World Première Performances

In December 2011, four new , including two operas for children, will be staged for the first time, in Amsterdam, Dresden, Wroclaw and Malmö. Manfred Trojahn follows in the footsteps of Christoph Willibald Gluck, and Vittorio Gnecchi, among others. For his fifth opera, Zygmunt Krauze adapts a 1982 play inspired by Franz Kafka’s life.

Karlsson is a short mischievous man with a propeller on his back allowing him to fly. He gets his neighbors in trouble, but in the end, everyone appreciate his sense of humour, energy and good nature.

Tan Dun : The First Emperor , EMI Classics, 50999 2 15129 9 5 with Plácido Domingo, Michelle DeYoung, Wu Hsing-Kuo, Elizabeth Futral. Centers on the first emperor of China, brutal rule known for unifying the country and building the Great Wall. Tan Dun conducts and Zhang Yimou directs. Recorded at the Met in January 2007, shortly after the world première.

Based on Charles Dickens, the opera tells the tale of Tiny Tim Cratchit in Civil War America. Recorded in New York in December 2010. Conducted by John Nardolillo. Thomas Pasatieri : The Hotel Casablanca , Albany, Troy 1005 with Darla Diltz, Brandy Lynn Hawkins, David Baker, Natalie Krupansky, Eric Brown. First performed in on August 3, 2007. Based on the Feydeau farce A Flea in her Ear , it is set on a wealthy ranch in Texas, 1948. Recorded in Lexington in October 2007. Conducted by John Nardolillo.

Aribert Reimann : Melusine , Wergo, WER 6719 2 with Marlene Mild, Teresa Erbe, Gabriele May, Richard Kindley, Song-Hu Liu First performed in Schwetzingen on April 29, 1971. Based on a 1920s play by Ivan Goll, the libretto gives a modern twist to the fable of the half-fish, half-human mermaid. Recorded live in Nürnberg on May 12, 2007. Conducted by Peter Hirsch. Christopher Theofanidis : The Refuge , Albany, Troy 1024/25 with Albina Shagimuratova, Rebekah Camm, Beau Gibson, Liam Bonner First performed in Houston on November 10, 2007. Based on the immigrants’ own words, it tells the journey stories of immigrants to Houston. Live recording of the first performance. Conducted by Patrick Summers. Scott Wheeler : The Construction of Boston , Naxos, 8.669018 with William Hite, Charles Blandy, Marcus DeLoach, Krista River, Elizabeth Anker. First performed in Boston in January 1989. It demonstrates the city’s racial and ethnic mixture. Recorded live in Boston on April 1, 2007. Conducted by Donald Teeters.

In progress Shakespearean Opera Performance Guide This book will include all operas listed in previous studies as well as new operas composed in the last 20 years. It will give all information needed to perform it : characters with tessituras (and complete cast for the world première performance), complete orchestral setting, sets as described in libretto, duration, recordings, publishers. It is to be published before the Shakespeare anniversaries in 2014 (450th of his birth) and 2016 (400th of his death).

COWARC holds a collection of more than 6,100 documents published by opera companies since 1989 with information about more than 132,000 performances. A great amount of information has also been gathered on Shakespearean operas from all times and all countries.
