Pode atingir até 32 cm. Difere dos peixes-rei (Atherina spp.) pela presença de barbatana adiposa. Distribuição geográfica Atlântico Oriental: norte da Noruega para o Saara Ocidental, incluindo o sul da Islândia, Ilhas Faroe e Mediterrâneo. 1 Habitat e ecologia Comum na plataforma continental a profundidades que podem ir até aos 700m.
