Summer Attendance Policy

Summer workout is the most important training a gymnast will get during the year. The summer focus is on strength training, mastery of basics and competition readiness for a successful season. Aftershock strives to teach dedication and commitment in a safe environment. We also recognize the importance of family time and the desire for getaways during the hot summer months. We structure summer workouts to maximize training time while still balancing home life by giving gymnasts Friday, Saturday and Sunday off each week (every other week for Optionals). Additionally, team workout will break the following dates:

July 2nd – July 7th (Summer Recess) August 27th-September 1st (Fall Planning Week)

Please make every effort to schedule vacations around these breaks. Gymnasts leaving the gym for three weeks or more (in conjunction or separate from one of the above breaks) will be considered a new team member upon return. You will need to schedule private time with a team coach (at their hourly rate) to test for group placement, and pay the $50 team re-enrollment fee before rejoining the team. Optional level gymnasts have one month to makeup all assignments missed during vacations outside of the above scheduled breaks.

While being present for all workouts is ideal, gymnasts vacationing are strongly encouraged to workout at another facility (ask the office for recommendations) to stay in shape and maintain their spot on our competitive team.

Please contact your coaches as soon as possible to make them aware of any pre-planned absences so they can best assist you in making training arrangements to augment the athlete’s training.

I HAVE READ AND UNDERSTAND THE TENATIVE SUMMER HOURS AND SUMMER ATTENDANCE POLICY FOR 2012.

Compulsory Evaluations

Gymnasts will receive three evaluations to see what level they will be ready to compete at for the 2012-2013 season on the following dates:

Introductory Testing (The Week of March 26)– Gives the gymnast and parents a feel for where they are at based on the following:

- Routine halves and level-required skills - Strength and flexibility strictly appropriate to the level for safety and normal progression - “Level-up” skill/s appropriate for the gymnast’s current level - Bonus points for above-and-beyond skills with no penalty assessed for inability to complete, only additional points awarded for successful and safe completion.

Gymnasts receiving a score of 85% on any individual event should be considered competition ready on that event. Gymnasts are not expected to be passing on each event at this point. Some of the testing criteria may still be new, unfamiliar and/or challenging. This test serves simply as a guideline to see where the gymnast is now at four months out from competition season, and evaluate their progress from here.

nd 2 Compulsory Evaluations: (The Week of April 23) – Gymnasts should understand the compulsory testing, and have shown significant improvements since the first testing. Look for 2-3 passing scores of 85% if the gymnast is on pace to compete successfully at this level. If a gymnast is not passing 2-3 events by this point, or is showing lower than average scores on events, but the gymnast still wants to try to compete at that level, please talk with your event-specific coaches for additional assistance or guidance.

rd 3 Compulsory Evaluations: (The Week of May 21) –Gymnast should have spent significant time in class mastering the skills required for testing, and should now be capable of receiving an 85% or better on each event. As it is time to begin entering gymnasts for the competitive season and begin training full, competition quality routines, this is the cut-off Evaluation to start the competition season on all four events. An 85% must have been attained on all events (on any of the three evaluations) in order to do so. If a gymnast does not receive an 85% on all 5 testing events (Vault, Bars, Beam, Floor Dance & Floor Tumbling), she may choose to compete at their previous level.

- Verifications (Scheduled for the end of the month, each month beginning in June) Verifications are a more casual continuation of the Compulsory Evaluations. Gymnast may begin trying out testing at a higher level if they so desire to be more prepared for next year, or to see where they are at for the next level. If a gymnast is truly exceptional on one event, this is a great chance to test at a higher level to gain self-confidence and avoid “compulsory boredom”. They may choose to see it as a time to practice excelling under pressure at their current level, and strive to improve their scores. This is also an opportunity to take note if there is any slip in evaluation scores, so that the coaches, athletes and parents can catch and address an issue before it becomes a problem.

- Special Note on Injuries or Extended Vacations: If an athlete becomes injured (any injury that severely limits training for or more, or is out of the gym on an extended vacations of three weeks or more), they will be required to verify that they are have regained all events with a passing score of 85% during a verification before they will be allowed to continue competing at their current level. Dropping back to their previous level in the interim will not require retesting, and might be seen as a good “back-up plan”. This is for the safety and confidence of the athletes, and will be strictly enforced. Every effort will be made to refund lost meet entry fees if the gymnast is unable to pass Verification, but this is solely up to the discretion of the host club. Injured gymnasts may qualify to be registered for an upcoming competition as a late entry at an additional fee, but this is at the sole discretion of the host club.

- Makeups: While it is extremely helpful to test all the gymnasts on the same days, we understand that families make plans far in advance. If you will be missing a test, please let your coaches know as soon as you do to schedule a makeup (at the coaches’ private lesson hourly rate). Where possible, please make every effort to have your child in attendance on Evaluation days.

- For Gymnasts Repeating Levels: Those gymnasts who have previously competed a level will be automatically allowed to compete again at that level regardless of scores on the Evaluations. Trying for a promotion to the next level is always exciting for a gymnast, but often times the gymnast is ready to move up levels before they are competition ready. This can cause your children to easily become discouraged. Please join us in helping your children avoid this kind of frustration. Encourage them to see these Evaluations as an opportunity to find out where they are at and as a learning experience, and not as a put down to all the great potential and ability they have inside them.

I HAVE READ AND UNDERSTAND THE COMPULSORY EVALUATION AND PROMOTION PROCESS.
