Offspring OFFSPRING OFFSPRING December, 2014 The National Newsletter of the SONS and DAUGHTERS of PEARL HARBOR SURVIVORS, INC. “Pearl Harbor ~ December 7, 1941 ~ Lest We Forget”

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR NEW NATIONAL PRESIDENT Rick Carraway I am very honored to be elected by the membership to be your new SDPHS National President. We have a great team with Lou Large Vice President, Carol Gladys National Secretary, and Lois Heineken our new National Treasurer. I have had the great pleasure of working with all of them and we are ready to move the SDPHS into the future. The impeccable dedication and accomplishments of Louella Large, our former National President, has inspired myself and the Executive Board Officers to continue improving the SDPHS. I hope everyone was able to observe and participate in our nation's Veterans Day and Pearl Harbor Day Ceremonies. I have recently moved to Navarre, FL. I was honored to ride in the Pensacola Veteran’s Day Parade with my dad, wife, and daughter in a 1929 Ford Model A pickup truck. Three other Pearl Harbor Survivors rode in additional antique cars. The response and surprise of the crowd upon seeing Pearl Harbor Survivors assured me in our mission to make sure they are never forgotten and their stories are told to current and future generations. We all agree we must educate and interest our younger generation on the events of Dec. 7th, 1941. The SDPHS is facing many challenges. Our new Vice President Lou Large will be starting a new nationwide effort to recruit new members and retain our present membership. We want to get back members we have lost and get everyone more involved in their local districts. We are in need of a 4th District Director to represent Arkansas, Louisiana, Missouri and Texas. Many State Chairs are also needed. I will be appointing these positions with the approval of the Executive Board. Please contact me about becoming more involved in the SDPHS. New members and friends of SDPHS have been recruited to help us achieve 501-C3 status with the federal government. This is a top priority allowing donations to SDPHS as a nonprofit, tax exempt organization. We are already planning for our next convention and are considering Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Dec. 7th, 2016 is the 75th anniversary of the and we would be excited to participate in this historic event. I soon will be appointing a convention chairman. It will be a huge undertaking to make our next convention affordable and fun for all SDPHS members and guests. My new contact information is published in this Offspring. Please contact me with your ideas and desire to help the SDPHS. Let us move our organization forward together! Mahalo, Rick

FROM THE NATIONAL VICE PRESIDENT ... Louella Large

would like to thank each of you who voted for me and continue to give me your support. As the new National Vice President, I will go back to where I was 5 1/2 years ago when I actually had been voted Iin as the National V.P. Membership is so vital to being able to attain our goals and strengthen our treasury so that we can operate as needed. Currently, our only income is from donations from members and our dues. All the resolutions that we voted on in the Ballot Issue passed by majority vote. Lineage members are the same as before but our Associate membership is available to any individual who supports the mission and values of the Sons and Daughters of Pearl Harbor Survivors, Inc. This will enable us to grow immensley and spread the word of the SDPHS. It will also ensure that we will keep the memory of our Pearl Harbor survivors alive. In the coming issues I will be presenting a new membership program of the revised R & R Program (Recruit & Retain). I hope to kick off a nationawide membership campaign on Memorial Day. I need volunteers to assist me. Of course, our District Directors and State Chairs will automatically assist in this, but I also need members who have time to make phone calls & print and send letters, as well as contact local media. We want and need to make sure every person who can read knows about the Sons and Daughters of Pearl Harbor Survivors and our goal to keep the memory of our Pearl Harbor survivors alive by telling their stories. We want to flood the U. S. and we can do this, remember, together we can accomplish great things! We can assure those Pearl Harbor survivors, whom we are blessed to still have with us, that those who died on December 7, 1941 and those who survived that terrible day in history will never be forgotten and their stories will be told in hopes that the U.S. Remembers Pearl Harbor and Keeps America Alert.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve you once more. Mahalo, Lou Large

ILLINOIS Lynn Shindel, State Chair Illinois Chapter 1 Chapter 1 SDPHS News July I was part of a group of American Legion Riders from Post 79 in Leroy, Illinois, who did a ride to Dixon to view a memorial to Veterans. While there we saw a tank, Huey Cobra helicopter, artillery gun, military ambulance, F-105 jet airplane, and 16 inch shells from a battleship that lined the walkway. There was a covered area on the walkway with some of the words included in our motto "LEST WE FORGET" on both sides. (see photo on left) There were numerous memorials dedicated from WW2 to Iraq/ Afganistan. In August I helped raise money for the Wounded Warriors Project with American Legion Post 79. We had the Patriot Guard Riders Iraq/ Afganistan wall on display of all military personnel that were killed from Illinois. On October 4, 2014 our chapter had our Fall meeting/lunch in Rochester. Plans for Dec.7, were discussed. Illinois times and places have not been finalized at this time.

Veteran’s Day - Lynn Shindel represented the SDPHS in Downs, Illinois on Veteran’s Day. He was the guest speaker at the TriValley Middle School as well as the TriValley High School. There were approximately 80 Veterans present at the schools. See Photo to the right. 6 7 Offspring December, 2014 Chapter, State, District Reports

California, Chapter 5 by Kathleen Farley, California State Chair Concord - The SDPHS Chapter 5 meeting on August 10 was held in Concord,California and was attended by 7 “Rosie The Riveters”.

Standing L to R: Tammy Brumley (Coordinator for the Rosies) Kathleen Farley (SDPHS California, Chapter 5 President, CA State Chair), Rosie Kay Morrison, Richmond Kaiser Shipyard # 2 Journeyman Welder (1943-1945); Rosie Marian Sousa, Richmond Kaiser Shipyard # 3 Draftsman (1943-1944); Rosie Marian Wynn, Richmond Kaiser Shipyard Pipe Welder (1944-1945). Standing on the right, Rosie Priscilla Elder, Richmond Kaiser Shipyard # 3 Electrician (1943-1945).

Sitting, starting on the left, Rosie Agnes Moore, Kaiser Shipyard # 3, Welder; Rosie Ophelia Hicks, Marin Shipyard Sausalito, Welder; Pearl Harbor Survivor, Henry Fries, USS Detroit, Pearl Harbor Survivor, Earl "Chuck" Kohler, Ford Island, and Rosie Mary Torres, Moore's Shipyard, Oakland Journeyman Welder (1942-1945) Rosie’s Story osie the Riveter is a cultural icon of the United States, representing R the American women who worked in factories during World War II, many of whom produced munitions and war supplies. These women sometimes took entirely new jobs replacing the male workers who were in the military. Rosie the Riveter is commonly used as a symbol of feminism and women's economic power.

American women entered the workforce in unprecedented numbers during World War II, as widespread male enlistment left gaping holes in the industrial labor force. Between 1940 and 1945, the female percentage of the U.S. workforce increased from 27 percent to nearly 37 percent, and by 1945 nearly one out of every four married women worked outside the home. “Rosie the Riveter,” star of a government campaign aimed at recruiting female workers for the munitions industry, became perhaps the most iconic image of working women during the war.

While women worked in a variety of positions previously closed to them during World War II, the aviation industry saw the greatest increase in female workers. More than 310,000 women worked in the U.S. aircraft industry in 1943, making up 65 percent of the industry’s total workforce (compared to just 1 percent in the pre-war years). The munitions industry also heavily recruited women workers, as illustrated by the U.S. government’s “Rosie the Riveter” propaganda campaign. Based in small part on a real-life munitions worker, but primarily a fictitious character, the strong, bandanna-clad Rosie became one of the most successful recruitment tools in American history, and the most iconic image of working women in the World War II era.

MICHIGAN Gary Glenn, State Chair Veteran’s Day Gary Glenn, Michigan State chair, and newly-elected member of the Michigan House of Representatives, represented SDPHS at the Veteran’s Day ceremony at the Midland Veterans Memorial. He gave thanks and a tribute to the "terrible sacrifices" of America's veterans and said that "the burden and duty now falls to us to live our lives in such a way as to be worthy of those who gave their all to protect our freedom."

Glenn, who enlisted during the Gulf War buildup and served eight years in the U.S. Army Reserve and National Guard, laid a wreath at the memorial representing SDPHS. His father, the late SSG James R. "Jimmy" Glenn, U.S. Marine Corps, was a World War II veteran stationed at Marine Gary Glenn, Michigan State Chair Barracks who survived the Japanese attack.

THEY REMEMBER... WE WON’T FORGET submitted by his daughter William G. Legg, S 1/C Kaneohe Naval Air Station, Hawaii Jacqueline Kendzioreck

07:30 - I jump into my swim trunks, grab my laundry and head down the block long pier with full intention of doing my laundry before my comrades awakened after their “night on the town”. I reached the end of the pier, glanced to my left at the three PBY seaplanes, and began to wash my navy whites first. At this time I heard what I thought was a squadron of our planes approaching over my right shoulder... 07:55 - 08:45 I was scrubbing away when I heard and saw water splashing around the PBY seaplanes anchored to my left in the water. Almost instanta- neously I heard the thunderous bombs dropping on the PBY’s. As I saw them destroyed before my eyes, I was aware that one of the Japanese planes had circled and was coming at me. The pilot grinned, and as I ran from the end of the pier heading for cover, the strafing bullets followed me, hitting everything but me. Just as I was within a few yards of the plane ramp and hangars, bombs began falling on the planes and hangars. One of the bombs landed close enough to me to pick me up, and throw me 7 feet into the air. I landed on my back... When I regained consciousness, the Japanese planes had circled around and I saw clearly the symbol of the “Rising Sun” on the under wing, and I knew that we had been sneaked up on... We were at war with Japan. I laid motionless, hoping they would think I was dead, but the pilot, who seemed to be stalking me, strafed me with bullets... I don’t know if one of the bullets hit my arm, it hurt so badly I couldn’t tell. My arm was bleeding profusely. As the Japanese planes left to circle around again, I got to my feet, ran to my barracks, jumped into some jeans and then made a dash for the sick bay where the shrapnel was removed from my arm and stitches put in to hold my arm together. When this process was completed, I ran back toward the hangar area where it appeared help was needed. About the time I arrived my commanding officer called to me, “Hey, Legg, man the machine gun, the bastards just killed the last man operating it.” I ran to the machine gun nested behind some cinder blocks. Low and behold here came the Japs again. The same pilot had spotted me.. Back then my hair was a sandy red but in the sunlight it must have looked like I was his special target. I was 20 years old, weighing 130 pounds, and when I saw that grinning Japanese pilot coming right at me I knew it was either him or me. I rose to my feet, machine gun 70 pounds heavy, I began to shoot at the advancing plane.. The Japanese pilot grinning from ear to ear, beading in on me as I stood in the warm blood of my fallen comrade. I became furious enough that it gave me the super strength I needed to point that machine gun dead center on the pilot. I fired as fast and furiously as I could and saw his face was not more than 40 to 50 feet from me, I continued to fire and I saw his head hit the instrument panel of his plane, and I stood and watched as he crashed into Kansas Hill. After that, no more planes, bombs or strafing. I didn’t understand why it stopped so abruptly until two years ago when my wife and I went to Honolulu, and I traced the events of December 7, 1941. When we “re-ran” the events of that day, the last stop we made was to the memorial the Japanese erected on that now Marine base to the pilot shot down, the only one on the then Kaneohe NAS. The Pilot, Lt. Iida was the “Commander, Third Air Control Group.” I cannot believe nor do I understand why the US government could possibly allow such a thing to be erected on a US military installation. My prayer is that December 7 and the fours years that followed would make a better place and a safer country for my children, grandchildren and future generations to live without fear of a sneak attack or any act of war on our soil. God bless us all and God help us. William Legg dictated this to his wife, Iris, on December 7, 1991, fifty years after the attack. He died of cancer on April 20, 2001 before the attack on the Twin Towers in New York City.
