Augenmerk lag dabei auf dem Rückfluss dieser Arbeiten, also der Frage: Wie hat die Er- fahrung die lokale Praxis der Architekten beeinflusst? Im Dezember 2017 wurde die Ausstellung ‹Bengal Stream. The Vibrant Architecture Scene of Bangladesh› erö¡net. Das S AM widmet sich somit als erstes Museum weltweit der Architektur Bangladeschs. Die Schau versammelt über 60 Projekte von etablierten 6 und aufstrebenden Architekturscha¡enden in Bangladesch. Iwan Baan, einer der international bedeutendsten Architekturfotografen, war für das eindrückliche Bildmaterial verantwortlich. Begleitend zur Ausstellung erschien die gleichnamige Publikation im Christoph Merian Verlag. ‹Bengal Stream› wurde von den Besuchern, den Fachkreisen sowie den Medien derart gut aufgenommen, dass das S AM beschlossen hat, sie bis am 24.06.2018 zu verlängern. 2017 erhielt das S AM Schweizerisches Architektur- museum aber auch den Bescheid, dass es ab 2019 keinen Beitrag mehr vom Bundesamt für Kultur erhält. Dafür wurde die Architektur erfreulicherweise in der Basler Museumsstrategie verankert. Das S AM arbeitet nun mit Hochdruck daran, das Museum langfristig auf eine neue, solide finan zielle Basis zu stellen. Dabei ist es weiterhin auf die Unterstützung durch die ö¡entliche Hand, aber auch von Firmen wie Privaten angewiesen. Der Stiftungsrat hat Ende 2017 jedoch entschieden, die eigenen Reserven vorübergehend als Defizit- garantie zur Verfügung zu stellen, um die Neuauf- stellung zu ermöglichen. Das S AM will aber auch 2018 mit einem hochstehenden Programm überzeugen. Nach ‹Bengal Stream› (verlängert bis 24.06.2018) erlaubt die Installation ‹Portrait of a Landscape› des Künstlers Pierre Philippe Hofmann (07.07.–16.09.2018) die Wahrnehmung des Raums Schweiz aus ungewohnter Perspektive. Es folgt die Schau ‹Transform› (29.09–04.11.2018) und die mit Unterstützung des Bau- und Verkehrsdepartementes des Kanton Basel-Stadt entwickelte Ausstellung ‹Dichtelust› (24.11.2018–05 / 2019). Ein herzliches Dankeschön geht an dieser Stelle an die Vielen, die das S AM im letzten Jahr mit ihrem Engagement begleitet haben, an die Stiftungsräte, an die Museumsleitung und an alle ihre Mitarbeiter. Herzlich danken möchte ich auch allen Mitgliedern, Förderern und Sponsoren des S AM für ihre fort- währende Unterstützung und Treue. S AM Programms unter der Leitung von Direktor ARCHITETTURA RECENTE Andreas Ruby erö¡nete das S AM am 18. November IN SVIZZERA. 2016 die Ausstellung ‹Schweizweit›. RECENT ARCHITECTURE Das Bild der Schweizer Architektur ist bis heute IN SWITZERLAND.› stark von den 1990er Jahren geprägt, als sie schlag- artig weltweites Renommee gewann und zum 19.11.2016 – 07.05.2017 Vorzeigebeispiel des Minimalismus avancierte. Die Architekten, die damals für dieses ebenso redu- VERNISSAGE: zierte wie sublimierte Bauen standen – wie Herzog & 18.11.2016, 19.00 UHR de Meuron, Diener & Diener, Peter Zumthor, Peter Märkli etc. – gelten zumindest in der inter- nationa len Wahrnehmung auch heute noch als pars pro toto der Schweizer Architektur. Von den Archi- tekten der nachfolgenden Generationen, die seitdem immer aktiver ins Geschehen eingreifen, hört man deutlich weniger. ‹Schweizweit› macht sich auf die Suche nach den Architekturbüros, die seither nachgewachsen sind. Was und wo entwerfen und bauen sie und welche Inhalte und Themen sind für sie wichtig? Entstanden ist eine Topografie des architektonischen Arbeitens in der Schweiz. Die überraschende Vielfalt der präsentierten Positionen macht die positiven Potenziale für die Archi tektur sichtbar, die sich aus den kulturellen, historischen, sprachlichen und geografischen Di¡erenzen, die dieses Land so stark charakterisie- ren, erö¡nen. Diese erste Ausstellung unter der Leitung von S AM-Direktor Andreas Ruby spiegelt seine Vision für das S AM wider: schwellenlos, zeitgenössisch, kollaborativ, schweizweit. Zukünftig werden Austausch und Diskurs, ob ausstellungsbegleitend oder thematisch unabhängig, eine ebenso wichtige Rolle spielen wie die Ausstellungen selbst. Die Ausstellung wurde gefördert von: Stiftung Pro Helvetia Canton de Vaud SWISSLOS / Kulturförderung, Kanton Graubünden 11 12 ‹Forum Basel. Urbane Vom 20. Mai bis zum 18. Studien und Projekte, Kuratoren: in Kollaboration mit lokalen Architekten erarbeitet, Andreas Ruby, wurden ergänzt durch Interviews mit Protagonisten Stéphanie Savio des Bauens. Ko-Kuratoren: Je heterogener Gesellschaften werden, desto wichtiger Plan Común, wird es für Städte, o¡ene Räume zu scha¡en, wo wir Kosmos Architects uns als Teil einer Gemeinschaft erleben können. Im ursprünglichen Sinne des „Museion“ der griechischen Antike wird das S AM zu einem Haus für ö¡entliches Leben. In Zusammenarbeit mit: Caesar Zumthor Architekten, Focketyn Del Rio Studio, Manuel Herz Architects, Rahbaran Hürzeler Architekten, Scheibler & Villard, Vécsey Schmidt Architekten Die Ausstellung wurde im Kontext der Future Architecture Platform realisiert und vom Programm Kreatives Europa der Europäischen Union gefördert. 13 14 ‹in Land aus Land. Im Sommer stand die Ausstellung ‹in Land aus Swiss Architects Land. Swiss Architects abroad› auf dem Programm. abroad› Dass Schweizer Architekten ihr Glück im Ausland versuchen, ist kein neues Phänomen. Doch erst 01.07. – 12.11.2017 die Tessiner Tendenza und der Deutschschweizer Minimalismus verhalfen der Schweizer Architektur VERNISSAGE: international zum Durchbruch. Die Projekte 30.06.17, 19 UHR im Ausland sind häufig grösser, monumentaler oder experimenteller als diejenigen in der Schweiz. KURATOREN: Architekten wie Mario Botta, Bernard Tschumi, Peter ANDREAS RUBY, Zumthor, Diener & Diener und Herzog & de Meuron VIVIANE EHRENSBERGER haben international Wahrzeichen des Schweizer Bauens gescha¡en. RESEARCH AND DESIGN PROGRAM The Research and Design Program is dedicated to the study, design and planning of cities, settlements and landscapes. With the aim of facilitating the planned physical future of Bangladesh along with socio-economic development, the Program operates at various scales, from the regional to the small neighborhood. The research and design focus of the program includes regional contexts, small towns, public space, public transport, high density livability, hydrological dynamics, landscape forms and settlement patterns.

Das ab- wechslungsreiche Programm 2018 des S AM Schwei- zerisches Architekturmuseum stiess auf grosses Interesse und Anklang. Insgesamt haben 34’424 Personen letztes Jahr das S AM besucht. Im ersten Halbjahr konnte in ‹Bengal Stream. The Vibrant Architecture Scene of Bangladesh› eine neue Welt entdeckt werden: Als erstes Museum weltweit widmete sich das S AM der Architektur Bangladeschs. ‹Bengal Stream› wurde von den Besuchern, den Fach- kreisen sowie den Medien derart gut aufgenommen, dass das S AM die Ausstellung bis Ende Juni 2018 verlängert hat. Danach folgte im Sommer 2018 ‹Portrait of a Landscape› von Pierre-Philippe Hofmann. Der bel- gisch-schweizerische Künstler hat die Schweiz entlang von zehn Achsen wandernd durchquert – von den äussersten Grenzen bis zum geografischen Mittelpunkt: der Älggialp im Kanton Obwalden. Unterwegs hat Hofmann unzählige Aufnahmen an- gefertigt, aus denen sich ein gigantisches Panorama des Landes ergab. Das Museum setzte mit dieser Ausstellung seine Schweiz-Recherche fort, die es mit der Schau ‹Schweizweit› begonnen hat. Nach der Vermittlung eines architektonischen Porträts der Schweiz im 2016, wurde 2018 ein territoriales Porträt der Schweiz freigelegt. Im Herbst 2018 stand dann ‹Transform› auf dem Programm. Das S AM nahm sich damit dem Thema Umbauen an. Heute schrumpft die Halbwertszeit von Gebäuden rapide. Ändert sich ihre Funktion, werden sie oft einfach ersetzt. Doch die Kritik an dieser räumlichen Wegwerfkultur wächst.

Much has been written about his monumentality, his metaphysics, his ideas of construction, and his debts to classical antiquity. William J. R. Curtis The same is true of his beaux-arts formation, his obsession with ruins, and his interest in the geometrical structures of nature. Several later schools of thought have tried to “claim” Kahn as their chief mentor, from post-modernists to minimalists, but his architecture escapes these easy categories, as it touches much deeper, not to say archetypal, levels in experience. At times he even transcended the limits of Western architectural discourse, as when giving shape to the social and political aspirations of nations newly liberated from imperialism on the Indian sub-con- tinent. With both the National Assembly Complex in Dacca, East Pakistan (now Dhaka, Bangladesh (1962-1983)), and the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad (1962-1974), Kahn penetrated the substructures of the past and transformed them through his usual abstraction into resonant emblems of mo- dernity. To later architects seeking touchstones in tradition and preoccupied with questions of post-colonial identity, his solu- tions revealed new ways of synthesizing the new and the old, the local and the universal.2 It is impossible to understand Kahn’s Assembly in Dacca separately from the processes of nation-building.

An iconic example of American modern architecture in a non-Western, newly independent context, this project straddles binary yet interdependent categories: East–West, Pakistan–Bangladesh, modern–postmodern. If Kahn represents a transitional figure within twentieth-century architectural history, then at Dhaka this liminal status is uniquely amplified. This thesis examines the particular manifestation, in the Dhaka commission, of the architectural tropes that are central to Kahn’s attempt to rethink the meaning of a modern monument during the late 1950s and 1960s. The research method is informed by recent trends in critical historiography, in which non-Western, typically postcolonial, modernism is identified as a key agent in the internal critique, revision and ongoing development of mid-twentieth century modernism. The capitol complex of Dhaka presents an important yet hitherto unexamined case for this critical perspective. This occurs through a historiographic analysis of the literature on the project combined with a close architectural reading of the building design.
