LIVING ON MAIN STREET • 6 WELCOME

WELCOME TO DOWNTOWN TOCCOA DDA Chair, Mr. Clint Sanders

As Chairman of the Downtown Development Authority (DDA), I am proud and hon- ored to lead the efforts in continual improvement in quality of life in Downtown Toc- coa. The DDA guides Main Street Toccoa in the implementation of goals set forth by the Toccoa City Commission. Made up of seven downtown businesses and property owners, the DDA works hard to represent the community’s interest downtown.

As part of our efforts, we oversee a competitive façade grant program that has con- tributed to the overall beautification efforts downtown. I’m also proud to say that we have been designated a 2018 PlanFirst and 2018 Rural Zone Community, one of the first 9 in the State of Georgia. These programs allow us to provide special tax credits to downtown business and property owners.

Downtown Toccoa showcases the charm and hospitality of our beautiful city. Enjoy your visit downtown, and we hope you’ll come back to visit us.

WELCOME TO MAIN STREET Main Street Manager, Christian Hamilton

When one thinks of “Main Street,” imagery typically includes scenic store- front-lined streets, families walking, unique shops, and more. The hustle and bustle of a city can best be seen in a concentrated Main Street District. Downtown Toccoa is no different. Here at Main Street Toccoa, we focus on continued business recruitment and retention in Downtown Toccoa through a targeted effort focused on design, organization, promotions, and economic development. We are working with the DDA this year to implement several things downtown. These include:

• The complete restoration work of the Ritz Theatre balcony, to be concluded by January 2019. STAFF: CHRISTIAN HAMILTON, SHARON CROSBY, CONNIE TABOR, • Installation of Phase II of our Downtown Wayfinding Signage, to be DANITA GAUDETTE, VICKY KING, BRADLEY JORDAN concluded by June 2019.

• Continued recruitment of new business for downtown and the pro- motion of existing businesses.

As Chairman Sanders stated above, we are excited about our new Plan- First and Rural Zone designations. As one of few communities with both of these designations, you can be confident that Downtown Toccoa is not only a great place to locate your business, it’s simply a great place to be!

LIVING ON MAIN STREET • 13 TRAVEL BACK IN TIME

When walking the streets of Downtown Toccoa, you’re sure to see rich green and bronze plaques located on nearly every storefront. Main Street Toccoa is proud of its active historic plaque program, which has seen over 50 plaques installed since it began several years ago.

The Main Street Toccoa Historic Plaque program highlights the unique storefronts and people that have inhabited Downtown Toccoa in years past.

The program is presented as part of a coordinated effort by Main Street Toccoa, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Historic Preservation Division, and the Georgia Department of Community Affairs.

Whether it’s the McNeely & Company building, whose catchphrase, “from the cradle to the grave,” was apt in that the business constructed furniture, operated as a mortu- ary, and grew as a casket company, or the Studio, featur- ing the original hand-crafted bricks from the old Toccoa Brickyard, there is so much history in Downtown Toccoa that needs to be shared.

This is why Main Street Toccoa has created an historic plaque walking guide. This walking guide is not only free- of-charge, but features full-color photographs and narra- tives on durable glossy paper to follow along with as you walk the historic plaques.

Begin your journey at the Historic Train Depot as you enjoy the deep history of the Currahee Military Museum, then weave your way through the back alleys and across the railroad tracks as the walking guide takes you through quaint nooks and across the Main Street, ending your trek downtown at the Ritz Theatre in time for popcorn and a movie. If you haven’t had enough fun already, head out to the Lake Toccoa for one final historic plaque and enjoy an ice-cold beverage on the lakeside patio at Ping’s Grill.

Each plaque referenced in the guide features particular tidbits of information about the historic structures them- selves, relating to building construction, materials used, tenants over the years, and much more. Come by the Main Street Office and pick up your free walking guide today. For more information, visit www.mainstreettoccoa.com.

Their training and military fighting in the European and Pacific Campaigns have been featured in movies such as HBO’s Band of Brothers, Saving Private Ryan, Airborne Creed, and The Dirty Dozen, officially known as Toccoa Men, The Filthy Thirteen.

Featured exhibit is an original horse stable from Aldbourne, England that was used as housing before and after DDay 1944 by Able and Easy Companies, 506th. The stable, 70 feet long, is located inside the museum and showcases each of

LIVING ON MAIN STREET • 20 “CURRAHEE:” A BATTLE CRY!

Just imagine it. You’re standing on a C-47 flying over France. The year is 1944. The door is open as the biting wind smarts your cheek. You see the light above the door turn green as your commanding officer yells, “Currahee!” and your squad jumps out of the plane into the battle below.

Scenes like this have played out over many books and movies over the years. All of them revolve around a special group of men that trained right here in Toccoa as paratroopers at Camp Toccoa. What many don’t realize is that the men of the 506th Infantry Regiment did not only serve America during WWII, but continue to do so today.

“Currahee!” is still the battle cry of courageous men and women who serve our country.

In World War II, “Currahee!” was proclaimed on D-Day, during Oper- ation Market Garden, at Bastogne and the overarching Battle of the Bulge. “Currahee!” was yelled in Vietnam from 1967 – 1971 and in Sinai in 1984. The brave men of the 506th Infantry Regiment were stationed in South Korea in 1987 and “Currahee!” served as the battle cry of the 506th in Iraq in 2004 and in Afghanistan in 2008.

The regiment is active today. And every single one of those men and women who serve in it understand its history began right here in Toc- coa, Georgia. Come visit our Currahee Military Museum and see thou- sands of exhibit pieces, including the actual stable from Aldbourne, England where the “Band of Brothers” stayed during WWII. Then take a short drive to Camp Toccoa at Currahee and see the camp in a pro- cess of revitalization. The Col. Sink Memorial Trail leading 3 miles up and 3 miles down is right nearby, and gives you the opportunity to run the same ground that our brave soldiers ran.

EXPERIENCE “CURRAHEE!” RIGHT HERE IN TOCCOA.

Come out and enjoy the Lake Toccoa Recreational Park today, and watch as it grows in the coming years. There’s a new park on the horizon, however.

The Lake Toccoa Recreational Park, as city officials are calling it, takes the existing facilities at Lake Toccoa and improves upon them in meaningful ways. City-owned and operated, Lake Toccoa is not only the City of Toccoa’s water supply, but the prettiest view in all of Northeast Georgia.

Citizens and visitors alike can enjoy the expansive 9-hole golf course at the Links at Lake Toccoa, enjoy a burger and one of doz- ens of craft beers and regional wines at Ping’s Grill, a fully-restored 1940s-era Army Officer’s Club with a lakeside patio, and book an event at the fully-restored Reflections at Lake Toccoa event center.

If you visit Lake Toccoa today, you’ll see that work is being done next to Ping’s Grill. This is the site of a pavilion, to be installed in the coming months. This large pavilion, situated by the lake, will ca- ter perfectly to weddings, birthday parties, concerts, meetings, and more. And in several months, a pier will be constructed also. This pier will allow for fishing and also have paddle boat slips, allowing citizens to enjoy the beautiful lake.

LIVING ON MAIN STREET • 28 TOCCOA IS A TREE CITY

Here in Downtown Toccoa, we appreciate our trees. Downtown design can be seen as something of an “urban forest,” and trees contribute not only to the natural beauty of an area, but, especially in a downtown, the historic accuracy of the area.

Because we recognize the importance of trees, in 2006, Toccoa was first des- ignated as a Tree City USA at the Georgia Arbor Day Ceremony by the Georgia Urban Forest Council. What does this mean?

It means that we spend at least $2 per capita on tree planting, maintenance, prun- ing, and education in our efforts to beautify the City of Toccoa through natural ef- forts. It means we have a Tree Ordinance and a Tree City board (our Planning Com- mission), both of which help to determine uniformity in design and maintenance.

As a Tree City, we host a yearly Arbor Day celebration, usually culminating in the planting of trees downtown. This past year, we hosted Tim Womick, the “modern-day Johnny Appleseed,” who taught our school-aged children all about trees and the ecosystem.

Being a Tree City isn’t just a designation. It’s a way of life for us. That’s why we are proud to have been awarded the 2018 Outstanding Community Grand Award from the Georgia Urban Forest Council.

Next time you’re downtown, try to imagine it without a single tree. It would sure look a lot less welcoming, wouldn’t it?
