It is formed by the Schwarza river, originating in the Northern Calcareous Alps, and the Pitten river, coming from the Lower Austroalpine unit of the Wechsel area. In contrast to the general trend of the rivers in the southern Vienna Basin towards the NNE di- rectly towards with the Danube, the Leitha river makes an abrupt turn towards the East at Götzendorf. At Rohrau the next turn follows towards the SE and the Leitha runs through the gate of Carnuntum onto the little Hungarian Plain. The confluence with the Moson-Danube lies farther to the East at Mosonmagyaróvár. The geometry of paleochannels of the Leitha river was investigated in the river section between the confluence of Pitten and Schwarza (forming the Leitha) near Lanzenkirchen and Bruck/Leitha by paleochannel digitization using infrared and black and white aerial photography. This study is part of an archaeological project investigating patterns of prehistoric settlements in this region. The section of the Lei- tha river between Lanzenkirchen and Bruck/Leitha is especially suitable for the study of dynamic fluvial processes and the comparison between former natural river behav- ior and present regulated riverbed, because of the transition from relatively high to low river slopes in this section. -

Due to a significant drain of purchasing power from the urban core to the periphery new forms of suburban- ization are spreading. Large-scale shopping centres and malls, entertainment complexes, business and industrial parks have led not only to a serious competition between the city centres and the new suburban enterpris- es but also among various suburban communities themselves. The pull of demand for development areas and new transport facilities have caused prices for building land to rise dramatically thus pushing remain- ing agriculture and detached housing still further outside. These processes are discussed generally and by the example of the Graz Metropolitan Area. Abstract During the second half of the 20th century, Austria experienced a fundamental transition of its energy regime. Within few years oil replaced the predominant regime of biomass and coal. This change had not only radical impacts on society's production and consumption patterns but most notably on society's relationship to nature. During the post-war modernisation process, nature and landscapes were dramatically transformed by human biophysical activities. However, with growing impacts, this development was increasingly questioned by parts of society and environmental conflicts emerged. The master thesis assembles Austria's environmental conflicts that took place around the transition's material manifestations dams, power plants, infrastructure projects described through the prism of social ecology. A comprehensive review of literature, newspapers and the internet, supplemented by selected experts and contemporary witness interviews, created an extensive list of 108 environmental conflict cases in Austria after World War II. -

The study was conducted on behalf of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science and Economics and aims at supporting the authorities to fulfil the reporting duties related to the Energy Efficiency Directive 2012/27/EU, Article 14. This article asks for a comprehensive assessment of technical and economic potentials of CHP and district heating on a geographically disaggregated level until the year of 2025 from each member state. The main results of the study comprise this report and an interactive heat map for Austria (see http://www.austrian-heatmap.gv.at) including the following content: - Geographically disaggregated heat densities for space heating and domestic hot water in Austria - Heat demand of the most relevant industrial sites - Technical potentials for district heating, CHP, waste heat, geothermal heat, solar thermal and district cooling - Economic potentials of the technologies mentioned above for regions with high technical district heating potential - Locations of existing district heating grids and heat supply technologies in Austria In the following the major results are presented: Model results suggest that final energy demand for space and water heating in Austria will decline starting from below 100 TWhth in the base year of 2012 to 78 TWhth in year 2025 in a current policy scenario or to around 65 TWhth in an ambitious energy efficiency scenario.
