The Culture of Queers
THE CULTURE OF QUEERS For around a hundred years up to the Stonewall riots, the word for gay men was ‘queers’. From screaming queens to sensitive vampires and sad young men, and from pulp novels and pornography to the films of Fassbinder, The Culture of Queers explores the history of queer arts and media. Richard Dyer traces the contours of queer culture, examining the differ- ences and continuities with the gay culture which succeeded it. Opening with a discussion of the very concept of ‘queers’, he asks what it means to speak of a sexual grouping having a culture and addresses issues such as gay attitudes to women and the notion of camp. Dyer explores a range of queer culture, from key topics such as fashion and vampires to genres like film noir and the heritage film, and stars such as Charles Hawtrey (outrageous star of the Carry On films) and Rock Hudson. Offering a grounded historical approach to the cultural implications of queerness, The Culture of Queers both insists on the negative cultural con- sequences of the oppression of homosexual men and offers a celebration of queer resistance. Richard Dyer is Professor of Film Studies at The University of Warwick. The Museum of Modern Art For Immediate Release June 1990 Twentieth Century Fox: 1935-1965 July 1 - September 11, 1990 This summer, The Museum of Modern Art pays tribute to Twentieth Century Fox with a retrospective of over ninety films made between 1935 and 1965. Opening on July 1, 1990, TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX: 1935-1965 traces three key decades in the history of the studio, celebrating the talents of the artists on both sides of the cameras who shaped this period. The exhibition continues through September 11. Formed in 1915, the Fox Film Corporation merged in 1935 with the much younger Twentieth Century to launch a major new studio. Under the supervision of Darryl F. Zanuck, Twentieth Century Fox developed a new house style, emphasizing epic biographies such as John Ford's The Prisoner of Shark Island (1936) and Allan Dwan's Suez (1938) and snappy urban pictures such as Sidney Lanfield's Hake Up and Live (1937) and Roy Del Ruth's Thanks a Million (1935). The studio also featured such fresh screen personalities as Tyrone Power, Alice Faye, and Shirley Temple. From this time on, the studio masterfully anticipated and shaped the tastes of the movie-going public. During World War II, Twentieth Century Fox made its mark with a series of exuberant Technicolor musicals featuring such actresses as Betty Grable and Carmen Miranda. After the war, the studio shifted focus and began to highlight other genres including films noirs such as Edmund Goulding's Nightmare Alley (1947) and Otto Preminger's Where the Sidewalk Ends (1950), wry satirical films such as Joseph L. -

Gary Cooper ~ 51 Films Frank James (later Gary) Cooper was born on 7 May 1901 in Helena, Montana. From the silent era through to 1961, Cooper built a solid reputation by playing strong, manly, distinctly American roles in a natural, understated manner. The son of English parents who had settled in Montana, in the years 1909-12 he lived and was educated in Dunstable, England. Otherwise, from the age of five, he spent his summers on his father's ranch in northern Montana and his winters in Helena, where for some time he was a near neighbour of Myrna Williams (later Loy). After finishing school he worked on the family ranch until 1922, when he enrolled at Grinnell College, Iowa to study art. After eighteen months of that, and some time in Chicago and Helena, fortune took his parents (and so him) to Los Angeles. After weeks of struggling to find gainful employment, he met two Montana friends, Jim Galeen and Jim Calloway, who were working as film extras and stunt riders in low-budget Westerns. They introduced him to another Montana cowboy, rodeo champion Jay "Slim" Talbot, who hooked Cooper up with a casting director. (Talbot later worked as Cooper's stuntman and stand-in for over thirty years, becoming a close friend and hunting companion in the process.) Cooper accepted work as a film extra for five dollars a day and a stunt rider for twice that amount with the intention of saving enough money to pay for a professional art course.
