Alt-Nation: Belly @ the Café at the Parlor in Newport Alt-Nation: Belly @ The Café at The Parlor in Newport To kick off their first performances in 20 years, Belly returned to where it all started in Newport performing a few doors down from where their first ever show was staged. These shows at the Café at the Parlor were announced just days before as an intimate show/live rehearsal for Belly’s world tour, which begins on July 15 in Scotland. I caught the second show to give Belly a night to work out the kinks because who has time for amateur hour. It was interesting talking to people who attended both nights because opinions definitely were mixed on which show was strongest. One thing was clear: Belly has successfully tapped into the magical chemistry that made them such a great band. Belly pretty much emptied the cannon for the set list playing for nearly two hours with a set that drew from their two albums, B-sides, and even new material. Their dreamy alterna-pop debut, Star, was represented with cuts like “Slow Dog,” “Low Red Moon” and my personal favorite, the dark rocking “Dusted.” Their more rock ‘n’ roll orientated sophomore effort, King, was represented by “Red,” “Untitled and Unsung” and “Super Connected.” I couldn’t help thinking during the latter of the irony of playing a song with that title when likely half the crowd was on the guest list. Singer/Guitarist Tanya Donelly’s vocals sounder better than ever and the harmonies with the always rockin’ and a head a boppin’ bassist Gail Greenwood were sickly sweet. If the Gorman brothers on guitar and drums had any rust the first night, it didn’t carry over. Although I kind of like the idea of a band reuniting and not playing the hits, well at least till I saw Smashing Pumpkins a few years ago, when Belly played “Gepetto” and “Feed The Tree” it was like stepping into a time warp back to 1996 singing along like none of the last 20 years happened. Nobody got shot, which these days is a success in itself and the new tunes sounded like they could have been written for Star – perfect! There were some kinks and the band had to stop and restart one song, but the spark that made Belly special is still burning bright. I’m sure by the time Belly get to Boston for an August 12 show at the Royale Nightclub they’ll be on cruise control. Email music news to [email protected].

Alt-Nation: Belly is Back, 123 Astronaut, and More Belly — Dove Set your wayback machine to the burgeoning alt-rock era, when in both the pre- and post-Nirvana periods, Aquidneck Island proved a very fertile talent pool. Throwing Muses was formed by Newport songwriters Kristin Hersh and Tanya Donelly in the ‘80s, and saw some success before Donelly left the band to form Belly in ’91. They made RI proud, and were given the full ’90s treatment: “Feed the Tree” from their debut Star on heavy MTV rotation, a nomination for the Best New Artist VMA in 1993, TV show appearances and a Rolling Stone cover. Belly broke up in 1996 after their second album, the less successful King, and Donelly settled into a solo career. Unlike many bands, Belly hasn’t had an overabundance of reunion shows. On Friday, Belly will release the album Dove, their first new music in 23 years. The album was a crowd- sourced effort, funded by donations via the band’s PledgeMusic page, and features the King lineup of Gail Greenwood on bass, Thomas Gorman on guitar and drummer Chris Gorman. Belly – Dove Dove is a carefully produced, purposefully catchy effort, unlike their edgier, more cerebral albums from the ’90s. Dove’s first single, “Shiny One,” is a groovy, Stone Roses-like tune, complete with bongos, and “Artifact” is a twangy number with pedal steel. This effort was a collaborative affair; What’s Up Newport recently reported that many of the songs were pieced together by band members sending snippets of songs to each other from across the country.

  • Holladay Dissertation
ABSTRACT Jesus on the Radio: Theological Reflection and Prophetic Witness of American Popular Music Meredith Anne Holladay, Ph.D. Mentor: Christopher Marsh, Ph.D. The image of God in humanity is the image of the creator, the creative spirit, the imagination, manifest in our ability to understand, appreciate, and reflect on the beauty of God in creation. Therefore, the spirit of imagination, beauty, and creativity is intrinsic to the fullness of a life of faith. Art is a boon to a life of faith; additionally art and creativity allow for and create a space for genuine theological reflection. Arguments made about art in general can be applied to forms of popular culture. The foundation for this project explores the nuances between definitions of “popular culture”, and asserts that popular culture can be and often is meaning-making and identity-forming. The theological significance of popular culture is couched in terms of theological reflection and prophetic witness. The implicit assumption that anything dubbed “Christian” maintains theological depth, and creations lacking that distinction are ‘secular,’ or ‘profane,’ and therefore devoid of any moral good or theological import, is false, and a distinction this project serves in dissolving. The third chapter asserts a strong link between theological and prophetic tasks, one flowing from the other. Genuine theological reflection must result in an outward and public response. Theological reflection connects to the truth of one’s lived experience, and speaks honestly about the human story; out of that experience, voices of prophetic witness speak truth to power, out of and in solidarity with lived experiences.
