Dezember 1868 in Königsberg, † 26. April 1951 in München] zählt neben Max Planck, Albert Einstein und Niels Bohr zu den Begründern der modernen theoretischen Physik. Durch die Ausarbeitung der Bohrschen Atomtheorie, als Lehrbuchautor (Atombau und Spektrallinien, Vorlesungen über theoretische Physik) und durch seine „Schule“ (zu der etwa die Nobelpreisträger Peter Debye, Wolfgang Pauli, Werner Heisenberg und Hans Bethe gehören) sorgte Sommerfeld wie kein anderer für die Verbreitung der modernen Physik.2 Je nach Auswahl könnte Sommerfeld [aber] nicht nur als theoretischer Physiker, sondern auch als Mathematiker, Techniker oder Wissenschaftsjournalist porträtiert werden.3 Als Schüler der Mathematiker Ferdinand von Lindemann, Adolf Hurwitz, David Hilbert und Felix Klein hatte sich Sommerfeld zunächst vor allem der Mathematik zugewandt (seine erste Professur: 1897 - 1900 für Mathematik an der Bergakademie Clausthal). Als Professor an der TH Aachen von 1900 - 1906 gewann er zunehmendes Interesse an der Technik. 1906 erhielt er den seit Jahren verwaisten Lehrstuhl für theoretische Physik in München, an dem er mit wenigen Unterbrechungen noch bis 1940 (und dann wieder ab 19464) unterrichtete. David Hilbert’s contributions to logical theory CURTIS FRANKS 1. A mathematician’s cast of mind Charles Sanders Peirce famously declared that “no two things could be more directly opposite than the cast of mind of the logician and that of the mathematician” (Peirce 1976, p. 595), and one who would take his word for it could only ascribe to David Hilbert that mindset opposed to the thought of his contemporaries, Frege, Gentzen, Godel,¨ Heyting, Łukasiewicz, and Skolem. They were the logicians par excellence of a generation that saw Hilbert seated at the helm of German mathematical research. Of Hilbert’s numerous scientific achievements, not one properly belongs to the domain of logic. In fact several of the great logical discoveries of the 20th century revealed deep errors in Hilbert’s intuitions—exemplifying, one might say, Peirce’s bald generalization. Yet to Peirce’s addendum that “[i]t is almost inconceivable that a man should be great in both ways” (Ibid.), Hilbert stands as perhaps history’s principle counter-example. It is to Hilbert that we owe the fundamental ideas and goals (indeed, even the name) of proof theory, the first systematic development and application of the methods (even if the field would be named only half a century later) of model theory, and the statement of the first definitive problem in recursion theory. And he did more. Beyond giving shape to the various sub-disciplines of modern logic, Hilbert brought them each under the umbrella of mainstream mathematical activity, so that for the first time in history teams of researchers shared a common sense of logic’s open problems, key concepts, and central techniques. -

GEORG CANTOR (March 3, 1845 – January 6, 1918) by HEINZ KLAUS STRICK, Germany There is hardly another mathematician whose reputation among his contemporary colleagues reflected such a wide disparity of opinion: for some, GEORG FERDINAND LUDWIG PHILIPP CANTOR was a corruptor of youth (KRONECKER), while for others, he was an exceptionally gifted mathematical researcher (DAVID HILBERT 1925: Let no one be allowed to drive us from the paradise that CANTOR created for us.) GEORG CANTOR’s father was a successful merchant and stockbroker in St. Petersburg, where he lived with his family, which included six children, in the large German colony until he was forced by ill health to move to the milder climate of Germany. In Russia, GEORG was instructed by private tutors. He then attended secondary schools in Wiesbaden and Darmstadt. After he had completed his schooling with excellent grades, particularly in mathematics, his father acceded to his son’s request to pursue mathematical studies in Zurich. GEORG CANTOR could equally well have chosen a career as a violinist, in which case he would have continued the tradition of his two grandmothers, both of whom were active as respected professional musicians in St. Petersburg. When in 1863 his father died, CANTOR transferred to Berlin, where he attended lectures by KARL WEIERSTRASS, ERNST EDUARD KUMMER, and LEOPOLD KRONECKER. On completing his doctorate in 1867 with a dissertation on a topic in number theory, CANTOR did not obtain a permanent academic position. He taught for a while at a girls’ school and at an institution for training teachers, all the while working on his habilitation thesis, which led to a teaching position at the university in Halle. -

INTRO Welcome to Biographies in Mathematics brought to you from the campus of the University of Texas El Paso by students in my history of math class. My name is Tuesday Johnson and I'll be your host on this tour of time and place to meet the people behind the math. EPISODE 1: EMMY NOETHER There were two women I first learned of when I started college in the fall of 1990: Hypatia of Alexandria and Emmy Noether. While Hypatia will be the topic of another episode, it was never a question that I would have Amalie Emmy Noether as my first topic of this podcast. Emmy was born in Erlangen, Germany, on March 23, 1882 to Max and Ida Noether. Her father Max came from a family of wholesale hardware dealers, a business his grandfather started in Bruchsal (brushal) in the early 1800s, and became known as a great mathematician studying algebraic geometry. Max was a professor of mathematics at the University of Erlangen as well as the Mathematics Institute in Erlangen (MIE). Her mother, Ida, was from the wealthy Kaufmann family of Cologne. Both of Emmy’s parents were Jewish, therefore, she too was Jewish. (Judiasm being passed down a matrilineal line.) Though Noether is not a traditional Jewish name, as I am told, it was taken by Elias Samuel, Max’s paternal grandfather when in 1809 the State of Baden made the Tolerance Edict, which required Jews to adopt Germanic names. Emmy was the oldest of four children and one of only two who survived childhood. -

R. OSWALD AND JORN¨ STEUDING The first published proof of key analytic properties of zeta-functions associ- ated with quadratic forms is due to Paul Epstein [2] in 1903 (submitted Janu- ary 1902). The corresponding name “Epstein zeta-functions” was introduced by Edward Charles Titchmarsh in his article [15] from 1934; soon after, this terminol- ogy became common through influential articles of Max Deuring and Carl Ludwig Siegel. While examining Adolf Hurwitz’s mathematical estate at ETH Zurich, how- ever, the authors discovered that Hurwitz could have published these results already during his time in K¨onigsberg (now Kaliningrad) in the late 1880s. Unpublished notes of Hurwitz testify that he was not only aware of the analytic properties of zeta-functions associated with quadratic forms but prepared a fair copy of his notes, probably for submission to a journal. At that time it was very unusual for a woman to seek a university education. In fact, a leading historian of the day wrote that talk of “surrendering our universities to the invasion of women . is a shameful display of moral weakness.”1 At the University of Erlangen, the Academic Senate in 1898 declared that the admission of women students would “overthrow all academic order.”2 In spite of all this, Emmy Noether was able to attend lectures at Erlangen in 1900 and to matriculate there officially in 1904. -
Fundamental Theorems in Mathematics
SOME FUNDAMENTAL THEOREMS IN MATHEMATICS OLIVER KNILL Abstract. An expository hitchhikers guide to some theorems in mathematics. Criteria for the current list of 243 theorems are whether the result can be formulated elegantly, whether it is beautiful or useful and whether it could serve as a guide [6] without leading to panic. The order is not a ranking but ordered along a time-line when things were writ- ten down. Since [556] stated “a mathematical theorem only becomes beautiful if presented as a crown jewel within a context" we try sometimes to give some context. Of course, any such list of theorems is a matter of personal preferences, taste and limitations. The num- ber of theorems is arbitrary, the initial obvious goal was 42 but that number got eventually surpassed as it is hard to stop, once started. As a compensation, there are 42 “tweetable" theorems with included proofs. More comments on the choice of the theorems is included in an epilogue. JOHN VON NEUMANN'S ‘IMPOSSIBILITY PROOF’ IN A HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE ABSTRACT John von Neumann's proof that quantum mechanics is logically incompatible with hidden varibales has been the object of extensive study both by physicists and by historians. The latter have concentrated mainly on the way the proof was interpreted, accepted and rejected between 1932, when it was published, and 1966, when J.S. Bell published the first explicit identification of the mistake it involved. What is proposed in this paper is an investigation into the origins of the proof rather than the aftermath. In the first section, a brief overview of the his personal life and his proof is given to set the scene. There follows a discussion on the merits of using here the historical method employed elsewhere by Andrew Warwick. It will be argued that a study of the origins of von Neumann's proof shows how there is an interaction between the following factors: the broad issues within a specific culture, the learning process of the theoretical physicist concerned, and the conceptual techniques available. In our case, the ‘conceptual technology’ employed by von Neumann is identified as the method of axiomatisation. 1. INTRODUCTION A full biography of John von Neumann is not yet available. Moreover, it seems that there is a lack of extended historical work on the origin of his contributions to quantum mechanics. -

The prominent mathematician Leopold Kronecker (1823 – 1891) is often rel- egated to footnotes and mainly remembered for his strict philosophical position on the foundation of mathematics. He held that only the natural numbers are intuitive, thus the only basis for all mathematical objects. In fact, Kronecker developed a complete school of thought on mathematical foundations and wrote many significant algebraic works, but his enigmatic writing style led to his historical marginalization.
