Despite their close economic relationship since 1965, their conflicting historic and political relationships and deep-seated prejudice against each other have continued. The Korean government’s official ban on the direct import of Japanese cultural products existed until 1997, but various kinds of Japanese cultural products, including popular music, found their way into Korea through various legal and illegal routes and influenced contemporary Korean popular culture. Since 1998, under Korea’s Open- Door Policy, legally available Japanese popular cultural products became widely consumed, especially among young Koreans fascinated by Japan’s quintessentially postmodern popular culture, despite lingering resentments towards Japan.

Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Texas at Austin in Partial Fulfillment for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Texas at Austin May 2005 To Harold Ashenfelter and Amul Desai Preface A crowded, red double-decker bus pulls into the depot and comes to a rest amidst swirling dust and smoke. Its passengers slowly alight and begin to disperse into the muggy evening air. I step down from the bus and look left and right, trying to get my bearings. This is only my second day in Bombay and my first to venture out of the old city center and into the Northern suburbs. I approach a small circle of bus drivers and ticket takers, all clad in loose-fitting brown shirts and pants. They point me in the direction of my destination, the JVPD grounds, and I join the ranks of people marching west along a dusty, narrowing road. Before long, we are met by a colorful procession of drummers and dancers honoring the goddess Durga through thundering music and vigorous dance. The procession is met with little more than a few indifferent glances by tired workers walking home after a long day and grueling commute.

This is meant to be a brief introduction to the greater world of musical styles found in cultures around the globe. This is only the smallest sampling of the incredible forms of music that can be found once you leave the comfort of your own playlist! Dive in, explore, and find a style of music that speaks to you in a way might never have heard otherwise! North America Blues https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-KluFB9A8M The Blues is a genre and form of music that started out in the Deep South of the United States sometime around the 1870s. It was created by African Americans from roots in African musical traditions, African American work songs, and spirituals – an oral tradition that imparted Christian values while also describing the terrible hardships of slavery. Early blues often took the form of a loose story or narrative, usually relating to the discrimination and other hardships African Americans faced. The Blues form, which is now found throughout jazz, rhythm and blues, and rock and roll, is characterized by a call-and-response pattern, the blues scales, and specific song structure – of which, the 12-bar blues has become the most common. The Blues is also characterized by its lamenting lyrics, distinctive bass lines, and unique instrumentation. The earliest traditional blues verses used a single line repeated four times. It wouldn’t be until the early part of the 20th century that the most common blues structure currently used became standard: the AAB pattern.

This thesis will explore her performances for Coke Studio Pakistan through the lens of gender theory. I seek to examine Parveen’s blurring of gender, Sufism’s disruptive nature, and how Coke Studio plays into the two. I think through the categories of Islam, Sufism, Pakistan, and their relationship to each other to lead into my analysis on Parveen’s disruption in each category. I argue that Parveen holds a unique position in Pakistan and Sufism that cannot be explained in binary terms. 32 The Role of The Beatles in Popularizing Indian Music and Culture in the West Rodrigo Guerrero Faculty Advisors: Dr. Charles Brewer, Dr. Sarah Eyerly, and Dr. Douglass Seaton College of Music Abstract: The Beatles were responsible for several long-lasting innovations that shaped the history of pop music and Western culture in general. As a British rock band that dominated the popular music scene during the 1960s, they made one of their most significant, yet sometimes overlooked, contributions through the incorporation of elements from Indian culture in their music and lyrics. This essay discusses the role that the Beatles played in introducing and popularizing certain features of Indian culture, and specifically Indian music, in the Western hemisphere. I first describe their relationship with Indian culture. In this section, I bring forth questions, such as why they became interested in this culture, why they decided to go on a spiritual retreat to India, and how the trip influenced their thoughts about foreign culture. After that, this essay analyzes the influence of Indian culture and Indian music on the Beatles’ lyrics and music, respectively. Finally, I will illuminate the lasting effect that this cross- fertilization had in subsequent years. he 1960s was a decade of experimentation in popular music. The Beatles, the British rock band that dominated the popular music scene Tduring this decade, was responsible for long-lasting innovations that would shape the history and style of pop music and Western culture. One of their most significant, yet overlooked, contributions to Western culture was the incorporation of Indian musical elements into their songs.

  • Hindi Film Songs in the Post-Mtv Era: Analyzing the New Lyricism
International Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences (IJHSS) ISSN(P): 2319-393X; ISSN(E): 2319-3948 Vol. 4, Issue 2, Mar 2015, 13-20 © IASET HINDI FILM SONGS IN THE POST-MTV ERA: ANALYZING THE NEW LYRICISM MIHIR BHOLEY Associate Senior, Faculty National Institute of Design PG Campus, Gandhinagar, India ABSTRACT Songs, dance and melodrama are idiosyncratic to Hindi Cinema which has a formidable presence in South Asia. Over the years both Hindi cinema and songs have crossed their native boundary and become a global cultural product. In recent years aggressive marketing of Hindi cinema in Europe and America and their easy access through internet have earned Hindi songs new popularity in the western world too. However, there’s also a perceptible qualitative change in the lyrics over the last few decades. The lyrical, poetic, aesthetic and emotional type songs of yesteryears are being overshadowed by a large number of songs which sound trivial in comparison. This phenomenon may also be a concern of ethnomusicology. Principal objective of this paper is to examine the changes in the lyrical quality of Hindi film music in the post-MTV era through a comparative analysis of the songs over the decades and to explore the change in their lyrical and musical quality. KEYWORDS: Cinema, Ethnomusicology, Lyrics, Music, MTV, Natyasastra INTRODUCTION Summary It’ll be naïve to judge Indian popular cinema without songs. They’ reconsidered essential to the creative genre called cinema in India. Film songs or filmi geet in India are both the creator and product of popular culture.
