Marx spent his childhood and adolescence in a house so near the Porta Nigra – one of the most famous Roman landmarks in Europe, then a museum housing Roman antiquities – that he could almost touch it from the window.

  • Defensive Structures
Defensive Structures Defensive Structures Bastion (Wikipedia) A bastion is a structure projecting outward from the main enclosure of a fortification, situated in both corners of a straight wall (termed curtain), with the shape of a sharp point, facilitating active defense against assaulting troops. It allows the defenders of the fort to cover adjacent bastions and curtains with defensive fire. The bastion was designed to offer a full range on which to attack oncoming troops. Previous fortifications were of little use within a certain range. The bastion solved this problem. By using cannon to cover the curtain side of the wall, the forward cannon could concentrate on oncoming targets. Types Various types of bastions have been used throughout history. Solid bastions are those that are filled up entirely, and have the ground even with the height of the rampart, without any empty space towards the center. Void or hollow bastions are those that have a rampart, or parapet, only around their flanks and faces, so that a void space is left towards the center. The ground is so low, that if the rampart is taken, no retrenchment can be made in the center, but what will lie under the fire of the besieged. A flat bastion is one built in the middle of a courtain, or enclosed court, when the court is too large to be defended by the bastions at its extremes. The term is also used of bastions built on a right line. A cut bastion is that which has a re-entering angle at the point. It was sometimes also called bastion with a tenaille.

The Limes in southern Germany and Hadrian’s Wall in northern Britain are the most distinctive physical remains of the northern expansion and defense of the Roman Empire. Particularly striking are the size of these monuments today and their uninterrupted courses Ethrough the countryside. The Limes, the largest archaeological monument in Europe, extends 550 km (342 miles) across southern Germany, connecting the Roman frontiers on the middle Rhine and upper Danube Rivers. It runs through farmland, forests, villages, and towns, and up onto the heights of the Taunus and Wetterau hills. Hadrian’s Wall is 117 km (73 miles) long, crossing the northern part of England from the Irish Sea to the North Sea. While portions of Hadrian’s Wall run through urban Newcastle and Carlisle, its central courses traverse open landscapes removed from modern settlements. For a brief period around AD 138–160, Roman forces in Britain established and maintained a boundary far- ther north, the Antonine Wall. The frontier zones, indicated here by oblique hatching, are regions in which intensive interaction took place between the Roman provinces and other European peoples.

  • Experience the Roman History of Regensburg
Experience the Roman History of Regensburg A walkabout through the ruins of “Castra Regina” Info The Construction of the Legionary Fort on the Danube The town‘s history begins in the year 179 CE with the completion of the Roman legionary fort in what today is the Regensburg city center. This monumental, rectangular-shaped fortress on the southern bank of the Danube was the permanent camp of the third Roman legion and offered almost 62 acres (25 hectares) of space to some 6,000 soldiers. Already one hundred years before the legionary fort was founded, a much smaller military camp for an auxiliary regiment had been built on a hill further south in what today is the district of Kumpfmühl. A late antique register of government offices lists Castra Regina, the camp on the Regen, built across the mouth of that river. The legionary camp was apparently named after that tributary of the Danube, known with the ancient European name Reganus. The German name Regens- burg combines the river and the fortress, just like the Latin denomination Castra Regina. Still, Roman milestones dating from 215 CE simply refer to it as “legio” and, hence, call it legion. Indeed, the fortress was then the only location with a legion in the province of Raetia. The legion was composed of heavily armed elite troops that in all likelihood were permanently garrisoned there. Along with numerous auxiliary troops quartered in other fortresses throughout the northern edge of the empire, these Roman legionaries were entrusted with the defense of the province of Raetia. Info 5 4 3 2 1 The Legionary Fort and Its Expansion Twenty miles (30 km) southwest of Regensburg, at the Fort of Abusina, the Danube marked the natural border – the Danubian Limes – of the empire.

Brady 1 Trier: Rom des Nordens Brehan F. Brady Elementary German II Honors May 4, 2020 Brady 2 Trier: Rom Des Nordens Situated on the banks of the Moselle River among the gently rolling hills of western Germany, Trier is a city that is situated at the intersection of history and faith. Today, the city of nearly 111,000 inhabitants draws visitors from around the globe who come to marvel at the diverse civic architecture, much of which are on the UNESCO list of world heritage sites. These structures provide an outward indication of the unique history of this city that traces a line from the modern backwards into antiquity. Many of the buildings are part of the unique connection between this modern metropolitan center and the Roman Empire, a connection that extends beyond the cultural into the ecclesiastical. From its roots as an Imperial city, Trier’s history has become inexorably interwoven into the fabric of the Christian faith. Its unique place within the Roman Empire at the dawn of the Christian age in the 4th century CE has secured its paramount position as that faith has grown and evolved across nearly two millennia of European history. The area in which Trier is located was originally settled by Gallic Celts around the 4th century BCE. Little evidence remains of this original settlement as the Celts, resulting from the impermanent building methods of the tribesmen, although their legacy is preserved in the name of the modern city. Following the Roman conquest of Gaul by Julius Caesar in 52 BCE, the area around the Moselle was incorporated into the empire.
