As I drove on scenic Highway 83 south from Interstate 10 over the Empire Mountains and descended into the valley, I was struck by the open space, the beautiful golden grasslands extending between tall, rugged mountains; the lush green vegetation along Cienega Creek; and the general lack of real estate development. At the time, I thought the valley looked like the quintessential landscape for woolly mammoth and Paleoindian peoples. Although I now know that no Paleoindian sites have yet been discovered in the valley, my appreciation of the area has not diminished. The environmental and cultural landscape of Cienega Valley is unique in that it contains some of the best-preserved semidesert grasslands in the American Southwest, perennial water, early evidence of prehis­ toric maize agriculture, and an interesting history of ranching and transportation activities. This issue of Archaeology Southwest highlights some of the character­ istics that have attracted people to the Cienega Valley for the past 10,000 years. It was originally established as a National Park Service Cooperative Park Studies Unit (CPSU) in 1973 with a research staff and ties to The University of Arizona. Transferred to the USGS Biological Resources Division in 1996, the SDFS continues the CPSU mission of providing scientific data (1) to assist U.S. Department of Interior land management agencies within Arizona and (2) to foster cooperation among all parties overseeing sensitive natural and cultural resources in the region. It also is charged with making its data resources and researchers available to the interested public. Seventeen such field stations in California, Arizona, and Nevada carry out WERC’s work. The SDFS provides a multi-disciplinary approach to studies in natural and cultural sciences. Principal cooperators include the School of Renewable Natural Resources and the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at The University of Arizona. Unit scientists also hold faculty or research associate appointments at the university. The Technical Report series distributes information relevant to high priority regional resource management needs. The series presents detailed accounts of study design, methods, results, and applications possibly not accommodated in the formal scientific literature.     CORONADO NATIONAL FOREST FIRE MANAGEMENT PLAN Reviewed and Updated by _/s/ Chris Stetson ___________ Date __5/18/10 __________ Coronado Fire Management Plan Interagency Federal fire policy requires that every area with burnable vegetation must have a Fire Management Plan (FMP). This FMP provides information concerning the fire process for the Coronado National Forest and compiles guidance from existing sources such as but not limited to, the Coronado National Forest Land and Resource Management Plan (LRMP), national policy, and national and regional directives. The potential consequences to firefighter and public safety and welfare, natural and cultural resources, and values to be protected help determine the management response to wildfire. Firefighter and public safety are the first consideration and are always the priority during every response to wildfire. The following chapters discuss broad forest and specific Fire Management Unit (FMU) characteristics and guidance. Chapter 1 introduces the area covered by the FMP, includes a map of the Coronado National Forest, addresses the agencies involved, and states why the forest is developing the FMP. Chapter 2 establishes the link between higher-level planning documents, legislation, and policies and the actions described in FMP. Chapter 3 articulates specific goals, objectives, standards, guidelines, and/or desired future condition(s), as established in the forest’s LRMP, which apply to all the forest’s FMUs and those that are unique to the forest’s individual FMUs. Condition and Trend of Riparian Target Species, Vegetation and Channel Geomorphology Gita Bodner, The Nature Conservancy in Arizona, and Karen Simms, Bureau of Land Management January 2008 Executive summary Las Cienegas National Conservation Area (LCNCA) supports five of the rarest habitat types in the American Southwest: cottonwood-willow riparian forest, cienega marshland, sacaton floodplain, mesquite bosque, and semidesert grassland; is home to 6 endangered species; and has 2 eligible wild and scenic river segments. In response to its exceptional biological, cultural, and scenic values, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has committed to implementing a science-based adaptive management program at Las Cienegas. To this end, the Las Cienegas Resource Management Plan (RMP) sets out numerous clear, measurable management objectives; however, when the RMP was finalized in 2003, it was unclear whether the existing monitoring program could adequately measure progress towards objectives. BLM entered into a cooperative agreement with The Nature Conservancy in 2004 to evaluate the current condition of resources on LCNCA and to review existing monitoring protocols with respect to management objectives. Results are being summarized in a comprehensive “State of the NCA” report, with sections produced during each phase of this project. The first phase addressed adaptive management needs of the upland watershed (see reports on grassland status and trends and on the Biological Planning process, http://www.azconservation.org). This review of riparian habitats and species is part of the project’s second phase focused on stream systems. The second phase also generated a recent report on the endangered Gila topminnow and will soon include a status report on aquatic habitats.

The breezeway between the rooms, sometimes referred to by the Spanish term “zaguan,” provided the only entry into the corral. Hislop’s letter also said that the house had no windows or doors, meaning that there were only window and door open- ings, no furnishing, and that “plaster was needed.” The two men installed window panes, doors and a wooden floor themselves. Although Vail had acquired some carpentering skills while working in the Nevada goldfields, neither of the men was experienced in working with adobe mud or plaster. To accomplish this task they hired two Native American adobe masons. In 1881 Vail returned to New Jersey to marry his longtime sweetheart, Mar- garet Newhall, and bring her back to the Empire Ranch. As a wedding present to his bride, Vail had a half-hexagon bay window built into the north wall of the living room. Rooms were added to the house to accommodate a grow- ing staff and the family that Vail and Margaret planned to raise.
