Offspring 2014 #4 Offspring OFFSPRING OFFSPRING December, 2014 The National Newsletter of the SONS and DAUGHTERS of PEARL HARBOR SURVIVORS, INC. “Pearl Harbor ~ December 7, 1941 ~ Lest We Forget” A MESSAGE FROM YOUR NEW NATIONAL PRESIDENT Rick Carraway I am very honored to be elected by the membership to be your new SDPHS National President. We have a great team with Lou Large Vice President, Carol Gladys National Secretary, and Lois Heineken our new National Treasurer. I have had the great pleasure of working with all of them and we are ready to move the SDPHS into the future. The impeccable dedication and accomplishments of Louella Large, our former National President, has inspired myself and the Executive Board Officers to continue improving the SDPHS. I hope everyone was able to observe and participate in our nation's Veterans Day and Pearl Harbor Day Ceremonies. I have recently moved to Navarre, FL. I was honored to ride in the Pensacola Veteran’s Day Parade with my dad, wife, and daughter in a 1929 Ford Model A pickup truck. Three other Pearl Harbor Survivors rode in additional antique cars. The response and surprise of the crowd upon seeing Pearl Harbor Survivors assured me in our mission to make sure they are never forgotten and their stories are told to current and future generations. We all agree we must educate and interest our younger generation on the events of Dec. 7th, 1941. The SDPHS is facing many challenges. Our new Vice President Lou Large will be starting a new nationwide effort to recruit new members and retain our present membership. We want to get back members we have lost and get everyone more involved in their local districts. We are in need of a 4th District Director to represent Arkansas, Louisiana, Missouri and Texas. Many State Chairs are also needed. I will be appointing these positions with the approval of the Executive Board. Please contact me about becoming more involved in the SDPHS. New members and friends of SDPHS have been recruited to help us achieve 501-C3 status with the federal government. This is a top priority allowing donations to SDPHS as a nonprofit, tax exempt organization. We are already planning for our next convention and are considering Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Dec. 7th, 2016 is the 75th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor and we would be excited to participate in this historic event. I soon will be appointing a convention chairman. It will be a huge undertaking to make our next convention affordable and fun for all SDPHS members and guests. My new contact information is published in this Offspring. Please contact me with your ideas and desire to help the SDPHS. Let us move our organization forward together! Louella Large would like to thank each of you who voted for me and continue to give me your support. As the new National Vice President, I will go back to where I was 5 1/2 years ago when I actually had been voted Iin as the National V.P. Membership is so vital to being able to attain our goals and strengthen our treasury so that we can operate as needed. Currently, our only income is from donations from members and our dues. All the resolutions that we voted on in the Ballot Issue passed by majority vote. Lineage members are the same as before but our Associate membership is available to any individual who supports the mission and values of the Sons and Daughters of Pearl Harbor Survivors, Inc. This will enable us to grow immensley and spread the word of the SDPHS. It will also ensure that we will keep the memory of our Pearl Harbor survivors alive. In the coming issues I will be presenting a new membership program of the revised R & R Program (Recruit & Retain). I hope to kick off a nationawide membership campaign on Memorial Day. I need volunteers to assist me. Of course, our District Directors and State Chairs will automatically assist in this, but I also need members who have time to make phone calls & print and send letters, as well as contact local media. We want and need to make sure every person who can read knows about the Sons and Daughters of Pearl Harbor Survivors and our goal to keep the memory of our Pearl Harbor survivors alive by telling their stories. We want to flood the U. S. and we can do this, remember, together we can accomplish great things! We can assure those Pearl Harbor survivors, whom we are blessed to still have with us, that those who died on December 7, 1941 and those who survived that terrible day in history will never be forgotten and their stories will be told in hopes that the U.S. Remembers Pearl Harbor and Keeps America Alert. • The Court Martial That Never Happened
1 The Court Martial That Never Happened An episode from the war experiences of Marshall Parks, MD As transmitted by Ron Fishman, MD Marshall Parks told me much of this story one morning over breakfast at the AAPOS meeting in Montreal in 1991. His daughter Grace and son-in-law Paul Mitchell, MD were also at the table. Marshall knew of my abiding interest in his experiences in World War II and my habit of prompting him every time I could, but this time the story came out spontaneously. I already knew that Marshall had reported to the Navy medical officer deployment office at Pearl Harbor in August of 1944, together with another doctor, to receive their assignments to ships in the Pacific Theater. There were two ships to be manned, one a spanking new destroyer with all the amenities, the other an old four-stacker from pre-World War One days. The two young doctors drew straws to see who would get the new ship and Marshall lost. The other doc was thus assigned to the new USS Johnston, which by mid- October was in the middle of the Battle of Leyte Gulf in the Philippines and was sunk with the loss of almost all hands, including the captain and the medical officer. New general medical officers just out of internship were usually assigned to destroyers, destroyer-minesweepers and similar smaller ships who were often stationed many miles away from the main battle fleet in order to act as radar picket ships and give warning of any approaching Japanese force.
