Finally, I would like to thank my family and friends for their unwavering support: my children, Ilyas and Amber, who have made me the best version of myself and to David for caring so much and being there for me. 2 Abstract The progressively interactive capabilities of new technologies are combining to change the landscape of personal, social and professional lives. Research is growing on the use of technologies to sexually exploit, harass and abuse individuals, with the majority of studies focusing on the experiences of young people. Less is known about the experiences of adult women and the subsequent impact of these events. Addressing this gap in the research is therefore important in responding to and supporting women’s experiences of sexual violence facilitated by the use of technology. The study is from a social constructionist perspective and utilised a qualitative methodological approach in the form of narrative inquiry and thematic analysis to analyse the data and is based upon interviews with five participants who work within sexual violence support services. It explored how participants construct meaning in relation to technology-facilitated sexual violence against women, how they respond to it and how it subsequently impacts victims. The data was then examined using thematic analysis, which identified four primary themes. The findings demonstrate that understanding technology-facilitated sexual violence is a complex process encompassing the context, frequency and type of sexual violence experienced; it involves the sexualisation of women online and understanding online predatory behaviour. Participants report a negative personal and professional impact on victims, ranging from feelings of shame and fear of exposure to being prevented from pursuing professional goals. Service provision is viewed as inconsistent and problematic. This study considers the findings in the context of theories of shame, the embodiment of harm online and the construction of identity in relation to technology. Big Hollywood names like James Franco and Rashida Jones are jumping on the bandwagon, using their influence and resources to invest in a type of audiovisual knowledge production far less mainstream than that in which they usually participate. The films that have resulted from this new movement are undoubtedly persuasive, no matter which side of the debate over pornography these directors have respectively chosen to represent. Moreover, regardless of the side(s) that audience members may have taken in the so-called “feminist porn debates,” one cannot ignore the rhetorical strength of the arguments presented in a wide variety of documentaries about pornography.

The promise of fame, money, and escape from the humdrum of daily life. “It’s a lot of money for a girl, so why not?” Brooklyn states. “It’s a boost of confidence to know that you’re wanted that much.” Raised in a world where a woman’s value is still largely based on appearance, Brooklyn reflects the innocence and insecurity behind these girls’ decisions.

Abstract When Netflix launched in April 1998, Internet video was in its infancy. Eighteen years later, Netflix has developed into the first truly global Internet TV network. Many books have been written about the five broadcast networks – NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox, and the CW – and many about the major cable networks – HBO, CNN, MTV, Nickelodeon, just to name a few – and this is the fitting time to undertake a detailed analysis of how Netflix, as the preeminent Internet TV networks, has come to be. This book, then, combines historical, industrial, and textual analysis to investigate, contextualize, and historicize Netflix's development as an Internet TV network. But the Duke freshman porn star, Miriam Weeks aka Belle Knox,1 leveraged her story to secure a part in an online reality show and a sex toy line, while major news outlets framed her as an advocate for both sex worker rights and the almost inevitable result of rising college tuition on students (Shire 2014). However, the unspoken racial undercurrents of her story have yet to be exam- ined and beg a number of questions: how would a black Belle Knox experience the adult film industry? How would the media frame the experience of a black woman who has sex for money to pay for an elite college education? The work of scholars such as Mirielle Miller-Young (2010) and Patricia Hill Collins (2000) suggest that Knox’s story – being secretly carted to porn sets and becoming a media darling – seems unlikely for a black woman.
