This astonishing pastime took place on the banks of the Ganges at Panihati, which is just north of Calcutta. Lord Caitanya and his associates enjoyed many transcendental pastimes here. Chida-dadhi Mahotsav remembers how the Lord mercifully reciprocated with His devotees by arranging, through Nityananda Prabhu and Raghunatha dasa, to provide an ecstatic feast of yoghurt and chipped rice, along with various other nectar foodstuffs. Linked below is an excerpt from Caitanya-caritamrta, Antya lila chapter 6, which describes this wonderful pastime in detail. http://www.visitmayapur.com/events/panihat-cida-dahi-utsava PANIHATI CIDA DAHI UTSAVA 11 Jun 2014 - 10:00 This festival is explained in detail in Sri Caitanya-caritamrita (Antya-lila, Chapter 6). Srila Raghunatha dasa Gosvami was previously a householder and wanted to join the personal association and service of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu at Jagannatha Puri. However, his father prevented Raghunatha dasa from doing so. After several failed attempts, Raghunatha dasa heard that Lord Nityananda Prabhu had arrived at Panihati. In order to receive the Lord’s causeless mercy, Raghunatha dasa went to take His darsana. When Lord Nityananda saw Raghunatha dasa, He ordered him to prepare and serve all of His associates with chida-dahi, flat rice mixed with yoghurt. In order to please the Lord, Raghunatha dasa immediately carried out His order by preparing and distributing large quantities of chida-dahi to the Vaishnavas as well as hundreds of others who had arrived on the spot upon hearing that a festival was on at Panihati. Finally, Lord Nityananda blessed, and ordered His associates to bless, Raghunatha dasa, that he will be successful in attaining the personal association and service of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Panihati is located near Kolkata. Many devotees from Mayapur and Kolkata assemble and jointly conduct kirtanas and massive prasada distribution to the thousands of pilgrims who arrive for the festival. http://www.iskcondesiretree.net/page/panihati-cida-dahi-utsava The Chida-dadhi Mahotsav, also known as the Chipped Rice Festivalof Panihati , is a yearly celebration of the pastimes of SrilaRaghunatha dasa Goswami… Panihati Chida Dahi Festival Mahotsava - Iskcon Bangalore www. iskcon bangalore.org/ panihati Panihati , located in the Indian State of West Bengal, is a place of religious importance for the ISKCON community. Panihati has a great and a different ... Panihati is a place located in the state of West Bengal, on the banks of Ganges (10 miles north of Calcutta). It was one of the leading trade centers in earlier days when the river route was the main means of communication. A special rice variety called Peneti was imported at this place from Jessore in East Bengal. Probably the name Panihati might have been derived from this trade connection. Once upon a time this place was the center of worship of the Buddhist Tantrics and the Kapalikas. But later, in the sixteenth century, when Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu appeared to propagate the Sankirtana Movement , Panihati became a major center of the Gaudiya Vaishnavas. The residential quarters of Sri Raghava Pandita (one of the associates of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu) still exists in Panihati. The Festival of Punishment The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Sri Krishna , appeared as Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu at Sridhama Mayapura (a quarter in the city of Navadvipa) in Bengal, in the year 1486 AD. The purpose of His incarnation was to establish the Yuga-dharma – the congregational chanting the holy names of the Lord. Lord Balarama appeared as Nityananda Prabhu , and many other eternal associates of the Lord appeared at that time to join the mission of the Lord. Srila Raghunatha Dasa Goswami was one of them. Srila Raghunatha Dasa Goswami was a devotee of the highest order. He displayed a spirit of renunciation and detachment from the material world at a very early age. He wanted to leave home and join Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in His mission. But Chaitanya Mahaprabhu asked him not to do so and assured that Krishna would deliver him soon from the clutches of maya. Two years later, Nityananda Prabhu came to Panihati and stayed there. Raghunatha dasa, who was staying in the nearby village of Srikrishnapura took permission from his father Govardhan Mazumdar and went to Panihati to meet Nityananda Prabhu. At Panihati, he saw Nityananda Prabhu sitting on a rock under a banyan tree on the bank of the Ganges. He was surrounded by many devotees. Raghunatha dasa was hesitant to approach the Lord and paid obeisances from a distance. But some of the devotees noticed him and informed Nityananda Prabhu. Nityananda Prabhu called Raghunatha dasa and said “Raghunatha dasa! You are hiding like a thief. Now I have caught hold of you. Come here. I shall punish you today.’’ Then Lord Nityananda forcibly caught him and put His lotus feet on Raghunatha’s head. He ordered Raghunatha to celebrate a big festival and serve all the devotees - yogurt and chipped rice. Raghunatha dasa immediately sent his men to the nearby villages to purchase all kinds of eatables. They brought chipped rice, milk, yogurt, sweetmeats, bananas, sugar and other eatables. The chipped rice was soaked in milk. Half of that was then mixed with yogurt, sugar and bananas. The remaining half was mixed with condensed milk and flavored with clarified butter and camphor. All the devotees received two earthen pots, one with chipped rice mixed with yogurt and another with chipped rice mixed with condensed milk. The Chida-dahi Mahotsava is celebrated every year in commemoration of this wonderful pastime. This festival is also known as Danda Mahotsava (the Festival of Punishment) It is celebrated on the thirteenth day of the bright moon in the month of Jyeshta (May-June). To this day, pilgrims visit Panihati to celebrate the Chida-dahi Festival. Celebrations at ISKCON Bangalore ISKCON Bangalore celebrates this festival every year with grand abhisheka for Thier Lordships Nitai Gauranga, followed by a boat festival and distribution of chida-dahi maha- prasadam. Devotees to this day celebrate this festival by performing a bathing ceremony of Sri Gaura Nitai, followed by kirtan and offering of Cida -Dahi along with other food items to Gaura Nitai. Srila Prabhupada named the Atlanta temple New Panihati Dhama in 1975. Perhaps it was because we were blessed to have installed the most magnificent and magnanimous Deities in the universe, Sri Nityananda Prabhu and Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Or maybe, it was because in our humble beginnings, chipped rice and yogurt, the main ingredients in the preparations of the Panihati Festival pots, was a common sight on our plates! Their Lordships Sri Sri Gaura Nitai were first installed in 1973 at the previous temple in Midtown, 23 13th Street.

  • Lines on Stone Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis, Please
Lines On Stone Date: 2007-07-01 Author: Sudarshana devi dasi Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis, Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev. Today I was reading Caitanya Caritamrta Antya Lila, Chapter 6 titled, The meeting of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and Raghunatha dasa Goswami. By the grace of Krishnadas Kaviraj Goswami and His Divine Grace Srila Prabhupada, the nectarean narration of the above meeting just brings the whole scene of Panihati celebrations in front of us. Even in this material world we feel so happy to go out for excursion with friends and eat together. This habit is just a perverted reflection of the transcendental bliss experienced when Lord Krishna along with His community of cow-herd associates enjoy together, eating prasad by the sandy bank of River Yamuna. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu arranged for this whole pastime in order to meet His dear associate Raghunatha das Goswami. The life of Raghunatha das Goswami is exemplary one. Though born in an aristocratic family and possessing a beautiful wife, he was eager to serve the lotus feet of Mahaprabhu always. When he first expressed his desire to renounce worldly pleasures, Mahaprabhu advise him not to take hasty decisions, but to practise renunciation internally and later by Krishna's mercy he would be completely freed from the clutches of family life. He abided by Mahaprabhu's words and few years later by causeless mercy of Krishna, he was able to free himself from family ties. He walked all the way from his hometown to Jagannath Puri, for 12 days, to meet Caitanya Mahaprabhu.

Transcendental Inspiration - Part 4 Date: 2021-07-21 Author: Sudarshana devi dasi Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis, Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva. This is in continuation of the previous offering titled, "Transcendental Inspiration" wherein we were meditating on verse 4.9.4 of Srimad Bhagavatam. In the previous offering we saw how Lord gave transcendental inspiration to Dhruva Maharaj, Srila Prabhupada, Srila Baladev Vidyabhyshana and many devotees who sincerely desire to glorify Him and attempt to serve Him either by speech, writing or through any other service. Today we shall meditate on the glorious life of Srila Krishnadas Kaviraj Goswami - the author of Sri Caitanya Caritamrta. Srila Krishnadas Kaviraj Goswami had been living with his family in Katwa, a small town in the district of Burdwan, in Bengal. He worshiped Radha-Krishna with his family, and once when there was some misunderstanding among his family members about devotional service, he was advised by Nityananda Prabhu in a dream to leave home and go to Vrindavana. Although he was very old, he started out that very night and went to live in Vrindavana. In Vrindavana, he met Sri Raghunatha dasa Gosvami one of the principal disciples of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Sri Raghunatha dasa Goswami was earlier staying in Puri and had the good association of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and his eternal associate Svarup Damodar Goswami and had heard from him about the pastimes of Lord Caitanya in Puri. On the request of Sri Rupa and Sanatana Goswamis, Raghunath das Goswami shared these pastimes with them and Srila Krishnadas Kaviraj Goswami was also fortunate to hear the same from him.

Conversion and Ritualisation: an Analysis of How Westerners Enter the International Society for Krishna Consciousness and Assimilate its Values and Practices A thesis submitted to the University of Wales Trinity Saint David In fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2016 Luc De Backer Acknowledgements I would like to thank all those who have supported me on my way. My gratitude to my supervisor Maya Warrier for her encouragements and five years of continued guidance, and to my second supervisor Bettina Schmidt for her valuable advice. My gratitude also goes to Kenneth Valpey, Matylda Obryk, Nima Gajjar, and Rogier Vrieling for proof reading my chapters and to all ISKCON devotees who have participated in this project. I also offer my special gratitude to Hridaya Chaitanya Dasa, ISKCON GBC Zonal Secretary for Spain, France, and the Benelux, for authorising me to conduct this research and to Yadunandana Swami for his encouragement to take up this scholarly endeavour. 2 Abstract The central aim of my thesis is to examine the processes by which individuals from a Western background enter the International Society for Krishna Consciousnes (ISKCON), a transnational religious movement with its roots in Chaitanya Vaishnavism, a Hindu tradition originating in India. The central argument of my research is that extant models of conversion do not do justice to the process by which individuals enter ISKCON and assimilate its values, beliefs, and practices. This thesis thus critically examines conversion models/theories and seeks to refine our understanding of conversion, especially in relation to groups in which everyday ritual practice plays a central role.

  • The Parampara Institution in Gaudiya Vaisnavism
The Parampara Institution In Gaudiya Vaisnavism –Jagadananda Das – Great philosophers could not reach the end of your glories, oh Lord, even if they should think on them with increasing joy for æonchars. For, in the form of the intelligence within and the teacher without, you destroy all inauspiciousness and reveal the way to attain you.(1) Contents: • ISKCON after the death of Bhaktivedanta • Schismatic tendencies in post-Prabhupada ISKCON • The first ISKCON heresy: rtvikvada or the doctrine of the monitor guru • The origins of the siksa-sampradaya idea • The Gaudiya Math after Bhaktisiddhanta's death • History of the parampara • Initiation in the Bhakti-sandarbha • Conclusions • Notes • Chart I: The guru-parampara of the Gaudiya Math • Chart II: The guru-pranali of Lalitaprasada Thakura Introduction One of the primary areas of concern in scholarly work surrounding new religious movements in the last decade has been that of succession. Since most new religions are centred about charismatic religious leaders, the death of a founder presents his or her followers with a crisis which is crucial for the survival of the sect he or she has created. In the context of those religions which have South Asian origin, the charismastic leader is given particular emphasis as the guru, who is often, as David Miller says, ... at the centre of sacredness. Sacred texts and the worship of deities are secondary matters compared with the centrality of the guru whose interpretations of the texts are often looked upon as more sacred than the texts themselves.(2) In the Indian tradition, great importance is placed on the personal search for a guru; it is the divine mission of a seeker to encounter a knower of the truth.(3) Each individual guru is an institution in himself, whether he establishes one temple or monastery or many, and is obliged at the time of his death to seek some kind of continuity.

Now we shall hear the questions asked by devotees and the answers provided by Prabhuji at the end of the class. Devotee: What are the various metres in which the verses are being sung? We heard that Raghunath dasa Goswami used to sing verses in various tunes. Viraja Prabhuji: Yes. Raghunath das Goswami bhatta Goswami was expert in Srimad Bhagavatam. Even Rupa Goswami and Sanatana Goswami used to sit down and listen when Raghunatha dasa Goswami begins to recite Srimad Bhagavatam. His recitation of Srimad Bhagavatam was unique because he could sing each verse in many different metres. These lyrics and tune, enhance the devotional mood with which we recite the shlokas.
