Creating a Superheroine: a Rhetorical Analysis of the X-Men Comic Books
CREATING A SUPERHEROINE: A RHETORICAL ANALYSIS OF THE X-MEN COMIC BOOKS by Tonya R. Powers A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment Of the Requirements for the Degree MASTER OF ARTS Major Subject: Communication West Texas A&M University Canyon, Texas August, 2016 Approved: __________________________________________________________ [Chair, Thesis Committee] [Date] __________________________________________________________ [Member, Thesis Committee] [Date] __________________________________________________________ [Member, Thesis Committee] [Date] ____________________________________________________ [Head, Major Department] [Date] ____________________________________________________ [Dean, Fine Arts and Humanities] [Date] ____________________________________________________ [Dean, Graduate School] [Date] ii ABSTRACT This thesis is a rhetorical analysis of a two-year X-Men comic book publication that features an entirely female cast. This research was conducted using Kenneth Burke’s theory of terministic screens to evaluate how the authors and artists created the comic books. Sonja Foss’s description of cluster criticism is used to determine key terms in the series and how they were contributed to the creation of characters. I also used visual rhetoric to understand how comic book structure and conventions impacted the visual creation of superheroines. The results indicate that while these superheroines are multi- dimensional characters, they are still created within a male standard of what constitutes a hero. The female characters in the series point to an awareness of diversity in the comic book universe. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I wish to thank my thesis committee chair, Dr. Hanson, for being supportive of me within the last year. Your guidance and pushes in the right direction has made the completion of this thesis possible. You make me understand the kind of educator I wish to be. You would always reply to my late-night emails as soon as you could in the morning. -

The reopening is in line with guidance from French government and health authorities and has been discussed with Union Representatives from the Comité Social et Economique (CSE). The focus continues to be on promoting the health and safety of Cast Members and guests, as we welcome guests back to Disneyland Paris. In addition, and subject to the continued evolution of the situation, Disneyland Paris also announced the scheduled phased reopening of several other Disney Hotels including Disney’s Hotel Cheyenne on 20 July, Disney’s Hotel Santa Fe on 3 August and the Disneyland Hotel on 7 September. Disney’s Sequoia Lodge Hotel and Disney’s Davy Crocket Ranch will remain closed during the summer with reopening dates announced at a later time. “All of us at Disneyland Paris are excited to be on the path to reopening over the next few weeks,” said Natacha Rafalski, President of Disneyland Paris. “Making magic means even more, as we reflect on the resilience of our Cast Members and community, the enthusiasm of our guests and fans, and the positive momentum of many reopenings in the tourism industry across Europe. We are looking forward to the return of our Cast Members and reopening our gates for guests to once again enjoy.” “We are thrilled to see one of the main tourism destinations in Europe and largest single site employer in France reopen to guests and its employees,” said Sophie Huberson, Executive Director of Le Syndicat National des Espaces de Loisirs, d'Attractions et Culturels (SNELAC). -

The Sin Unpardonable
ON THE DAY THOR ODINSON LEARNED A LONGKEPT SECRET STOLEN FROM THE WATCHER, HE DROPPED THE MYSTIC HAMMER MJOLNIR TO THE SURFACE OF THE MOON. TRY AS HE MIGHT, THOR COULD NOT LIFT HIS ONCE FAITHFUL WEAPON. UNABLE TO POSSESS THE POWER OF HIS BIRTHRIGHT, THE THUNDER GOD RELINQUISHED THE NAME OF THOR AND NOW SIMPLY CALLS HIMSELF ODINSON. NOW HE SEARCHES FOR REDEMPTION, BUT UNTIL HE FINDS IT, HE WILL REMAIN… RECENTLY, THE ODINSON CROSSED PATHS WITH A BEING KNOWN AS THE UNSEEN, WHO SHARED AN INTIMATE KNOWLEDGE OF ODINSON’S FALL FROM GLORY AND A TALE OF ANOTHER HAMMER HIDDEN ON OLD ASGARD. ODINSON RACED TO THE RUINS OF HIS FORMER HOME, BUT FOUND THE ENTIRE REALM MISSING. IN ITS PLACE WAS HIS FRIEND, BETA RAY BILL. THE REUNION WAS CUT SHORT WHEN THE TWO WERE SET UPON BY MYSTERIOUS WARRIORS. THOUGH THE HEROES FOUGHT VALIANTLY, THEY DID NOT PREVAIL. NOW THE ODINSON IS NOT ONLY UNWORTHY HE IS ALSO THE CAPTIVE OF THE COLLECTOR… MEANWHILE, A MYSTERIOUS FIGURE OFFERS TO BRING AN IMPRISONED THANOS THE OTHER HAMMER. Accommodation
79 Accommodation Apartments, hotels, hostels and camp sites Paris offers a wide range of accommodation, although much of it is not very ‘accessible’. The information available about various aspects of accessibility is generally poor. Several of the places that are quite good (in terms of their physical accessibility) are not well placed to link in with accessible transport. Also, since the early 1990s when the last guide was published, parking in Paris has become more difficult and restrictive, as in many other big cities. If you are planning to use a car or minibus, then the parking facilities at your hotel become an important consideration. It is quite common in Paris for hotels (mainly the less expensive ones) not to have a restaurant, although breakfast is normally provided. The Citadines Apart’hotels and Suitehotels both provide self catering facilities, which may suit some. Choosing where you stay is likely to result from an assessment of location, cost and accessibility (in the broadest sense). Whatever you decide, it will be a compromise. There is a ‘trade-off’ between spending more money in the city centre in less ‘accessible’ accommodation, and maybe being able to walk or wheel to many of the places you want to visit, or staying further out in better accommodation, and travelling in, by whatever means. It might even be worth considering using two or three different hotels to make it easier, overall, to travel around and visit the places you want to get to. There is disruption and wasted time when you move, set against the freedom of being able to get around without the need for taxis or public transport.
