DRUCKER JOSEPH KESTIN, professor of engineering at Brown University, died on March 16, 1993, of acute leukemia. Founder and first director of the university's Center for Energy Studies, he continued his high level of activity and productivity in research until the very end. Throughout his long and distinguished academic career, in which both experimental and theoretical research played so important a role, Professor Kestin was a superb teacher of undergraduate students. They, along with the host of other readers of his texts on thermodynamics, appreciated greatly his fundamental and challenging approach to the understanding as well as the use of thermodynamic principles. Born on September 18, 1913, in Warsaw, Poland, Professor Kestin received his Dipl. Ing. degree from the Technical University there in 1937 and then began graduate study at Kings College, London. Soon after his return to Warsaw for a visit in late summer 1939, he was sent to a Russian prisoner-of-war camp and was not released to serve with the Allies until 1941. He was then able to resume his graduate studies at Imperial College, London, and completed his doctoral thesis on ''High Speed Flow of Gases Through Channels'' under the direction of Sir Owen Saunders. Following World War II the Polish University College, as a transient arrangement to permit the many expatriate Poles to complete their education, became a unit of the University of Copyright National Academy of Sciences. -

The Image of Chemistry Presented by the Science Museum, London in the Twentieth Century: An International Perspective Peter Morris Abstract: How has chemistry been presented at the Science Museum, London, during the 20 th century? After an overview of the history of the Science Muse- um and its chemistry galleries, four galleries are considered in depth (1906, 1926, 1977, and 1999). The importance of the curators’ external constituency of chemists and chemical educators is emphasized. The image of chemistry at the Science Museum has concentrated on the general utility of chemistry and chemistry as a skilful craft. The presentation has been low-key rather than boosterist. A comparison is made with the chemistry galleries at the Deutsches Museum. Chemistry in the Deutsches Museum has put more emphasis on hands-on exhibits and the chemical industry. Science and technology museums have promoted chemistry in a quiet but successful way for many years, but their influence may have waned along with chemistry kits. Introduction Before we examine the image of chemistry that has been presented by the Science Museum during the 20th century, it is worth asking if science and technology museums have any influence on the public’s perception of chem- istry. While the impact of museums is inevitably less than, say, the mass me- dia, they do attract large audiences: the Science Museum had 1.2 million visi- tors in the 1930s, a peak of 4.2 million visitors in 1980 and 2.6 million visitors in 2004. -

Tribute: Amulya K N Reddy - A Pioneer Takes Leave Cricketer, electrochemist, energy analyst, rural energy practitioner, appropriate technology pioneer, spokesman for sustainable development, campaigner against nuclear energy and weapons, respected teacher and more than anything, a person who has tried to live up to Gandhiji’s talisman. A homage to Amulya K N Reddy, who died on May 7. Sreekumar N & Girish Sant How do you describe Amulya? “Cricketer, electrochemist, energy analyst, rural energy practitioner, appropriate technology pioneer, spokesman for sustainable development, campaigner against nuclear energy and weapons, respected teacher and more than anything, a person who has tried to live up to Gandhiji’s talisman”. This is what we wrote when we prepared a website of his works in October last year, on the occasion of his 75th birthday. Does it complete the description of Amulya K.N. Reddy (Amulya, as he asked many of us to call him), who passed away on May 7 at Bangalore, at the age of 76? Does it explain how his work and writings inspired many researchers and engineers to take up pro-poor development initiatives? Or how in these times when centralised, high investment driven, supply oriented approaches dominate the development debate, Amulya's writings continue to inspire many of us on possible alternatives? It does not, and when we start writing this piece about him, we find it near impossible to capture all aspects of his work and personality. Amulya was born on October 21, 1930 into a well-known family of Bangalore. His first passion was cricket, which he retained for the rest of his life. -

THE MAKING OF AN ENERGY ANALYST: SOME PERSONAL REFLECTIONS Amulya K.N. Reddy International Energy Initiative 25/5 Borebank Road, Benson Town, Bangalore 560046, India [Tel/Fax: +91-80-353 8426 (office) +91-80-334 6234 (home)] [email: [email protected]] Running Head: Making of an Energy Analyst Key words: energy analysis, energy planning, energy consumption patterns, global energy, rural energy, rural technology 1 Introduction (1) I was born in 1930 in the South Indian city of Bangalore, which was then known as a pensioners' paradise and as a garden city with its greenery and parks. Its climate was salubrious and I never saw a ceiling fan until I was in my teens. I used to walk a couple of miles to school through the center of town, without my parents fearing that I would be run over. Today, Bangalore is the IT capital of India, choked with vehicular traffic and highly polluted. Bangalore always had excellent schools and colleges. I did my schooling in a Jesuit institution, St. Joseph's, with the motto: Faith and Toil. There, I was fortunate in having an outstanding and inspiring science teacher, Alec Alvares, who created in me an abiding love of science and the importance of systematic work. The interest in science was strengthened during my late teens by my close friendship with Radhakrishnan and Ramaseshan from the family of Professor Raman, the Nobel Laureate in Physics. I went on to do my B.Sc. (Honors) in Chemistry and M.Sc. in Physical Chemistry in Central College, Bangalore, after which I went to U.K. -

Our facilities, decision making structures and staffing arrangements have been altered so that the Union is best placed to continue to meet the needs of our membership in the most equitable and efficient manner possible. This year we have secured £3.3 million to invest in to the Beit Redevelopment Project and building work is due to start over the coming months. Once this project is complete the student body will have up to date facilities that are fit for the 21st century. We have also successfully executed the task of implementing the governance reforms which were democratically chosen by the student body last year. Three external trustees were recruited last autumn and our new Trustee Board has already provided the organisation with useful perspectives on our finances and refurbishment project that could not be sourced from the otherwise considerable talents of the student body. The past year has also seen the Union embark on a scheme called the Students’ Union Evaluation Initiative which will provide an independent assessment of our effectiveness across all areas. This will in turn identify areas for continuous improvement which will form the basis of the Union’s next strategic review. The Union has been pro-active over the past year not to lose sight of our residual responsibilities to Wye College and the University of London Union (ULU). We have invested a considerable amount of human resource in ensuring that the The Union would not function if it wasn’t for the dedication of remaining students at Wye still have the opportunity through over 1000 volunteer officers and staff.
