Paula Hershkowitz 1 ABSTRACT The thesis focuses on the martyr poetry of Prudentius. It argues that we cannot fully understand his verses without contextualising the poet within his physical environment, in particular that of Hispania, his homeland. Although literary sources can provide information about Prudentius and his work, it is only by accessing evidence from the archaeological and visual record when studying his poetry that its purpose can be fully understood. Chapter I serves as an introduction to Prudentius. It examines the information he gives us about himself in his poetry and discusses the historical context and background of his work. Chapter II identifies the audience of Prudentius and proposes a role for him as villa-poet to the elite of Hispania. It questions the extent to which this audience were, during his lifetime, committed to the Christian religion. Chapter III analyses the martyr poems in detail, especially those located in Hispania. By examining the material evidence for martyr worship in the locations mentioned by Prudentius it assesses whether the cult of the martyrs played a significant role in the lives of the Spanish. -

perspektywy kultury / The Mediterranean Sea—The Center of the World or the Periphery? perspectives on culture No. 30 (3/2020) Szymon Tracz http://orcid.org/0000-0001-6540-0118 The Pontificial University of John Paul II in Krakow [email protected] DOI: 10.35765/pk.2020.3003.11 Italian Inspiration for the Painting Decorations by Maciej Jan Meyer from the First Half of the Eighteenth Century in Szembek Chapel at the Cathedral in Frombork ABSTRACT The Bishop of Warmia, Krzysztof Andrzej Jan Szembek from Słupów (1680– 1740), erected a domed reliquary chapel devoted to the Most Holy Savior and St. Theodore the Martyr (Saint Theodore of Amasea) at the cathedral in Frombork, also known as Szembek Chapel. The entire interior of the chapel is covered with frescoes dating from around 1735 by Maciej Jan Meyer (Mat- thias Johann Meyer) from Lidzbark Warmiński. Educated in Italy, the artist made polychrome decorations in the style of illusionistic architectural paint- ing known as quadrature. In the lower part of the chapel stand busts of saints and the entire figure of St. Theodore of Amasea; in the cupola of the dome is the adoration of the Holy Trinity and the Holy Cross by the Mother of God and the Saints. Using the comparative method, I discuss the decoration of the chapel in the context of quadrature painting, which was developing in Italy and then in Central Europe, especially at the end of the 17th and the first half of the 18th centuries. Influential artists who played an important role for Pol- ish quadratura techniques were Andrea Pozzo (1642–1709) and painters who came from Italy or studied painting there, such as Maciej Jan Meyer. -

Chapel Hill 2016 Approved by: James Rives Bart Ehrman Robert Babcock Zlatko Plese Todd Ochoa © 2016 Pablo Alberto Molina ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Pablo Molina: Paul in Rome: A Case Study On the Formation and Transmission of Traditions (Under the direction of James Rives) Paul is arguably the second most important figure in the history of Christianity. Although much has been written about his stay and martyrdom in Rome, the actual circumstances of these events — unless new evidence is uncovered — must remain obscure. In this dissertation I analyze the matter from a fresh perspective by focusing on the formation and transmission of traditions about Paul’s final days. I begin by studying the Neronian persecution of the year 64 CE, i.e. the immediate historical context in which the earliest traditions were formed. In our records, a documentary gap of over thirty years follows the persecution. Yet we may deduce from chance remarks in texts written ca. 95-120 CE that oral traditions of Paul’s death were in circulation during that period. In chapter 2, I develop a quantitative framework for their contextualization. Research has shown that oral traditions, if not committed to writing, fade away after about eighty years. Only two documents written within that crucial time frame have survived: the book of Acts and the Martyrdom of Paul (MPl). -

1.Bitton-Ashkelony,Encounter 5/13/05 12—28 PM Page 30 1 Basil of Caesarea’s and Gregory of Nyssa’s Attitudes toward Pilgrimage When the Lord called the chosen ones to inherit the kingdom of heaven [Matt. 25:34], he did not include the journey to Jerusalem among the good deeds. gregory of nyssa, Letter 2.3 Gregory of Nyssa’s Letter 2, written in the 380s c.e., contains some of the most explicit reservations concerning pilgrimage to Jerusalem ever voiced by a Christian theologian.The importance of Gregory’s position on this issue extends beyond his circle and time, exercising a profound influence on the debate that raged between Catholics and Protestants from the sixteenth cen- tury on over the religious value of pilgrimage.The Letter was first published by Protestants, who used it to reinforce their rejection of pious acts of this sort, whereas Catholics claimed that the document was not authentic. To- day, however, the authenticity of the letter is nowhere contested.1 One might conclude from Gregory’s Letter 2 that the problem surround- ing pilgrimage results from the absence of any New Testament injunction to worship God in a specific place—in contrast to the Old Testament, in which there is an explicit commandment to appear before the Lord by mak- ing pilgrimage to the Temple (Exod. 23:17, 34:23; Deut. 16:16). Khoury Working Copy - NOT For Publication August 2005 THE SACRAMENTS OF HOLY BAPTISM AND CHRISMATION PREPARATIONS: The Analogian is placed near the Baptismal Font. Upon it are placed the Gospel Book, the Icon of the Theophany on a stand, a vessel of Chrism, a small towel (for the Priest's use), several cotton swabs, a small vessel of pure olive oil, a sponge, a bowl of warm water, scissors, the hand cross, a napkin, two candles for the sponsors, a Baptismal cross for the child (brought by the family), and two lighted candles. The censer should be near at hand, and the Font filled with water at a comfortable temperature. Vestments needed are the rasson, stole, and phelon, of white or some other bright color. Before the service the child's clothing should be removed, and the child wrapped in a large towel with the Baptismal garments near at hand. THE SERVICE: (The Priest is vested in rasson and stole. The Deacon, if present, is vested in sticharion and orarion. If no Deacon is present, his parts are said by the Priest, except "Bless, Master!" It is customary that the RECEPTION OF THE CATECHUMEN be performed at the Narthex (vestibule) of the Church. The Priest, godparents, parents, and others who so desire go to the Narthex. The Sponsor holds the child on his/her right arm facing the Priest (East). It should be noted, that since it is accepted practice in the Antiochian Archdiocese that there may be one Orthodox Sponsor and one witness who is not Orthodox, the Orthodox Sponsor must make all responses and hold the child. -

Greg Landels Keeping the Faith Abstract The study of Greek ecclesiastical institutions in Rome from the sixth to eleventh centuries has failed to receive the academic attention that it deserves. The Greek monasteries and churches of Rome numbered among the city’s most prominent and influential religious houses, and yet the evidence and historical study relating to their development and eventual disappearance by the eleventh century is left wanting. Very little work has been done on the connections between the various Greek ecclesiastical foundations of Rome and the importance of their location in the city. Therefore, to address this lacuna, this thesis aims to identify and examine the topographical patterns of Greek ecclesiastical and monastic settlement in Rome from the sixth to eleventh centuries.
