Historically a Spanish colony, when the Americans colonized the country in 1898, Anglican missionary work began in the north and among populations in the south. The Church consecrated its first Bishop in 1963 and became an autonomous Province in 1990. Inaugurated on 1 May 1990; there are 6 dioceses. Diocese We give thanks for all who exercise ministry in our churches; may they effectively encourage others to be part of that calling. We pray the Vocations Advisers in the Furness Deanery. Pray for Furness Deanery Synod as we seek to transition the Deanery into an integrated, ecumenical Mission Community; for the development of the Deanery Network Youth Church, and its local cells. God for All: Pray for the NYC work restarting in schools over the autumn term, which will include pastoral and chaplaincy work, assemblies, lunch time clubs, Christian Unions, and Prayer spaces. Pray for the Tues 10th Oct is the ‘All Together Now’ livestream intergenerational conference at Carver Uniting Church, Windermere on Tuesday 10th October. Monday 2 October Anglican Diocese of Southern Virginia, The Episcopal Church, The Rt Communion Revd Herman Hollerith, clergy and people. Anglicanism was brought to the New World by explorers and colonists with the first celebration of the Holy Eucharist in Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607. There was no resident Bishop for nearly two hundred years. In 1784, the Scottish Episcopal Church consecrated the first American Bishop. The Church has 9 Provinces, 98 Dioceses, plus 20 overseas jurisdictions. Out of a population of 284 million, only 2 million are Episcopalians, in 7,095 parishes. Tuesday 3 October Anglican Diocese of Southwark, The Rt Revd Christopher Chessun, Communion Southwark-Croydon, The Rt Revd Johnathan Clark, Southwark- Kingston, The Rt Revd Richard Cheetham, Southwark- Woolwich, The Rt Revd Karowei Dorgu, the clergy and people all in the Province of Canterbury, England. The Diocese is part of the Province of Canterbury, one of two in England, covering the southern half of England. The Diocese of Southwark (Greater London, south of the Thames) was formed in 1905 and has around 359 churches, 292 parishes, with a population of in excess of 2.75 million people. Wednesday 4 October St Francis of Assis (Friar, Deacon 1181-26) The son of a prosperous merchant who dramatically renounced his heritage in order to follow a simple life of poverty and chastity outside the framework of the monastic system. He founded the Friars Minor now the Society of St Francis (SSF), who took literally Christ’s injunction to travel and preach the Gospel without money or baggage. Francis always worked within the framework of the Church and his respect for the priesthood led him to refuse ordination as a priest and he remained a deacon and left the management of his Order to others. He encouraged Clare of Assisi to found a parallel Order for women and started a Third Order for lay people committed to a Rule of Life. The Diocese is part of the Province of York, one of two in England, covering the northern England, including the Isle of Man. The Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham was founded 1884 scoping Nottinghamshire and a few parishes in South Yorkshire. There are 314 Anglican church buildings in the 264 parishes. The Diocese changed its name to The Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham at the end of 2005 to aide understanding of its locality in the UK. Bishop Robert, meetings in Kendal. Thursday 5 October Anglican Diocese of Southwest Florida, The Episcopal Church, The Rt Communion Revd Dabney Smith clergy and people. Friday 6 October William Tynedale Translator, Martyr, 1494-536 A biblical scholar, determined to make a new translation of the Bible into English working directly from the Greek. After being rebuffed by the Bishop of London, he went to Germany to work with Lutheran scholars. His translation of the NT was smuggled into England but publicly burned in 1526. He continued to work on the OT but had, frequently, to evade arrest. In 1535 he was arrested in Antwerp and imprisoned. The following year he was executed. His last words were said to have been: ‘Lord, open the King of England’s eyes’. The beauty of Tyndale’s language later became recognised and much of Cranmer’s Great Bible of 1539 consists of Tyndale’s translations as does much of the Authorised Version of the Bible. Furness For Parish of St Andrew, Coniston; we give thanks for the lay Deanery ministry in the churches and for links with Coniston C of E Controlled School, and for Head Teacher Steve Jackson John Ruskin School. Pray for the redevelopment of the St Andrew's Youth Centre into affordable housing and that this will meet a local need and build bridges into the community. For the parish of St Luke, Torver. Give thanks for the impact of the Bikers Breakfast, and praying for fruit from the Mission Shaped Ministry course and all who support the church in their workplace. God for All: We pray for the continued growth of Mountain Pilgrims as it develops new groups around the county, and particularly for the Freshers’ Fayre at University of Cumbria at the end of the month and follow up film and Supper on Friday 13th October. The clergy and people. The Diocese is part of the Province of Canterbury, one of two in England, covering the southern half of England. Founded 1877, the Diocese covers Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, Luton and North Barnet. This varied area mixes rural and urban and large conurbations like Luton and Watford. There is a population around 2 million with about 400 churches and 350 parishes. Furness The Rev. Monday 9 October Anglican St Asaph, The Church in Wales, The Revd Gregory Cameron, Communion clergy and people. The Church in Wales has been an independent province since its disestablishment and separation from the Church of England in 1920. It is practically coterminous with Wales and is the largest denomination in the country.
