INFORMATION La sécurité, une priorité Putting safety first 14 Although Paris is a safe city, the presence of millions of visitors inevitably attracts criminal elements, as in all the major capitals of the world. The Paris police force works closely with the Paris Convention and Visitors Bureau.

A SUPPORTIVE POLICE FORCE Police units specialising in crime prevention train the staff of the “Welcome Ambassadors” kiosks, who are on hand to give tourists information in case of theft, loss of personal effects or accidents and guide them to the help desks in the main police station of each of the 20 arrondissements, open round the clock, seven days a week. www.prefecture-police-paris.interieur.gouv.fr or tel. 08 91 01 22 22.

The police also publish crime prevention advice leaflets in several languages (English, German Spanish, Italian and Japanese) in partnership with the Paris Convention and Visitors Bureau; these are available at all PCVB offices. Two new leaflets warning against street hawkers and card skimmers were published in 2011, and the pamphlet Paris in complete safety is to be reprinted in 2012.

In 2011 an agreement was signed by the Paris Convention and Visitors Bureau, the City of Paris, the Préfecture de Police and the “Victim Assistance Paris” association to publicise and spread awareness of measures in place to help visitors who are victims of crime in the French capital.

The PCVB is also working closely with the office of the Paris chef of police, embassies and tour operators to enhance safety for Asian visitors, who are particularly vulnerable to petty crime.

MULTILINGUAL POLICE OFFICERS 165 Paris police officers speaking 31 languages including English, Chinese, Russian and Greek patrol areas popular with tourists. They wear badges indicating the languages they speak, and are on hand to help with anything from a request for directions to reports of theft or assault.

A WELL-EQUIPPED POLICE FORCE All police stations and mobile units in Paris are equipped with the SAVE (Reception System for Foreign Victims) software. Available in 16 languages, the software allows any police officer to register the complaint of an international visitor and provide a receipt in the visitor’s language to simplify subsequent procedures at the visitor’s embassy in France or after returning home. If a visitor has been physically assaulted, the police officer provides a certificate authorising the victim to be examined by the medical emergency unit of the Hôtel-Dieu Hospital on the Place du Parvis Notre Dame.
