ROCZNIKI HUMANISTYCZNE Tom LXVI, zeszyt 11 – 2018 ZESZYT SPECJALNY / SPECIAL ISSUE DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.18290/rh.2018.66.11s-10 GRZEGORZ MAZIARCZYK * TRANSHUMANIST DREAMS AND/AS POSTHUMAN NIGHTMARES IN BLACK MIRROR A b s t r a c t. This paper analyses a TV series Black Mirror in relation to transhumanism, a philo- sophical movement that endorses (bio)technological augmentation as a means whereby mankind will transcend its current biological limitations and reach a new, posthuman stage in its evolution. Taking tendencies observable in contemporary Western societies as the starting point for its de- piction of the near future, Black Mirror gives fictional representation to such transhumanist con- cepts as disembodied, transferable consciousness and enhanced cognition, and suggests that more often than not they may give rise to posthuman dystopia rather than utopia, envisioned by trans- humanism. Key words: transhumanism; posthuman; Black Mirror; utopia; dystopia. The unprecedented pace of on-going digital revolution and other techno- logical changes raises the inevitable question of their impact on the future of mankind. As always happens, humanity’s hopes and fears find their mani- festation on the one hand in relatively abstract philosophical conceptions and on the other in more concrete artistic visions of the future, these two forms of expression constantly influencing each other. The immensely popular TV series Black Mirror is one of the most powerful and thought-provoking ex- plorations of the potential influence of future developments in (bio)technology and media on individual lives and social relations. Taking its cue from the show’s self-reflexive title, the present paper reads Black Mirror as a reflection on—rather than of—the key ideas of transhumanism, the intellectual movement advocating the advent of technologically aug- mented brave new human.

  • This Sunday! Roger Allam, Celia Imrie & Kevin Bishop
PRESS RELEASE 17-10-2017 IMAGES CAN BE DOWNLOADED HERE www.whitherwouldyougo.com / #whitherwouldyougo / @WhitherWould THIS SUNDAY! ROGER ALLAM, CELIA IMRIE & KEVIN BISHOP JOIN ALL-STAR CAST OF – ‘WHITHER WOULD YOU GO?’ - DIRECTED BY JAMIE LLOYD FOR REFUGEES On October 22nd at the Harold Pinter Theatre, a host of stars will gather to perform scenes from Shakespeare’s plays in response to modern-day refugee video stories. The evening will be directed by Jamie Lloyd. All profits go to the UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR. The burgeoning cast includes such luminaries as Roger Allam, Kevin Bishop, Zoe Boyle, Bertie Carvel, Lee Evans, Martin Freeman, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Celia Imrie, Eleanor Matsuura, Wunmi Mosaku, James Norton, Jack Whitehall, Olivia Williams & many more will join together to create a one-night-only, never-to-be-repeated gala event in support of the millions of forcibly displaced people around the world. The evening includes a special guest performance by actor Jay Abdo, himself a refugee of his native Syria. Inspired by Shakespeare’s ‘refugee’ speech from ‘The Book of Sir Thomas More’, written as a plea for tolerance during the London riots of May 1517 (500 years ago this year), ‘Whither Would You Go?’ pairs scenes from Shakespeare, read by stars of stage and screen with genuine refugee stories from around the world. Jamie Lloyd says ‘Whither Would You Go? uses the words of William Shakespeare to highlight our shared humanity. When we focus on what we all have in common, we can start a conversation. With more than 65m forcibly displaced people in the world – the highest levels ever recorded - we should be talking and we should be acting.
