SPATIAL PRACTICES IN SUBURBIA Kenneth Jackson’s Crabgrass Frontiers, one of the key histories of American suburbia, marshals a fascinating array of evidence from sociology, geography, real estate literature, union membership profiles, the popular press and census information to represent the American suburbs in terms of population density, home-ownership, and residential status. But even as it notes that “nothing over the years has succeeded in gluing this automobile-oriented civilization into any kind of cohesion – save that of individual routine,” Jackson’s comprehensive history under-analyzes one of its four key suburban traits – the journey-to-work.1 It is difficult to account for the paucity of engagements with suburban transportation and everyday experiences like commuting, even in excellent histories like Jackson’s.     MANI P ULATING PLAY FRAMES : THE YO MOMMA JOKE CY C LE ON YOU TUBE STEVE ST A N za K Despite their prevalence on school playgrounds, the Internet, and mass media, modern forms of the Dozens have garnered surprisingly little notice from folklorists. This lacuna is particularly unfortunate considering the important role played by folklorists such as Roger Abrahams in bringing this verbal dueling tradition to the attention of the scholarly community. Abrahams’s seminal 1962 study, based on his fieldwork in a Philadelphia ghetto, examined the Dozens as performed in urban African American communities. When “playing the Dozens,” Abrahams tells us, participants direct ritual insults at their opponents’ family, most often their mothers. These insults are often highly stylized, contain sexual or obscene themes, and are sometimes rhymed, as in this Dozen collected by Abrahams: I f----d your mother in a horse and wagon, She said, “‘Scuse me, mister, my p---y’s draggin’”1 (1962, 216). Other Dozens are less stylized and more likely to be recognizable to a modern audience, as in the Dozen below, recorded in the 1960s. Your mother’s so skinny, about that skinny, she can get in a Cheerioat and say, “Hula hoop hula hoop!” (Labov 1972, 133). Although a version of the above Dozen is still told among children today, there are still significant disconnects in both content and performance between the Dozens that were observed by Abrahams and those of contemporary children and adolescents. Little ethnographic or analytical work on the Dozens tradition has been conducted in the past several decades, despite their continuing presence in the social life of children and adolescents.

Burns got into acting in 1996, when she played Peg in the TV series “Out of the Blue.” She went on to guest star in several episodes of “Ally McBeal” and then moved on to play Jessie Owens in “Baywatch.” Burns broke onto the silver screen when she acted opposite Jack Black and Gwyneth Paltrow in “Shallow Hal.” She also played Jan Lambert in “Single White Female 2: The Psycho” alongside Allison Lange and Todd Babcock. Burns also played Kathy Dinkle in “Pepper Dennis” and starred in “Urban Decay.” For two summer seasons in 2002 and 2003, Burns hosted the American version of the “Dog Eat Dog” game show, for which she was nominated for a Teen Choice Award. Burns starred in the ABC comedy “Miss/Guided,” opposite Chris Parnell (“Saturday Night Live”) and Judy Greer. The series was created by Caroline Williams (“The Office”), produced by Ashton Kutcher and helmed by Emmy® Award-winning director Todd Holland (“Malcolm in the Middle”).
