Devoy 2 Abstract Knowledge transfer in action: a study in the selection and interpretation of themes from history of science scholarship for museum exhibition. Over the past decade, curators and academic historians of science have called for greater inclusion of current scholarship within new exhibitions presented in science museums. Traditionally, such museums in the UK and abroad have presented a technical history of science based on their core collections of industrial machines, scientific instruments and laboratory apparatus. In contrast, historical scholarship over the past thirty years has diverged towards a more social narrative that considers ideas, personae and communities within a general historical context rather than technological and functional detail. In the past five years research councils in the UK have sought to increase the transfer of historical scholarship from academia into popular culture via the museum interface. This thesis specifically considers the knowledge transfer between academic historians of science and curators of science museums. To investigate the challenges of this process, six case studies on the historical literature regarding the nature of trust between scientists were developed into a display. This display was then reviewed by audiences of historians, curators, physics students and adult visitors to the Science Museum, London. 3 From this process of creating and evaluating a museum display based upon recent scholarship, I argue that knowledge transfer exhibitions are welcomed by visitors to museums of science, but a number of challenges currently hinder this process. These challenges include convincing museums to present scholarly displays, increasing historians' awareness of the research opportunities available within museum collections and persuading historians to engage with non-specialist audiences. With adequate financial support and formal recognition from academic funding bodies, I believe that many of these challenges could be lessened. Despite its focus on the history of science community, the studies and conclusions of this thesis are almost certainly of relevance to the issue of knowledge transfer in the wider museum sector. 4 After an overview of the history of the Science Muse- um and its chemistry galleries, four galleries are considered in depth (1906, 1926, 1977, and 1999). The importance of the curators’ external constituency of chemists and chemical educators is emphasized. The Building of the State Science and Engineering with Government on Merrion Street www.ucd.ie/merrionstreet Introduction Although the Government Buildings complex on Merrion Street is one of most important and most widely recognised buildings in Ireland, relatively few are aware of its role in the history of science and technology in the country. At the start of 2011, in preparation for the centenary of the opening of the building, UCD initiated a project seeking to research and record that role. As the work progressed, it became apparent that the story of science and engineering in the building from 1911 to 1989 mirrored in many ways the story of the country over that time, reflecting and supporting national priorities through world wars, the creation of an independent state and the development of a technology sector known and respected throughout the world. All those who worked or studied in the Royal College of Science for Ireland or UCD in Merrion Street – faculty and administrators, students and porters, technicians and librarians – played a part in this story. All those interviewed as part of this project recalled their days in the building with affection and pride.     Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine CHARTER AND STATUTES 2007 Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine CHARTER AND STATUTES Explanatory Note The Charter of Incorporation of the Imperial College of Science and Technology was granted under Letters Patent by HM King Edward VII at Westminster on 8th July 1907. Conditions under which the City and Guilds College (then the Central Technical College of the City and Guilds of London Institute) was to become an integral part of the Imperial College were set forth in a Schedule to the Charter. This Schedule was cancelled by an Order in Council of 19th July 1910, and the original conditions were replaced by those set forth in the Schedule to that Order (commonly known as ‘the Schedule of 1910’). Other Orders in Council which have resulted in additions to, or amendments of, the Charter or the Schedule of 1910 were made on (a) 21st November 1908; (b) 7th July 1916; (c) 6th February 1940; (d) 29th January 1947; (e) 29th June 1951 (which cancelled the Order made in 1916); and (f) 22nd June 1988. The last of these incorporated St Mary’s Hospital Medical School as a constituent College and entitled the College as the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine. The merger with St Mary’s Hospital Medical School was enacted by the Imperial College Act 1988 (chapter xxiv), which came into effect on 1st August 1988. Further mergers were also enacted by (a) the Imperial College Act 1997 (chapter ii), which united the Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School and the Royal Postgraduate Medical School with the College and which came into effect on 1st August 1997; and (b) the Imperial College Act 1999 (chapter iii), which united Wye College with Imperial College and which came into effect on 1st August 2000.
