ÚVOD Předkládaná práce se snaží podat náhled do jedné ze specifických kapitol historie Židů v prvorepublikovém Československu. Komparativní studie dvou levicových sionistických hnutí - Hašomer Hacair a Tchelet Lavan v době první republiky, si klade za cíl poukázat na určité fenomény, které byly typické jak pro vývoj sionismu (respektive socialistického sionismu) v Československu obecně, tak pro vývoj sionistických pionýrských organizací. Zásadní role a význam mládežnických pionýrských organizací byl především v oblasti přístupu a realizaci cílů židovského nacionalismu, v uskutečňování národnostních a sociálních cílů, jak byly formulovány socialistickou sionistickou ideologií. Byla-li tato hnutí skutečně něčím specifická, pak to bylo právě úsilí o praktickou realizaci stanoveného programu (socialistického sionismu), snahou o zajištění dostatečné odborné ideologické přípravy. Šlo o pokus mobilizovat, „produktivizovat“ židovský národ skrz změnu postoje k fyzické práci a prostřednictvím změny duchovních a sociálních hodnot, dle vzoru Borochovy obrácené pyramidy, vytvořit v „Zemi zaslíbené“ prototyp nové židovské národní společnosti.1 Vzhledem ke skutečnosti, že sledovaná sionistická mládežnická hnutí se začala utvářet ještě před vznikem samostatného Československého státu, rozhodla jsem se podat čtenáři určitý nástin vývoje problematiky národa a nacionalismu, obzvláště pak židovského nacionalismu a podmínek, ve kterých se utvářel. V úvodní části práce tedy hodlám postihnout vývoj židovského nacionalismu (respektive sionismu); pozornost bude ovšem zaměřena především na vývoj jeho socialistického směru v kontextu českých zemí. Chtěla bych se dotknout základních cílů a ideálů socialistického sionismu, na jejichž plnění se sledovaná hnutí výrazně podílela. East European Monographs, 1989, str. vi. 6 organizacemi Tchelet Lavan a Hašomer Hacair, hodlám zaměřit především na zkoumání základního ideologického vývoje obou hnutí, na koncepty a vzory, které hnutí přebírala a sledovala. Pokusím se sledovat vývoj obou hnutí a jejich proměny od doby vzniku až po konec 30. let. Spíše než chronologický přehled dějin naznačím hlavní směry myšlenkového a politického vývoje. V komparativní části své práce se hodlám důkladněji zaměřit na některé významné fenomény, které zásadním způsobem utvářely obě hnutí. Ačkoliv se členská základna Tchelet Lavanu a Hašomer Hacairu formovala z diametrálně odlišného prostředí, a to jak nábožensky, sociálně, tak i kulturně, byla tato židovská mládež vedena v duchu velmi podobné ideologické koncepce. V práci se pokusím poukázat nejen na rozlišné historické milieu členské základny, ale i na zásadní milníky, které přivedly sionistické pionýry k určitým strategiím jednání a vytváření koherentního pohledu na svět v jeho totalitě (tj. ideologie). Budu se snažit představit společné pole působení obou mládežnických organizací a další události, které měly zásadní dopad na členskou základnu obou hnutí. 1.1. Glosa o historiografii Mezi zásadní primární prameny, bez kterých by bylo o mnoho obtížnější zabývat se danou problematikou, patří především řada archivních materiálů, které se mi podařilo získat v průběhu studijního pobytu v Izraeli v létě 2009. Patří k nim především archivní materiály a dokumenty z Yad Yaari - the Center for Research and Documentation of HaShomer HaTzair Movement and of the Kibbutz Artzi Federation, umístěného v kibucu Givat Haviva. When I received an invitation from SAA to the final of the World Cup Rugby at Ellis Park, I was really not sure if it was worth travelling 16 hours to see a I 1/2 hour match that I could probably see much better in my own living room!!! Luckily my gut feeling got the better of me, I suppose, and Tm now in the plane on my way home after participating in a "Great Historical" sports event. Only by being there could one really feel the fantastic atmosphere and experience what the New South Africa really means." The excitement could be felt throughout the city with thousands of fans making their way to the ground all dressed up in crazy hats carrying flags of all sizes (only the New South African flag of course!). There were stands on street corners "painting" the new flag on people's faces, and, of course, folks gathered around their traditional "Braaivleis" drinking and smiling. Inside the ground the 70,000 crowd were wildly excited as they greeted the two teams who took to the field. To hear 70,000 people shouting "Nelson, Nelson" as that great man entered what was formerly the bastion and stronghold of white South African supremacy, is a moment never to be forgotten.

[Of course, that includes a 3 hour lay-over in NY]. JANUARY 07, 2006 First Day In Israel Hi from Nazareth! We made it to Israel safely and with almost all of our things. It is great to be here, but we are looking forward to a good night's rest. We left the airport around lunchtime today and spent the afternoon in Caesarea and Megiddo. We had our first taste of Israeli food at lunch in a local restaurant. It was a lot different from our typical American restaurants, but I think we all enjoyed it. Caesarea is a Roman city built on the Mediterranean by Herod a few years before Jesus was born. The city contains a theatre, bathhouse, aqueduct, and palace among other things. The theatre was large and had a beautiful view of the Mediterranean. There was an aqueduct (about 12 miles of which are still in tact) which provided water to the city. The palace, which sits on the edge of the water, was home to Pontius Pilot after Herod s death. We then went to Megiddo, which is a city, much of which was built by King Solomon over 3000 years ago.

    Yechiam Weitz Dialectical versus Unequivocal Israeli Historiography’s Treatment of the Yishuv and Zionist Movement Attitudes toward the Holocaust In November 1994, I helped organize a conference called “Vision and Revision.” Its subject was to be “One Hundred Years of Zionist Histo- riography,”1 but in fact it focused on the stormy debate between Zionists and post-Zionists or Old and New Historians, a theme that pervaded Is- rael’s public and academic discourse at the time. The discussion revolved around a number of topics and issues, such as the birth of the Arab refugee question in the War of Independence and matters concerning the war itself. Another key element of the controversy involved the attitude of the Yishuv (the Jewish community in prestate Israel) and the Zionist move- ment toward the Holocaust. There were several parts to the question: what was the goal of the Yishuv and the Zionist leadership—to save the Jews who were perishing in smoldering Europe or to save Zionism? What was more important to Zionism—to add a new cowshed at Kib- butz ‘Ein Harod and purchase another dunam of land in the Negev or Galilee or the desperate attempt to douse the European inferno with a cup of water? What, in those bleak times, motivated the head of the or- ganized Yishuv, David Ben-Gurion: “Palestinocentrism,” and perhaps even loathing for diaspora Jewry, or the agonizing considerations of a leader in a period of crisis unprecedented in human history? These questions were not confined to World War II and the destruc- tion of European Jewry (1939–45) but extended back to the 1930s and forward to the postwar years.

    Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs The Signatories of the Declaration of the Establishment of the State of Israel The British Mandate over Palestine was due to end on May 15, 1948, some six months after the United Nations had voted to partition Palestine into two states: one for the Jews, the other for the Arabs. While the Jews celebrated the United Nations resolution, feeling that a truncated state was better than none, the Arab countries rejected the plan, and irregular attacks of local Arabs on the Jewish population of the country began immediately after the resolution. In the United Nations, the US and other countries tried to prevent or postpone the establishment of a state, suggesting trusteeship, among other proposals. But by the time the British Mandate was due to end, the United Nations had not yet approved any alternate plan; officially, the partition plan was still "on the books." A dilemma faced the leaders of the yishuv, the Jewish community in Palestine. Should they declare the country's independence upon the withdrawal of the British mandatory administration, despite the threat of an impending attack by Arab states? Or should they wait, perhaps only a month or two, until conditions were more favorable? Under the leadership of David Ben-Gurion, who was to become the first Prime Minister of Israel, theVa'ad Leumi - the representative body of the yishuv under the British mandate - decided to seize the opportunity. At 4:00 PM on Friday, May 14, the national council, which had directed the Jewish community's affairs under the British Mandate, met in the Tel Aviv Museum on Rothschild Boulevard in Tel Aviv.
