ELL Y AMELING Una de las artistas más apreciadas de nuestra época, la soprano holandesa Elly Ameling es considerada hoy en día como la mayor intérprete dellied. Nació en Rotterdam, estudió con varios importantes maestros holandeses e internacionales - Pierre Bernac, entre ellos-, comenzando su carrera cuando ganó el primer premio en el Concurso Internacional de Música de Ginebra, uno de los muchos primeros premios que obtuvo en concursos inter­ nacionales de música vocal. A partir de entonces, Elly Ameling ha actuado en el mundo entero. Extensas tournées anuales como recitalista y con las más importantes orquestas sinfónicas y directores (Er­ nest Ansermet, Cario Maria Giulini, Bernard Haitink, Rafael Kubelik, Seji Ozawa, André Previo, Wolfgang Sawallisch, para nombrar sólo algunos), la han elevado a la categoría de una de las más grandes cantantes de nuestra época. Ha actuado en la mayor parte de los grandes festivales internacionales de música (Edimburgo; South Bank Festival, de Londres; Holanda, Lucerna, Aix, en Provence; Tanglewood y Flandes, una vez más para nombrar sólo algunos). Su repertorio comprende una gran diversidad de estilos y se extiende desde Monteverdi hasta compositores del Siglo XX, tales como Britten, Dallapiccola, Menotti y Poulenc. Ha cantado ópera, particularmente Mozart, y efectuado numerosas presentaciones en radio y televisión. Grabó más de 150 discos que han sido publicados por CBS, ETCETERA, EMI, TELARC. PHILIPS PHONOGRAM, NONESUCH, DECCA, HARMONIA MUNDI, ARGO y E RATO. Con el fin de alentar y perpetuar el gran arte dellied, ha creado el "Premio del Lied Elly Ameling", para ser otorgado anualmente a los mejores cantantes de la especialidad en el Concurso Vocal Internacional de Hertogenbosch, Holanda. Por sus servicios a la música ha sido condecorada por la Reina Juliana de Holanda. También ha recibido un doctorado honorario de la Universidad de British Columbia, de Vancouver, (Canadá). DALTON BALDWIN Nació en New Jersey, Estados Unidos, en 1931. Es uno de los acompañantes más distin­ guidos del mundo en la actualidad. Vive en Francia, donde comparte sus residencias en Pa· rís y la Costa Azul, pero viaja continuamente alrededor del mundo formando dúos con al­ gunos de los grandes cantantes del mundo de hoy. A Colombia ha venido varias veces, y esta es la segunda ocasión, privilegiada de veras, en que nos visita al lado de la ilustre Elly Ameling. Dalton Baldwin ha realizado numerosas grabaciones, tanto de discos como de ál­ bumes~ Entre estos sobresalen dos, hechos para la EMI francesa: uno (cinco discos} con las canciones de Gabriel Fauré, interpretadas por Elly Ameling y Gérard Souzay, y el que con­ tiene la música vocal completa (143 canciones) de Francis Poulenc, álbum en el que partici­ pan los dos cantantes mencionados al lado de otras ilustres figuras de nuestro tiempo. Dalton Baldwin es un artista refinado, cuya enorme musicalidad está puesta al servicio del espíritu de las canciones que acompaña y del estilo interpretativo de algunos entre los más grandes exponentes del arte dellied y la chanson de nuestro tiempo, que lo han elegido co­ mo compañero en salas de concierto y grabación.     Berlioz’s Les nuits d’été - A survey of the discography by Ralph Moore The song cycle Les nuits d'été (Summer Nights) Op. 7 consists of settings by Hector Berlioz of six poems written by his friend Théophile Gautier. Strictly speaking, they do not really constitute a cycle, insofar as they are not linked by any narrative but only loosely connected by their disparate treatment of the themes of love and loss. There is, however, a neat symmetry in their arrangement: two cheerful, optimistic songs looking forward to the future, frame four sombre, introspective songs.     DECCA DISCOGRAPHY >>V VIENNA, Austria, Germany, Hungary, etc. The Vienna Philharmonic was the jewel in Decca’s crown, particularly from 1956 when the engineers adopted the Sofiensaal as their favoured studio. The contract with the orchestra was secured partly by cultivating various chamber ensembles drawn from its membership. Vienna was favoured for symphonic cycles, particularly in the mid-1960s, and for German opera and operetta, including Strausses of all varieties and Solti’s “Ring” (1958-65), as well as Mackerras’s Janá ček (1976-82). Karajan recorded intermittently for Decca with the VPO from 1959-78. But apart from the New Year concerts, resumed in 2008, recording with the VPO ceased in 1998. Outside the capital there were various sessions in Salzburg from 1984-99. Germany was largely left to Decca’s partner Telefunken, though it was so overshadowed by Deutsche Grammophon and EMI Electrola that few of its products were marketed in the UK, with even those soon relegated to a cheap label. It later signed Harnoncourt and eventually became part of the competition, joining Warner Classics in 1990. Decca did venture to Bayreuth in 1951, ’53 and ’55 but wrecking tactics by Walter Legge blocked the release of several recordings for half a century. The Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra’s sessions moved from Geneva to its home town in 1963 and continued there until 1985. The exiled Philharmonia Hungarica recorded in West Germany from 1969-75. There were a few engagements with the Bavarian Radio in Munich from 1977- 82, but the first substantial contract with a German symphony orchestra did not come until 1982.
