Benedict (1972: 124) discussed this for TB, but argued that MORPHOSYNT AX m Chinese no conslstent pattern of morphological alternation could be recognized. Most scbolars now would see the Chinese forms as parallel to the TB forms, and part of a cognate Randy J. LaPolla pbenomenon. Pulleyblank (1973a, 2000) argues these variant forms should be the result of an intransitivizing prefix *a- (a non-syllabic pharyngeal glide) which voiced the initial of the original transitive roots. Mei (1989) includes this prefix in a paradigm with the *s- directive preflX an~ the *-s direction of action changing suffix (below).3 Both Pulleyblank and Mei base the l~ea for the prefix mainly on the Written Tibetan a-chung ('small a') prefix (here 1 SINO-TmETAN marked Wlth. an apostrophe). Chantel Vanderveen Trinity Western University ABSTRACT This thesis is a description of the phonology of Stau, a Rgyalrongic language of the Tibeto-Burman family, based on original field research. Stau is spoken by approximately 23,000 people in the west of Sichuan province, China. It is an almost unstudied language. Apart from a sketch of the phonology and grammar by Huang (1991), which provides a pho- netic (rather than phonemic) analysis of Stau sounds, lists attested onsets and rhymes, and discusses tone, there has been virtually no systematic study of the phonology of language. This thesis provides a more extensive study of Stau phonology, covering segmental phonol- ogy, acoustic analysis of stops and of vowels, syllable structure, phonotactics, phonological processes, and pitch phenomena. Of particular interest in this phonology are Stau’s large phonemic inventory of forty- two consonants and eight vowels, its large syllable canon which allows onset clusters of up to three consonants and single coda consonants, phonotactic constraints among its conso- nant clusters, and vowel changes in reduplication. The primary reason for this — and, indeed, for using the web journal as opposed to the printed paper format — is to make the information contained in the journal accessible to scholars in developing countries, in particular the countries of the Himalayan region. Web access is steadily increasing in these areas, and this technology allows fast and affordable access to current research. It is our hope that scholars from the Himalayan region will not only be able to access Himalayan Linguistics, but will also be active contributors to it. Willis Oko As the discipline of language documentation and description evolves, so do the ex- pectations placed on researchers. Current trends emphasize collaborative efforts that prioritize tangible contributions to the community, such as a pedagogical grammar, dictionary, or collection of texts. Some argue that for unwritten lan- guages orthography development is imperative so that materials prepared by the researcher (perhaps in collaboration with the community) are accessible to speak- ers. In light of the current discussions of methodology and ethical issues related to endeavors to document and describe the world’s languages, this paper explores the challenges faced by a single researcher (the author) working on a single lan- guage (Darma) within a multilingual setting (in India). This project emphasizes ethnographic and discourse-centered research methodologies which reveal lan- guage ideologies that are discussed here to demonstrate that while orthography development is a reasonable objective in many cases, one must be sensitive to a variety of interconnecting issues including history, social relationships, language ideology, and local politics associated with writing and education. While orthog- raphy development has not been a viable option in the Darma Documentation and Description Project, it is nevertheless a matter that needs to be addressed for the benefit of the community as well as ongoing discussions of methodology and best practices in linguistic and anthropological research. 1. Introduction1 Globally, the number of languages that are strictly oral – without a codified writing system – is estimated to be greater than the number of languages with an orthography by about two to one (Austin 2008:7; Crystal 2000:140, fn 28).

Himalayan Linguistics a Geolinguistic Study of Directional Prefixes in The
Himalayan Linguistics A geolinguistic study of directional prefixes in the Qiangic language area Satoko Shirai Tokyo University of Foreign Studies ABSTRACT This study examines directional prefixes of the languages spoken in the Qiangic language area from a geolinguistic perspective. Among these languages, the northern languages tend to have more directional prefixes. This fact suggests the areal development of directional prefixes. I discuss the following eight directional prefixes: (i) “upward”, (ii) “downward”, (iii) “inward”, (iv) “outward”, (v) “upriver”, (vi) “downriver”, (vii) “eastward” and (viii) “westward”. These directional categories are based on nature such as landforms or space and are relatively common in Qiangic. First, I show the geographical distribution of the forms of prefixes for each directional category. Then, I make hypotheses on the historical development of directional prefixes using a geolinguistic method. I conclude that among these directional categories, (i)– (iv) are basic in the Qiangic language area. In other words, the other categories, (v)–(viii), developed later in each local area. The following are the oldest types of initial of each directional prefix: dental plosive for the “upriver” prefixes; dental nasal for the “downward” prefixes; voiceless velar plosive for the “inward” and “upriver” prefixes; voiced velar plosive for the “outward” and “downriver” prefixes; velar plosive for the “eastward” prefixes; and dental nasal for the “westward” prefixes.
