It is a company promoting sports and tourism with the aim of expanding the venues for tourists to enjoy the natural environment of Hokkaido through all kinds of outdoor activity such as rafting, Catskiing, cross-country skiing, snowboarding, and rock climbing. In view of the occurrence of several species of Echir.JCOCCUS reported from South Africa by Cameron (1926) and by Ortlepp (1934, 1937), a detailed study was necessary before the specific status of the Kenya material could be determined. -

LO> SCHNER , H.MIX , C.STAUBACH , H.-H.THULKE " F.J.CONRATHS "Institute for Epidemiological Diagnostics and # Institute for Epidemiology, Federal Research Centre for Virus Diseases of Animals, D-16868 Wusterhausen, Germany (Accepted 18 August 1997) SUMMARY Over a period of 40 months, 4374 foxes were randomly sampled from an area located in northwestern Brandenburg, Germany, and examined parasitologically for infections with Echinococcus multilocularis. Spatial analysis of the origin of infected animals identified two (one central and one southeastern) high-endemic foci with an estimated prevalence of 23±8%. By contrast, a prevalence of 4±9% was found in the remaining (low-endemic) area. The prevalences among juvenile and adult foxes were compared in the high-endemic and the low-endemic areas. To analyse the central high-endemic focus further, the random sample was stratified by zones representing concentric circles with a radius of 13 km (zone 1) or xn−"7 km for the remaining three zones from the apparent centre of this focus (anchor point). Prevalences calculated for each zone showed a decrease from zone 1 (18±8%)tozone4(2±4%) with significant differences for all zones but zones 3 and 4. The relative risk of an infection decreased rapidly in a distance range of 26 km around the high-endemic focus, whereas the relative risk remained unchanged within a distance of 5 km around the anchor point. -

Financing Urban Park Management with Private Sector Participation The case of Ueno Park in Tokyo Japan Project Brief Background and Objectives Urban parks can be considered as important social capital not only for the quality of life but also economic productivity in highly built-up cities. They actually bring a variety of social and economic benefits to cities, such as disaster prevention, scenic landscape, recreation spaces, and human interactions. In Japan, “parks” were identified for the first time as “the place people enjoy themselves with others” by a Cabinet decree of 1873, whereby an enormous amount of land from former temples and shrines was taken over and converted into public parks. However, since there were no laws stipulating park management, the designated public spaces were misused and occupied by irrelevant buildings, such as houses, schools, and shops. To improve urban amenity and public welfare, the national government promulgated the Urban Park Act of 1956 that prescribed the standards and regulations for the establishment and management of urban parks, which includes building-to-land ratio of park facilities, regulations on permission for establishment and management of park facilities, and regulations on objects for exclusive use. Following this, the total urban park area has consistently been increasing from 14,388 ha with 4,511 parks in 1960, to 122,839 ha with 105,744 parks in 20161. In the 1990s, the public need for safe, clean and comfortable urban parks increased as an element of safe and livable cities, while problems such as deterioration of park management quality and aging park facilities were pointed out. -
