CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION: IN PRAISE OF BABBITTRY. SORT OF. SPATIAL PRACTICES IN SUBURBIA Kenneth Jackson’s Crabgrass Frontiers, one of the key histories of American suburbia, marshals a fascinating array of evidence from sociology, geography, real estate literature, union membership profiles, the popular press and census information to represent the American suburbs in terms of population density, home-ownership, and residential status. But even as it notes that “nothing over the years has succeeded in gluing this automobile-oriented civilization into any kind of cohesion – save that of individual routine,” Jackson’s comprehensive history under-analyzes one of its four key suburban traits – the journey-to-work.1 It is difficult to account for the paucity of engagements with suburban transportation and everyday experiences like commuting, even in excellent histories like Jackson’s. Glauco Maria Genga INTRAPRENDENTI: PADRE E FIGLIO NEL FILM “LA LUNGA ESTATE CALDA” (1958) 1 L’occasione per riflettere su La lunga estate calda2 è stata l’aver invitato amici e colleghi al cinema, il mese scorso, per festeggiare il mio sessantesimo compleanno. Ho proposto loro questo film a motivo dell’idea centrale che veicola e nonostante il fatto che lo stile in cui fu realizzato nel 1958 (quasi sessanta anni fa) appaia oggi datato. Tratto da tre opere letterarie di William Faulkner,3 il film risulta completamente diverso da esse. L’IDEA CENTRALE… Procediamo con ordine. Il film mette in scena un passaggio generazionale coronato da successo, in cui un giovane non è figlio in senso biologico, ma diventa erede in forza della posizione che sa guadagnarsi, in un contesto familiare e sociale cui egli inizialmente è del tutto estraneo. Un cenno alla trama: «Ben Quick, un giovane con un passato di piromane, trova lavoro in una fattoria, conquistando la fiducia del padrone e, dopo qualche schermaglia, l’amore della figlia. The interior of the studio constructed dress has hand finished details, is lined with ivory soufflé and has boning to the waistline. Jean Louis was the costume designer on the film. Monroe wore this dress when her character, who was proclaimed dead and returns from being stranded on an island for five years, is introduced in the film and reunited with her children who do not realize she is their mother.
