THE 1982 EUROPEAN 2000 CHAMPION

PRESS RELEASE

Ayrton Senna Da Silva, the talented Brazilian, finished off a strenuous three race programme in Europe at the Jyllandsringen circuit in Denmark on August 22nd, with his third win in as many weeks. The eighth round of the Euroseries Formula Ford 2000 Championship was won again in Ayrton's usual convincing style. He led into the first corner from and drove a steady race, breaking the lap record on the way to his Fifth Euroseries win of the season. The twenty-two points gained in Denmark means he has now clinched the Euroseries FF2000 Championship with still one round to go at Mondello Park in Ireland. He now has a total of 110 points to Calvin Fish's 75 points. The pressure was on Ayrton and the Rushan Green Racing Team as soon as they arrived at the small 1475 m circuit near Silkeborg, Denmark. The team, conaxsting of Team Manager Dennis Rushen and Chief Mechanic Petter Baul, had already spent two long weeks in Europe at Hockenheim, Germany and Osterreichring, Austria. Both races were supporting Grand Prixs and both races had been won with a great deal of ease. At Hockenheim, Ayrton had been a sensational three seconds quicker than anyone else in practice, and at Osterreichring, he won the race by 14 seconds from his nearest rival, Calvin Fish. Dennis Rushen wanted the Championship clinched at Denmark and that's exactly what happened. As soon as the cars were out during the wet, untimed, practice on Friday morning, Ayrton was setting the pace. In both timed sessions on Saturday he was by far the quickest and, considering he had never driven the circuit before, hie times were an embarrelament to many of the Danish drivers. The race was a formality. He led into the first corner, pulled out a three second lead and completed the 25 laps four seconds ahead of Fish. His only problem had been the back markers which he had been lapping at two or three a lap. The only other driver in contention for the Championship, Calvin Fish, could only manage sixth fastest in practice. A. good start put him second by lap three, but there was nothing he could do to catch the Flying Brazilian. Ayrton, looking emotionally happy after the race, said "I had to be careful of the backmarkers, I was so afraid of them not seeing me. I drove very carefully each time I passed them, which was every lap, but Calvin had the same problem. The Championship means so much to me, because it will create a lot of publicity for me in Brazil, so I can gain the necessary sponsorship to compete in in England next season".
