Port Hedland AREA PLANNING STUDY Foreword Port Hedland is one of the Pilbara’s most historic and colourful towns. The townsite as we know it was established by European settlers in 1896 as a service centre for the pastoral, goldmining and pearling industries, although the area has been home to Aboriginal people for many thousands of years. In the 1960s Port Hedland experienced a major growth period, as a direct result of the emerging iron ore industry.

  • The Mechanic of Birdsville Birdsville Is Famous for Its Race Day
feature >>> KEN NEWTON REPORTS The mechanic of Birdsville Birdsville is famous for its race day. If you saw the Birdsville Race Track between events, you wouldn’t bother taking the lens cap off the camera. It’s a pleasant enough little town, as outback towns go, but step just a few paces in any direction and you are in extreme isolation. This is the Australian outback, on the edge of the Simpson Desert. This is not a tourist destination for amateurs. The famed Birdsville Track is more of a six-lane gibber highway in parts than a track, but the moment you veer away from it, you’re on your own. There’s a big signpost outside the Birdsville police station warning anyone thinking of heading west into the Simpson to check in first, and if you are a foreign tourist, you must phone your embassy. If a rescue is mounted, it can cost anything up to $8,000 or so to drag a crippled vehicle and its occupants out of the desert. The sand tracks which radiate out to the Simpson Desert beyond Birdsville attract the unwary: the blowhard from the city with his fancy four wheel drive who thinks his fifty grand’s worth of technology will get him anywhere. ‘ He’s rescued quite a few vehicles with this machine. If it wasn’t at Birdsville, there’d be a few rusting hulks on the desert landscape.’ Tell that to Peter Barnes, a laconic “seen it all” mechanic, who with his wife Bronwynne runs Birdsville’s first and only garage and repair centre.

  • Submission from Northern Territory Cattlemen's
NORTHERN TERRITORY CATTLEMEN’S ASSOCIATION INC . Advancing and protecting the interests of cattle producers in the Northern Territory M e m b e r - National Farmers’ Federation & Cattle Council of Australia Executive Summary The Covid-19 pandemic has created substantial economic hardship and opportunity for the Northern Territory. The pastoral sector has been largely insulated from the impacts of Covid-19 because of the way the industry is structured. It has, despite increasing regulatory and administrative costs, managed to keep its input costs to a minimum. Low input costs proved the foundation of the resilience which kept the 10,000 people directly and indirectly employed during what is the industry’s peak time. While there are many opportunities and requirements which can assist the Territory rebuild itself, this submission focuses on two immediate opportunities. We have included the NTCA’s overall election policy platform, which may seem outside this scope, but feed into broader debates around accelerated approvals and cumbersome regulation. We also attach some statistical data which reinforces the benefit of the Roads of Strategic Stimulus Importance we wish to see. The Roads of Strategic Stimulus Importance is not just for the benefit of the cattle industry but also the resources (mining and onshore gas) and the tourism sector. These are wealth generating infrastructure suggestions designed to ensure that the productivity of the Territory economy can be dramatically improved. We are seeking a $535 million injection of funds into key roads over a five-year period. This will create 3,000 jobs and unlock the true productivity potential of regional and remote Northern Territory.
