Laccariopsis is morphologically close to these genera but distinguished by a unique combination of features: a Laccaria-like habit (distant, thick, subdecurrent lamellae), viscid pileus and upper stipe, glabrous stipe with a long pseudorhiza connecting with Ammophila and Juniperus roots and incorporating plant debris and sand particles, pileipellis consisting of a loose ixohymeniderm with slender pileocystidia, large and thin- to thick-walled spores and basidia, thin- to slightly thick-walled hymenial cystidia and caulocystidia, and monomitic stipe tissue. Phylogenetic analyses based on a combined ITS-LSU sequence dataset place Laccariopsis close to Gloiocephala and Rhizomarasmius. Key words — Agaricomycetes, Physalacriaceae, /gloiocephala clade, phylogeny, taxonomy Introduction Hydropus mediterraneus was originally described by Pacioni & Lalli (1985) based on collections from Mediterranean dune ecosystems in Central Italy, Sardinia, and Tunisia. Previous collections were misidentified as Laccaria maritima (Theodor.) Singer ex Huhtinen (Dal Savio 1984) due to their laccarioid habit. The generic attribution to Hydropus Kühner ex Singer by Pacioni & Lalli (1985) was due mainly to the presence of reddish watery droplets on young lamellae and sarcodimitic tissue in the stipe (Corner 1966, Singer 1982).

Coniferous forests of Pakistan are rich in mycodiversity and Suillus species are found as early appearing fungi in the vicinity of conifers. This study reports the diversity of Suillus collected during a period of three (3) years (2008-2011). From 32 basidiomata of Suillus collected, 12 species of this genus were identified. These basidiomata were characterized morphologically, and phylogenetically by amplifying and sequencing the ITS region of rDNA. © 2014 Friends Science Publishers Keywords: Moist temperate forests; PCR; rDNA; Ectomycorrhizae Introduction adequate temperature make the environment suitable for the growth of mushrooms in these forests. Suillus (Suillaceae, Basidiomycota, Boletales ) forms This paper described the diversity of Suillus (Boletes, ectomycorrhizal associations mostly with members of the Fungi) with the help of the anatomical, morphological and Pinaceae and is characterized by having slimy caps, genetic analyses as little knowledge is available from forests glandular dots on the stipe, large pore openings that are in Pakistan. often arranged radially and a partial veil that leaves a ring or tissue hanging from the cap margin (Kuo, 2004). This genus Materials and Methods is mostly distributed in northern temperate locations, although some species have been reported in the southern Sporocarp Collection hemisphere as well (Kirk et al ., 2008).

MycoKeys 60: 45–67. https://doi. org/10.3897/mycokeys.60.38186 Abstract Helvella species are ascomycetous macrofungi with saddle-shaped or cupulate apothecia. They are distri- buted worldwide and play an important ecological role as ectomycorrhizal symbionts. A recent multi-locus phylogenetic study of the genus suggested that the cupulate group of Helvella was in need of comprehen- sive revision. In this study, all the specimens of cupulate Helvella sensu lato with ribbed stipes deposited in HMAS were examined morphologically and molecularly.

  • Chapter 2 Literature Review
CHAPTER 2 LITERATURE REVIEW 2.1. BASIDIOMYCOTA (MACROFUNGI) Representatives of the fungi sensu stricto include four phyla: Ascomycota, Basidiomycota, Chytridiomycota and Zygomycota (McLaughlin et al., 2001; Seifert and Gams, 2001). Chytridiomycota and Zygomycota are described as lower fungi. They are characterized by vegetative mycelium with no septa, complete septa are only found in reproductive structures. Asexual and sexual reproductions are by sporangia and zygospore formation respectively. Ascomycota and Basidiomycota are higher fungi and have a more complex mycelium with elaborate, perforate septa. Members of Ascomycota produce sexual ascospores in sac-shaped cells (asci) while fungi in Basidiomycota produce sexual basidiospores on club-shaped basidia in complex fruit bodies. Anamorphic fungi are anamorphs of Ascomycota and Basidiomycota and usually produce asexual conidia (Nicklin et al., 1999; Kirk et al., 2001). The Basidiomycota contains about 30,000 described species, which is 37% of the described species of true Fungi (Kirk et al., 2001). They have a huge impact on human affairs and ecosystem functioning. Many Basidiomycota obtain nutrition by decaying dead organic matter, including wood and leaf litter. Thus, Basidiomycota play a significant role in the carbon cycle. Unfortunately, Basidiomycota frequently 5 attack the wood in buildings and other structures, which has negative economic consequences for humans. 2.1.1 LIFE CYCLE OF MUSHROOM (BASIDIOMYCOTA) The life cycle of mushroom (Figure 2.1) is beginning at the site of meiosis. The basidium is the cell in which karyogamy (nuclear fusion) and meiosis occur, and on which haploid basidiospores are formed (basidia are not produced by asexual Basidiomycota). Mushroom produce basidia on multicellular fruiting bodies.

  • A Synopsis of the Saddle Fungi (Helvella: Ascomycota) in Europe – Species Delimitation, Taxonomy and Typification
Persoonia 39, 2017: 201–253 ISSN (Online) 1878-9080 www.ingentaconnect.com/content/nhn/pimj RESEARCH ARTICLE https://doi.org/10.3767/persoonia.2017.39.09 A synopsis of the saddle fungi (Helvella: Ascomycota) in Europe – species delimitation, taxonomy and typification I. Skrede1,*, T. Carlsen1, T. Schumacher1 Key words Abstract Helvella is a widespread, speciose genus of large apothecial ascomycetes (Pezizomycete: Pezizales) that are found in terrestrial biomes of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. This study represents a beginning on molecular phylogeny assessing species limits and applying correct names for Helvella species based on type material and specimens in the Pezizales university herbaria (fungaria) of Copenhagen (C), Harvard (FH) and Oslo (O). We use morphology and phylogenetic systematics evidence from four loci – heat shock protein 90 (hsp), translation elongation factor alpha (tef), RNA polymerase II (rpb2) and the nuclear large subunit ribosomal DNA (LSU) – to assess species boundaries in an expanded sample of Helvella specimens from Europe. We combine the morphological and phylogenetic information from 55 Helvella species from Europe with a small sample of Helvella species from other regions of the world. Little intraspecific variation was detected within the species using these molecular markers; hsp and rpb2 markers provided useful barcodes for species delimitation in this genus, while LSU provided more variable resolution among the pertinent species. We discuss typification issues and identify molecular characteristics for 55 European Helvella species, designate neo- and epitypes for 30 species, and describe seven Helvella species new to science, i.e., H. alpicola, H. alpina, H. carnosa, H. danica, H. nannfeldtii, H. pubescens and H.

  • A Preliminary Checklist of Arizona Macrofungi
A PRELIMINARY CHECKLIST OF ARIZONA MACROFUNGI Scott T. Bates School of Life Sciences Arizona State University PO Box 874601 Tempe, AZ 85287-4601 ABSTRACT A checklist of 1290 species of nonlichenized ascomycetaceous, basidiomycetaceous, and zygomycetaceous macrofungi is presented for the state of Arizona. The checklist was compiled from records of Arizona fungi in scientific publications or herbarium databases. Additional records were obtained from a physical search of herbarium specimens in the University of Arizona’s Robert L. Gilbertson Mycological Herbarium and of the author’s personal herbarium. This publication represents the first comprehensive checklist of macrofungi for Arizona. In all probability, the checklist is far from complete as new species await discovery and some of the species listed are in need of taxonomic revision. The data presented here serve as a baseline for future studies related to fungal biodiversity in Arizona and can contribute to state or national inventories of biota. INTRODUCTION Arizona is a state noted for the diversity of its biotic communities (Brown 1994). Boreal forests found at high altitudes, the ‘Sky Islands’ prevalent in the southern parts of the state, and ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa P.& C. Lawson) forests that are widespread in Arizona, all provide rich habitats that sustain numerous species of macrofungi. Even xeric biomes, such as desertscrub and semidesert- grasslands, support a unique mycota, which include rare species such as Itajahya galericulata A. Møller (Long & Stouffer 1943b, Fig. 2c). Although checklists for some groups of fungi present in the state have been published previously (e.g., Gilbertson & Budington 1970, Gilbertson et al. 1974, Gilbertson & Bigelow 1998, Fogel & States 2002), this checklist represents the first comprehensive listing of all macrofungi in the kingdom Eumycota (Fungi) that are known from Arizona.

Sarwar*, A.N. Khalid, M. Hanif & A.R. Both the fruiting body and ectomycorrhizae were characterized morpho-anatomically as well as by molecular analysis. This fungus is a new record for Pakistan and its ectomycorrhizae with Pinus wallichiana are described for the first time by molecular analysis. Key words —boletes, ITS, mantle, PCR, rDNA Introduction Coniferous forests of Pakistan are located at an elevation of 1373 to 3050 m a.s.l. and are characterized by luxuriant growth of trees such as Abies pindrow, Cedrus deodara, Picea smithiana, Pinus roxburghii, P. wallichiana, and Taxus wallichiana. Among these conifers, some deciduous trees and shrubs of different species also occur (Hussain 1995). Another important feature of these forests is the high level of rainfall during summer (July–August). High rainfall and temperature make an environment suitable for the growth of mushrooms. Most of these fungi form mutualistic symbiotic associations with forest trees in the form of ectomycorrhizae that facilitate tree growth through enhanced nutrient absorption and protection of roots from root pathogens (Marx 1991). • Diversity of Macromycetes in the Botanical Garden “Jevremovac” in Belgrade
40 (2): (2016) 249-259 Original Scientific Paper Diversity of macromycetes in the Botanical Garden “Jevremovac” in Belgrade Jelena Vukojević✳, Ibrahim Hadžić, Aleksandar Knežević, Mirjana Stajić, Ivan Milovanović and Jasmina Ćilerdžić Faculty of Biology, University of Belgrade, Takovska 43, 11000 Belgrade, Serbia ABSTRACT: At locations in the outdoor area and in the greenhouse of the Botanical Garden “Jevremovac”, a total of 124 macromycetes species were noted, among which 22 species were recorded for the first time in Serbia. Most of the species belong to the phylum Basidiomycota (113) and only 11 to the phylum Ascomycota. Saprobes are dominant with 81.5%, 45.2% being lignicolous and 36.3% are terricolous. Parasitic species are represented with 13.7% and mycorrhizal species with 4.8%. Inedible species are dominant (70 species), 34 species are edible, five are conditionally edible, eight are poisonous and one is hallucinogenic (Psilocybe cubensis). A significant number of representatives belong to the category of medicinal species. These species have been used for thousands of years in traditional medicine of Far Eastern nations. Current studies confirm and explain knowledge gained by experience and reveal new species which produce biologically active compounds with anti-microbial, antioxidative, genoprotective and anticancer properties. Among species collected in the Botanical Garden “Jevremovac”, those medically significant are: Armillaria mellea, Auricularia auricula.-judae, Laetiporus sulphureus, Pleurotus ostreatus, Schizophyllum commune, Trametes versicolor, Ganoderma applanatum, Flammulina velutipes and Inonotus hispidus. Some of the found species, such as T. versicolor and P. ostreatus, also have the ability to degrade highly toxic phenolic compounds and can be used in ecologically and economically justifiable soil remediation.
