He inherited the spirit; his environment gave the motive; he achieved the career by virtue of his physical endowment, his high courage, and his mental and moral fitness. His interest in geology was• first aroused by his mother, an unusually gifted woman, and was fixed by early incidental opportunities for ob- servations in'Germany and Corsica, followed by a chance meeting with the German geologist, Noeggeratli, which led to his going to the mining school at Freiberg. He used his profession of mining engineer, but never devoted himself to it. He served his adopted science, geology, but not exclusively; yet his contributions to its principles and knowledge remain unchallenged after thirty to fifty years of later intensive research along the same lines. He cherished for forty years a dream of carrying out investigations in the archeology and ethnology of the Asiatic and European races and at the age of three score and ten realized it with that same thoroughness and devotion to truth which characterized all of his scientific studies. -

Box 6666 New Haven, Connecticut 06511 ABSTRACT Commencing with the appointment of Benjamin Silliman as Professor of Chemistry and Natural History in 1802, the history of instruction and research in the geological sciences at Yale can be conveniently divided into seven generation-long stages. Each stage was characterized by a group of faculty members whose interests and personalities imparted a distinct flavor and character to the institution; as those faculty members left, retired, or died over a decade-long period of change, responsibility for geological studies passed to a new generation. The first stage began with the appointment of Silliman; the second started in 1850 as Silliman's career drew to a close and J. D. Dana, his son-in-law, was appointed to the faculty, and brought the first Ph.D. degrees in the United States. The third stage com• menced in 1880, and the fourth beginning in 1900, brought the first faculty appointments specifically for graduate instruction. The fifth and sixth stages saw the formative moves that welded different administrative units together, leading to today's Department of Geology and Geophysics. Stage seven, commencing in 1965, includes the present (1984), but holds the seeds of stage eight. The increasing diversity of research activities in geology has led to a doubling of the number of geological faculty employed at Yale approximately every 50 years. -

Memorial of Waldemar Lindgren
MEMORIAL OF WALDEMAR LINDGREN M. J. Bunncnn, MassochuseltsInstitute of Technology,Cambri'd'ge, Mass. On November 3, Dr. Waldemar Lindgren succumbedto an illness which had made him an invalid for about a year. His death will be re- gretted not only by mineralogists but by all workers in the several fields of geological knowledge. Lindgren's breadth of geological attainment was equalled by few men. He not only appreciated the many facets of the science of geology, but he contributed to their advancement, and his publications ranged in subject matter from physiography to crystallog- raphy. Waldemar Lindgren was born February 14, 1860,at Kalmar, Sweden, the son of Johan and Emma Lindgren. At a very early age he evinced an interest in mineralogy and geology, and particularly in mineral de- posits. fndeed when only fourteen, he started his mineralogical excur- sions and visited the mining regions of central Sweden, and in the im- mediately following years, visited the mines of Norway and Germany. When he graduated from the Kalmar Gymnasium in 1878,Lindgren entered the famous Royal Mining Academy at Freiberg, Saxony, where he studied under Richter, Winkler, Weisbach, and Stelzner. Lindgren took his opportunitiesseriously; he told me that he often took his min- eralogy and petrography text books to bed with him, and read from them till he fell asleep.He graduated with the degree of Mining Engi- neer in 1882,but stayed for an additional year of graduate work. fn 1883, Lindgren quit Europe for the geological opportunities of America, and was fortunate enoughto receivean appointment as assist- ant to ProfessorW. -
