LIVING ON MAIN STREET • 6 WELCOME WELCOME TO DOWNTOWN TOCCOA DDA Chair, Mr. Clint Sanders As Chairman of the Downtown Development Authority (DDA), I am proud and hon- ored to lead the efforts in continual improvement in quality of life in Downtown Toc- coa. The DDA guides Main Street Toccoa in the implementation of goals set forth by the Toccoa City Commission. Made up of seven downtown businesses and property owners, the DDA works hard to represent the community’s interest downtown. As part of our efforts, we oversee a competitive façade grant program that has con- tributed to the overall beautification efforts downtown. I’m also proud to say that we have been designated a 2018 PlanFirst and 2018 Rural Zone Community, one of the first 9 in the State of Georgia. These programs allow us to provide special tax credits to downtown business and property owners. Downtown Toccoa showcases the charm and hospitality of our beautiful city. Enjoy your visit downtown, and we hope you’ll come back to visit us. WELCOME TO MAIN STREET Main Street Manager, Christian Hamilton When one thinks of “Main Street,” imagery typically includes scenic store- front-lined streets, families walking, unique shops, and more. The hustle and bustle of a city can best be seen in a concentrated Main Street District. Downtown Toccoa is no different. Here at Main Street Toccoa, we focus on continued business recruitment and retention in Downtown Toccoa through a targeted effort focused on design, organization, promotions, and economic development. We are working with the DDA this year to implement several things downtown. These include: • The complete restoration work of the Ritz Theatre balcony, to be concluded by January 2019. STAFF: CHRISTIAN HAMILTON, SHARON CROSBY, CONNIE TABOR, • Installation of Phase II of our Downtown Wayfinding Signage, to be DANITA GAUDETTE, VICKY KING, BRADLEY JORDAN concluded by June 2019. • Continued recruitment of new business for downtown and the pro- motion of existing businesses. BOB HART WWllThe odyssey of a “Battling Buzzard” “Anything worth dying for ... is certainly worth living for.” –Joseph Heller, Catch-22 t was August 15, 1944, D-Day for Dragoon, the Allied invasion of southern France. Fifteen-hundred feet above a drop zone Ishrouded in fog, the wind buffeted Bob Hart’s helmet the instant before he plunged into the unknown at 4:35 a.m. “As soon as you got to the doorway all you saw was white. Most of us figured we were jumping over the Mediterranean. And for a split second all you could think was ‘I got 120 pounds of gear on me. What’s going to happen when I land?’ ” But now he was falling. “A thousand and one,” Hart said to himself as another paratrooper sprang from the doorway of the lumbering C-47. “A thousand and two. “A thousand and…” Hart’s body harness jerked taut reassuringly as the primary parachute billowed. Had he got past “three” he would have yanked the ripcord for the reserve chute bundled on his chest. The business about paratroopers yelling “Geronimo!” was mostly bravado that got old in a hurry after jump school. Paratroopers prepare for a practice jump from a C-47. Bob Hart collection 2 Bob Hart Descending in the eerie whiteness, the 20-year-old machine gunner from Tacoma fleetingly remembered how he and a buddy had signed up for the paratroopers 16 months earlier at Fort Lewis, reasoning they wouldn’t have to do much walking. Fat chance. After Hart landed hard in a farmer’s field in the foothills above the Côte d’Azur, he ended up tramping 50 miles through hostile countryside on an aching foot that turned out to be broken.

SEARCHING FOR PRIVATE GRUWELL By Joe Figueiredo, Volunteer, United States Army Heritage and Education Center (USAHEC) Introduction This is a report of the research methods used in telling the story of Private (Pvt.), Robert R. Gruwell, U.S. Army paratrooper assigned to the 517th Parachute Infantry Regiment (517th PIR). This report emphasizes the holdings of the Military History Institute (MHI), and the Army Heritage Museum (AHM). MHI and the AHM are a part of the United States Army Heritage and Education Center (USAHEC). Admission to the USAHEC is free. In turn, USAHEC is a part of, but located separately from, the United States Army War College at the Carlisle Barracks in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Resources, military, governmental and civilian outside of the USAHEC have also been utilized in telling Pvt. Gruwell’s story. Pvt. Gruwell was a member of the 517th Parachute Infantry Regiment (PIR), which was a part of the 517th Parachute Regimental Combat Team (PRCT). Pvt. Gruwell was Killed in Action on August 15, 1944 during Operation Dragoon, the Invasion of Southern France. He was buried by unknown person(s) in an unknown grave and to this day, his grave has not been found. The tragic story of Pvt. Gruwell is also used as a representative example of the fate of so many American Servicemen killed in all wars. I encountered many twists, turns and dead ends in telling Pvt. Gruwell’s story due to missing and incomplete information, varying reports of the same incident and the fact that since Pvt. Gruwell was a replacement paratrooper in the 517th PIR, he never had time to make lasting friendships.
