The City and Disasters”. CCCB, 7-11 July 2004 Strolling through the cemetery of Montparnasse in Paris, I fantasize a poker game with an ideal community of the defunct that includes Marguerite Duras, Charles Baudelaire, Delphine Seyrig, and Samuel Beckett. Their modest burial markers rest alongside the ornate aedicules of the proud and powerful, belle époque generals and financiers. Looking around at the densely packed lanes lined with tombs, there seems to be no room left. The necropolis is so crowded that for a moment I have the infantile notion that no one else will be allowed to die. The Montparnasse cemetery is right in the midst of one of the busiest parts of the Left Bank, and to enter is to escape from the tedium of daily life, a place to contemplate the life of the past. In the background rises the immense black, glass-clad tower of Montparnasse, a soaring catacomb for modern offices. Life goes on in the city, overlooking the cemetery, but, as I will try to show, it was never the city itself that was alive. In fact I am often convinced while visiting cemeteries that the only reason the city became a place is because someone died there. René Girard in his theory of the scapegoat suggests that architecture began with stones used to lapidate a victim. «In the end», says Girard, «the tomb is the first and only cultural symbol». -

Page : 1 sur 16 Promenade dans le parc Monceau HISTORIQUE Le parc Monceau est ainsi appelé du nom du village de Monceau situé en périphérie proche de Paris. Ce village existait du temps de Charles Le Chauve. Ce village est simplement entré dans l’histoire à l’époque du duc de Chartres (1747-1793) futur duc d’Orléans 1785, père de Louis-Philippe, et connu aussi sous le titre de Philippe Egalité achète en 1769 la terre de Monceau au lendemain de son mariage avec la princesse de Penthièvre. Il achète le terrain (un hectare) en 1769 à Louis Colignon et lui confie en tant qu’architecte un pavillon octogonal, à deux étages, achevé en 1773. Par la suite furent ajoutées quatre galeries en étoile, qui prolongeaient au rez-de- Le Parc Monceau Page : 2 sur 16 chaussée quatre des pans, mais l'ensemble garda son unité. Colignon dessine aussi un jardin à la française c’est à dire arrangé de façon régulière et géométrique. Puis, entre 1773 et 1779, le prince décida d’en faire construire un autre plus vaste, dans le goût du jour, celui des jardins «anglo-chinois» qui se multipliaient à la fin du XVIIIe siècle dans la région parisienne notamment à Bagatelle, Ermenonville, au Désert de Retz, à Tivoli, et à Versailles. Le duc confie les plans à Louis Carrogis dit Carmontelle (1717-1806). Ce dernier ingénieur, topographe, écrivain, célèbre peintre et surtout portraitiste et organisateur de fêtes, décide d'aménager un jardin d'un genre nouveau, "réunissant en un seul Jardin tous les temps et tous les lieux ", un jardin pittoresque selon sa propre formule. -

Directeur Général d’Idéis Secrétaire Générale 2008 fut à nouveau une belle année, riche de nombreux stages (18), de nouveaux Évelyne DEBROSSE champions au sommet (231) et d’émotions neuves découvertes par ces enfants que la maladie a meurtris et fait douter. Avec désormais 21 hôpitaux partenaires et une organisation opérationnelle qui a su trouver le parfait équilibre entre gestion du collectif et souci de chacun, l’Association a atteint l’un de ses objectifs essentiels : une réelle pérennité. C’est ce qui a permis l’année dernière la création ex-nihilo de cette salle Le Conseil d’Administration d’escalade unique en France, spécialement dédiée aux enfants, même à ceux souffrant d’un handicap ; c’est aussi ce qui donne envie chaque année à d’autres services d’onco- Hugues AUFRAY Artiste, Auteur, Compositeur hématologie pédiatrique de rejoindre la Cordée (bienvenue aux Bordelais !) ; c’est toujours la pérennité qui, mise en perspective, ouvre des horizons inédits aux équipées d’Everest, comme cet extraordinaire projet réunionnais de la « Diagonale des Fous » via Marc CATON les monts et les volcans de l’île, le départ du Vendée Globe ou d’autres destinations Directeur des Collectivités Locales encore à découvrir dans ces pages. -

Carousel Organ , Issue No. 26 — January, 2006 Limonaire Frères Paris, 1839 — 1936* Andrea Stadler “Limonaire” is without any doubt the most famous name in the field of mechanical music. In 1906 it became (accord- ing to “le petit Robert de la langue française,” ed. 1986) a standardized name to be found in French dictionaries, gen- erally as a synonym for a carousel organ. There are several instruments bearing the name Limonaire found in muse- ums or in public or private collections, about which there is technical documentation. On the other hand, we knew almost nothing about “les Frères Limonaire” and the history of the firm, until a German university student, Andrea Stadler, took the time during the preparation of her doctorate, to do extensive research in the archives of the Records Office, commercial and notarial records, and elsewhere. Most of the private documents of the Limonaire family have disappeared. She also had the chance to interview some rare descendants of the family. She has given us the honour to publish in the Carousel Organ , for the first time in English, some parts of the results of her investigation. Philippe Rouillé First part: 1839-1886 The different establishments “Limonaire Frères” When examining the history of the “Limonaire Frères,” one finds that this firm has existed twice under this name in the history of musical instruments. The Bottin , a French commer- cial directory, mentions them from 1839 to 1841 and again from 1887 till 1920. After 1920, the Sociétés succeeding the Limonaire brothers took over a major part of the famous organ builders. -

The Short-term Economic Statistics Expert Group (STESEG) meeting is scheduled to be held at the OECD headquarters at 2, rue André Pascal, Paris 75016, from Monday 28 June to Wednesday 30 June 2004. 2. The meeting will commence at 9.30am on Monday 28 June 2004 and will be held in Room 2 for the first two days and Room 6 on the third day. Registration and identification badges 3. All delegates are requested to register with the OECD Security Section and to obtain ID badges at the Reception Centre, located at 2, rue André Pascal, on the first morning of the meeting. It is advisable to arrive there no later than 9.00am; queues often build up just prior to 9.30am because of the number of meetings which start at that time. Please note you should bring some form of photo identification with you. 4. For identification and security reasons, participants are requested to wear their security badges at all times while inside the OECD complex. Immigration requirements 5. Delegates travelling on European Union member country passports do not require visas to enter France. All other participants should check with the relevant French diplomatic or consular mission on visa requirements. If a visa is required, it is your responsibility to obtain it before travelling to France. Institut de Langue et de Culture Française Spring Semester 2017 Paris, World Arts Capital PE Perrier de La Bâthie / [email protected] Paris, World Capital of Arts and Architecture From the 17th through the 20th centuries Since the reign of Louis XIV until the mid-20th century, Paris had held the role of World Capital of Arts. For three centuries, the City of Light was the place of the most audacious and innovative artistic advances, focusing on itself the attention of the whole world. This survey course offers students a wide panorama on the evolution of arts and architecture in France and more particularly in Paris, from the beginning of the 17th century to nowadays. The streets of the French capital still preserve the tracks of its glorious history through its buildings, its town planning and its great collections of painting, sculpture and decorative arts. As an incubator of modernity, Paris saw the rising of a new epoch governed – for better or worse – by faith in progress and reason. As literature and science, art participated in the transformations of society, being surely its more accurate reflection. Since the French Revolution, art have accompanied political and social changes, opened to the contestation of academic practice, and led to an artistic and architectural avant-garde driven to depict contemporary experience and to develop new representational means. Creators, by their plastic experiments and their creativity, give the definitive boost to a modern aesthetics and new references. After the trauma of both World War and the American economic and cultural new hegemony, appeared a new artistic order, where artists confronted with mass-consumer society, challenging an insane post-war modernity. -

Ando was commissioned to create the gallery within the heritage-listed building by French Bourse de Commerce ***** Tadao Ando businessman François Pinault, who will use the space to host his / Collection Pinault collection of contemporary artworks known as the Pinault Collection. A new 300-seat auditorium and foyer will be set beneath the main gallery. The entire cylinder will be encased by nine-metre-tall concrete walls and will span 30 metres in diameter. Opening soon The Jardin du Palais Royal is a perfect spot to sit, contemplate and picnic between boxed hedges, or shop in the trio of beautiful arcades that frame the garden: the Galerie de Valois (east), Galerie de Montpensier (west) and Galerie Beaujolais (north).
