First City National Bank of Austin 9th and Congress A FIRST CITY BANCORPORATION MEMBER MEMBER FDIC© 1981FCBOT A NOTE TO OUR PATRONS Welcome to our production of "Equus," the final production of our 1981-82 major season, starring Mr. Peter Mark Richman. Mr. Richman, along with all the guest artists who have appeared on our stage, is here because we in theatre believe our program is dualistic in nature . It em braces the responsibility of providing its students with the basic training, education and experiences necessary for the pursuit of potential theatre careers in either professional, educational or community theatres. Secondly, the theatre embraces the responsibility of providing its stu dents with the knowledge and abilities to live full, rewarding and produc tive lives. The dual nature of the theatre program seeks to develop and graduate student artists who are sensitive, aware and total human beings . Our program is grounded in classroom training as well as performance, observation and association with theatre professionals. We will continue to bring guest artists from the world of professional theatre to appear on stage with faculty and students. We believe that by exposing our stu dents to qualified professionals in production and by providing them with demanding but exciting and meaningful classroom training and ex perience, we can come closest to realizing our stated philosophy. To accomplish our goal, we will need the continued support of all of you who have been so generous with your time, energy and contribu tions, but more than this, it is imperative that we increase the base of our support. We extend an invitation to all of you to become more active ly involved in the important and exciting work of the next ten years. Donald W. Seay Director of Theatre

A LOOKAHEAD Under the able leadership of Program Director Donald W. Seay, the St. Edward's University Theatre Program will be implementing many excit ing innovations in the coming years. One example is the new Women's Plays and Playwrights Program. This program plans to produce in January a new play by a woman playwright featuring a cast of women characters and dealing primarily with women's issues. The guest playwright, chosen after an extensive selection process, will be on campus during the re hearsal process, work with cast and director and see her play come to life on stage. The program has already won the endorsement and support of Dr. Gladys Crane, the President of the Women's Theatre Program of the American Theatre Association and promises to win further national rec ognition for the St. Edward's Theatre Program. Besides exemplifying St. Edward's concern with the women's movement and women's issues, the new Women's Plays and Playwrights Program adds yet another show to our full season and increases the diversity of the theatre's offerings. ABOUT THE GUEST ARTIST Peter Mark Richman comes to St. Edward's after com pleting his second season as Blake Carrington's attorney on the hit series, "Dynasty:' Drawing from a phenomenal well of experience on the Broadway stage, motion pictures, theatres, and television, Mr. Richman is one of this coun try's most sought after actors. Recently Mr. Richman starred in "The Owl and the Pussycat" in Atlanta and the long-running hit "Hold Me" at the Westwood Playhouse in . Along with his acting abilities, Mr. Richman is also recognized as a writer and painter. Noted art critic Richard Simon referred to him as "a Renaissance Man" in referring to one ,of Mr. Richman's recent one-man shows at the Crocker Museum in Northern . ABOUT THE DIRECTOR Donald W. Seay makes his directing debut at St. Edward's University with this production of "Equus:' The dymanic new Director of the St. Edward's Theatre Pro gram brings to the program a solid balance of professional and academic experiences. His training and · involvement have covered every aspect of theatre at professional, educa tional and community levels. Mr. Seay joined the St . Edward's faculty in fall 1981 as Artistic Director and in January 1982 was named Director of Theatre. Readers of plays, as distinguished from spectators, cannot escape try ing to imagine plays in performance . Peter Shaffer in his notes on "Equus" goes to unusual lengths to assist the reader in this task. Until a film version of "Equus" appeared in 1977 all productions were copies of the original London production . The London production was directed and designed to emphasize the playing of a play. It sought not the illu sion of reality but rather the reality of illusion and because of this the audience was forced to use its imagination to fill in the visual and emo tional gaps in the stories . Though we have made no attempt to copy the London production (an impossible task as it was performed on a prosce nium stage) we have attempted to accomplish the same ends. We invite you, the audience, to advance imaginatively toward the revelation and perhaps the solution - of a mystery .
