They were presided over by Archbishops who attained Patriarchal status, at Antioch, Jerusalem, and Alexandria. They each contained a vigorous monastic life. The monastic life of Egypt is well known. The succinct wisdom of the Apophthegmata Patrum and the serene, ascetic Life of Antony have become widely read. And since the, work published by Peter Brown, especially the "'Rise and Function of the Holy Man in Late Antiquity'", the way of life of the monks of Syria has been carefully studied. In comparison, the monasteries of Jerusalem have been neglected. This study is devoted to Palestinian monasticism. It has three parts. The first considers the main sources for our knowledge of the monasteries, the Lives of the saints, especially the series of seven Lives by Cyril of Scythopolis. The second part describes the environment in which the monasteries grew and which led to their distinctive characteristics. The third explores the activities and the achievements of the monks themselves. The whole provides a portrait of a society which was fully integrated into the life of the Church and Empire, using the testimony of the men who participated in the events. The title shows one of the distinctive features of these monasteries. The monks were people who withdrew from the secular world of the city but also were conscious of belonging to it. This double vocation is shown most clearly in the contrast between the two best-known monks, Euthymius, who consistently sought the seclusion and silence of the desert, and Sabas, who, although a renowned ascetic, was involved in the life of the Church in Jerusalem to the extent of travelling to the imperial capital on two occasions to represent its interests. I have used the terms 'ascetic' and 'ambassador', with the qualification that this latter task was undertaken for the sake of Christ, to refer to these two aspects of the vocation. It is a theme which appears in several contexts; in the monks' awareness of history (Chapter 3), in the presence of monks in both city and desert environments (Chapters 4, 5, and 6), in their involvement in doctrinal dispute (Chapter 8), as well as in their approach to the monastic life (Chapter 7). Vita Theognii (Life of Theognius) ZKG Zeitschrift für Kirchengeschichte 5 Introduction: Ascetics and Ambassadors DESERT AND EMPIRE In the month of August in the year 377 a child was born to Paul and Dionysia, citizens of Melitene the capital of Roman Armenia. He was given the name Euthymius, derived from the word εὐθυμία, confidence. His parents selected this name because his conception, like that of the prophet Samuel, had taken place in response to prayer and was accompanied by divine visions. The voice in the visions said that the child 'will bear the name of confidence since at his birth he who grants him to you will give confidence to his churches'. 1 Within a few months of the birth of this child the Arian Emperor Valens was killed at the Battle of Adrianople in 378, and was succeeded by Theodosius I ( 379-95). 2 This event brought to an end a period in which the church had suffered several vicissitudes. The Emperor Constantine had died in 337 and had been succeeded by, first, Constantius II ( 337-61) who had encouraged Arianism; then by Julian ( 3613) under whom paganism had undergone a short-lived but powerful revival; then by Valens ( 364-78), another Arian. The new Emperor Theodosius was soon baptized, shared in the eucharistic life of the Church, and sought to promote its welfare. Cyril of Scythopolis begins his literary output with this sigh of relief at the arrival of the Christian Emperor. The coincidence of these two events--the birth of a baby in Armenia and a battle in Thrace--is no chance but is ordained by divine providence.

    HYMNS, HOMILIES AND HERMENEUTICS IN BYZANTIUM Abstracts John Damascene on the Transfiguration of the Lord: Mystical Homiletic Performance and Eschatological Hermeneutics Dr Vassilis Adrahtas (University of New South Wales) John Damascene’s oeuvre is generally seen as scholastic and rationalistic, and thus devoid of mysticism and eschatological fervour. However, this assertion is rather sweeping and does not do justice to the comprehensiveness, complexity and subtlety of John Damascene's theologising. On the basis of his homily On the Transfiguration of the Lord, the present paper will attempt to show that John Damascene did work through established mystical tropes and was indeed driven by an eschatological consciousness. In particular, it will be shown that this specific homily is articulated as a dramatised performance that mystically presents Jesus’ (historical) past in light of the experiencing of his (meta-historical) future. As a result, the homily in question is thoroughly informed by an eschatological hermeneutics, which apart from utilising traditional modes of biblical interpretation ultimately puts forward a mysticism of action and an iconic eschatology of being truly human. THE MARVELOUS LIFE OF PATRIARCH SOPHRONIUS I His Company of Saints, and the Fall of Byzantine Jerusalem by Mother Nectaria McLees aint Sophronius of Jerusalem (c. 560-638, feast-day March 11) stands S among the most intriguing and attractive of Byzantine hierarchs, his eight decades encompassing a wealth of life experience as a highly-trained sophist, traveling ascetic pilgrim, esteemed church writer, and eventually patriarch. The monastic spiritual son and friend of two of the 6th-century’s great Christian luminaries, John Moschus (author of The Spiritual Mead- ow) and St. John the Almsgiver, Patriarch of Alexandria, St. Sophronius’ own spiritual son, St. Maximus the Confessor, would continue his life-long combat with heresy. An author of church services and hagiography, St. Sophronius is best-known as the author of the Life of St. Mary of Egypt, the only saint’s life read aloud as part of an official service in the yearly liturgical cycle of the Orthodox Church. This great hierarch ended his days as Patri- arch of the Holy City of Jerusalem, which, in the absence of higher political or military authority, he surrendered to Muslim conquerors in 638 to avert the destruction of the city and its population after a six-month siege.

Apart from that, his name is fi rmly associated with the foundation of the eponymous city of Constantinople, which was to become a centre of the Eastern Christian civilization. A closer look at the contemporary sources, however, suggests that the fi rst Christian Emperor did not give the newly-founded city of Constantinople priority in his policies and building projects. During his reign, Constantine the Great dis- played extraordinary interest in Jerusalem, leaving Constantinople rather overshadowed. The Byzantine rite, in its shape already largely present in Barberini gr. 336, actually comprises three major liturgical elements: 1) consecration of the altar; 2) consecration of the church building; 3) deposition of relics. Our earliest Byzantine liturgical text clearly conceives of the consecration of the altar and the deposition of the relics/“renovation” (encaenia) as two distinct rites, not merely elements of a single ritual. This feature of the Barberini text raises an important question, namely, which of these major elements did in fact constitute the act of dedicating/ consecrating the church, and what role did the deposition of relics have in the ceremonies of dedication in the early period of Byzantine liturgical history, considering that the deposition of relics Vitalijs Permjakovs became a mandatory element of the dedication rite only after the provisions to that effect were made at the Second council of Nicaea in 787 CE.

This article analyzes the theological political–theological views applied to the Arab–Israeli conflict developed by Geries Khoury, Naim Ateek, and Mitri Raheb—three influential authors and activists in different Christians denominations. Besides opposing Zionism and providing arguments for the boycott of Israel, such conceptualizations go far beyond the conflict, providing theological grounds for the denial of Jewish statehood echoing old anti-Jewish accusations.     Saint Sophronius of Jerusalem SAINT OF THE DAY 11-03-2020 The humble theologian and patriarch Saint Sophronius of Jerusalem (c. 560-638), who had the great merit of denouncing the Monothelite heresy and stood by his flock during the Islamic invasion of the Holy City, was born in Damascus, where early on he showed his talent in his studies. He travelled extensively from his early youth and soon met Giovanni Mosco, a Byzantine writer and monk, who became his great friend and spiritual guide. Around 580 they travelled together to Egypt, where Sophronius led an ascetic life, studied philosophy and began to have serious eye problems, from which he recovered thanks to the intercession of the Alexandrian martyrs Cyrus and John. Out of gratitude he compiled a collection of 70 miracles attributed to the two saints. He became a monk in the monastery of St. Theodosius, not far from Bethlehem, and lived there for some time. He then devoted himself to various missions between Asia Minor and North Africa to combat Monophysitism (the heresy that attributed only divine nature to Jesus) and to teach the correct doctrine on the two natures - human and divine - existing in the one person of Christ, solemnly defined at the Council of Chalcedon in 451. Because of the advance of the Persians into Palestine and Egypt, the saint sought refuge in Rome with John Moschus, who died there some years later, in 619, and asked him to bury his body on Mount Sinai or in the Holy Land. Sophronius thus returned to the East and buried his friend at the monastery of Saint Theodosius, during a historical and religious era that was becoming increasingly intricate.
